Check out the following from the SC Dept. of Archives & History for information on counties & districts . They have wonderful maps showing exactly what counties were in which districts, the years they were formed and all the changes they went through. The 1769 maps will have this, but you might also enjoy all the maps from day one. www.state.sc.us/scdah/guide/countymap2.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: "A. Thanks to Dolores Pringle and others for mentioning the book Jocassee Valley, by Claudia Whitmire Hembree. I purchased one and it is a very interesting, great book about that area!! Thanks again, Dolores. Vivian Carroll Parkman Researching: Carroll, Bearden, Jaynes, Jolly.
Thank you also, I'm trying to locate where My gr gr gr grandfather lived in OPD. And where he is burried. Nicholas Briskey/Brisky and his wife Elizabeth Mark/Merck. 1790 retyped census has it spelled wrong as BRISHEY. Being disabled I can't afford to hire anyone but any help is greatfully appreciated. They are a large historical family in Alabama and Washington state. Maryellen, I think you're confusing Old Pinckney District with Old Pendleton. The Pinkney District covered parts or all of modern day Spartanburg, Union, Cherokee and York counties. Laurens, Newberry and Abbeville were part of the Ninety-Six District. The Old Pendleton Dist. consisted only of present-day Pickens, Oconee, and Anderson Counties. There were lots of fluctuations in boundaries, but these three have always made up OPD. Old Pickens Dist. was formed when OPD was split into Anderson Dist. and Picken Dist. during the 1830s approx. Pickens Dist.'s western section became Oconee Co and the eastern became what is now Pickens Co. If there are any other questions, there are many folks on this list who can speak to them, and I am always glad to try to help also. God bless, Dolores Miller Pringle - 8th generation Pickens Co. Margaret & Eldon...Old Pendleton Dist consisted of present day Anderson, Oconee, & Pickens Co's. Derrell Oakley Teat -----Original Message----- From: Eldon Wade [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, February 29, 2004 3:08 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [SC-OPD] Current counties that made up Old Pendleton District. You are welcome Margaret. Unfortunately, none of the counties cited in the 16 incidents (Charleston, Chester, and York) were part of the Old Pendleton District. To my knowledge the Old Pendleton District was comprised of present day Anderson Co, Oconee Co, and Pickens Co. The districts and counties have changed a number of times so maybe parts of Charleston, Chester, or York were part of Old Pendleton at one time. I will cross post this mail to the Old Pendleton List and hopefully someone from that list will contact us if I am incorrect. From the book "S C Waterways As They Appear In Mill's Atlas Including Bridges, Ferries and Fords" Indexed by Mariam D. Cropper Fishing Creek runs into Catawba River, Chester I do not have the book but have ancestors with land in this area. I made copies of several pages several years ago. Hope this helps someone. I believe Old Pickens was comprised of present day Union, Spartanberg, Greenville, Pickens, Oconee, Anderson, Abbeville, Laurens, and Newberry. Neither Chester nor York where ever part of the Old Pendleton District. They are 125 miles or so to the east, just south of Charlotte, NC. While Craven, Berkeley and other pre-Revolutionary War counties stretched from the coast to near the SC/NC line, I doubt that any coastal county ever went as far north as the present day Oconee, Pickens and Anderson counties. Most of that area was in the Cherokee nation until around 1780. York and Chester counties were at one time inhabited by the Catawba Indians. There is still a Catawba Reservation near the York/Lancaster county line. I am familiar with Fishing Creek Church in Chester County as I attended college in Rock Hill and drove through that area from my home in Whitmire (Newberry County) many, many times in the early 1980s. I am not familiar with a Fishing Creek in Old Pendleton, but I certainly feel your frustration. I am currently in search of Flat Rock in Saxe Gotha (present day Lexington County) where one Martin Fry received a land grant in 1749. I'm sure it is known by some other name today as Fishing Creek might be in Old Pendleton District. York and Chester counties were settled in the 1740s-50s by mostly Scotch-Irish immigrants from PA, MD, VA and NC. Randall Frye Laurens, SC
Looking for information on the family of James McElwain/McIlwain, McEwain. One of his daughters married Joshua Smith. They were in the area during the early 1800's. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Pat

Hi there, Let me make one correction because it may be important: 1790 Census: McDaniel Surname the 1790 Census listed the following: 1. # of free white males OVER 16 2. # of free white males UNDER 16 3. # of females of any age 4. # of slaves If this were not the case, then we would have a couple of McDaniel households only occupied by one young boy. Don't think that was the case!! :-) Hope this helps, Melissa --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail SpamGuard - Read only the mail you want.
