    2. Sandel, You can find Rev War Pension extracts at any LDS Library. They have a great big book on it. You can contact the National Archives in Washington, DC re: any Rev War Pension. I went to their location in Southern CA and viewed the film of one of my RW vets file. When I "get rich" I will order it....because it contains all the pay vouchers, there are lots of pages and it will cost $50. There is no charge for just viewing the films...if you are just looking for info, you can take a pad and pencil and take notes. As to the SC Archives: I'll have to look in my files and get an E-address for you. The same for the Charleston Public Library....there are on individual pages that I printed so will take some time to find one....must go and make dinner now. later, Janice

    3. Some of the Rev. War pension files have pay vouchers and pages, but some don't. My ancestor's file is supposed to have 42 pages, but when we ordered it there were three pages, mostly illegible. I can't remember how much it cost (it was under $50, I guess because the file was so small) but it didn't really tell us anything new. I don't want to throw cold water over it or anything, but I'd hate for you to get your hopes up and then get a file like we did. *********** REPLY SEPARATOR *********** On 3/18/04 at 8:16 PM [email protected] wrote: >Sandel, You can find Rev War Pension extracts at any LDS Library. 2. Hello, I'm also researching the same area for my gr gr gr grandfather Nicholas Briskey/Brisky and his wife Susan Elizabeth Merk/Mark. Around 1789. And In my researching I found that many of the families seemed to migrate together around 1830's many for land grants and lottery land. GA and then onto Chambers County,AL areas and surrounding areas. I have a copy of a great book called Heritage of Chambers County,AL by Heritage Publishing which you might get a copy to look at through your local library inner library loan dept. It's usually free. But there are a large number of pages on Daniels. I have found many decendents of families for others through this book. Also a good book to get is 1832 Gold Lottery books GA especially. I'm going to try to get SC. Gives 100's of names mostly alphabetical and lots of info. Also "Reson for the Tears" By Bobby Lindsey has a chuck full book of early settlers. I wish you good luck. 3. The best way to view all the S. C. plats, grants, etc. in your own home it to go into the SCDAH site and click on Record Indexes on line. You will not get copies of the originals, but will find abstracts that include dates, acreage, waterways, all names on documents - anything that is on the document. There are also many other indexes included. If one wishes to order, you can also order online. The site is: www.state.sc.us/scdah ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, March 18, 2004 12:35 PM Subject: Re: [SC-OPD] Land Grant and Land Lotteries > Sandel, I had good success contacting the Charleston Public Library, and also > the state archives in Columbia. 2. Sandel, I had good success contacting the Charleston Public Library, and also the state archives in Columbia. Can't remember which location provided it, but I ordered and received the complete index to Royal Land Grants in the surname I was researching. These are all, as you would expect, prior to the Rev War, but I was able to place my line in locations, and find out how many there were in SC with that surname who received early grants from the English crown. In many cases it also shows who the land was passed on to. Hope this helps, Janice

    3. Sandel, Don't worry about the way Briskey is spelled in the 1790 census. No one can change that. Your Briskeys are in Abbevile and Edgefield Counties of S. C., which area was in the Ninety Six District, not the Old Pendleton District. Remember the abstract of the 1789 John Balthaser Mark will I sent you where his daughter Elizabeth was wife of Nicholas Brisky, will filed in Abbeville Co., SC? You need the records from these two counties, not the OPD records unless some of the children later went to OPD - but the name does not show up in the indexes of Pickens or Anderson Counties of SC. I would write the court houses of these two counties. The deeds of Abbeville burned, but the probate records did not. Edgefield is intact. I have seen your names in the early census from these two counties and forwarded them on to you. I believe your best bet would be to check out Abbeville and Edgefield and I think you will find these to be your people.. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, March 18, 2004 10:23 AM Subject: Re: [SC-OPD] Land Grant and Land Lotteries > Land Grant Books if you can find them. 3. > Could someone straighten me out on Land Grants and Land Lotteries, how did > they work and how were they distributed, or applied for ,etc > The definition of a "Land Grant" and a "Land Lottery" varied from state to state and each Territory and the federal government had its' own definition as well. However, in a general sense, a "Land Grant" was an offer of a designated amount of real property in return for the performance of a act. For example, many of the railroads in the country were built on the promise of the federal government to pay the builder in real property upon completion of the railroad. Thus the government got a railroad built that would help settle an area of the country and the developer would get unimproved land that could have valuable timber or minerals etc. A "Land Lottery" was the giving of some land to the lucky winners of a drawing held by a government entity. The applicant perhaps paid a fee for the privilege of participating in the give away, and the government profited by getting some land development. The Cherokee Land Lotteries in Georgia in the 19th century were an example. Jim Pearson [email protected]
