I first found a reference to this family in a book at the Kershaw Co. Public Library, Camden, SC called South Carolina Genealogies, Vol. 3. This was one of the first efforts to search for my Coursey family, and as you see, I did not get a complete notation on the book. Can do so if you would like. Notes: CENSUS: 1850 Edgefield Co., SC p. 61A, hh# 925 John was listed as a wheel wright with property of $1500. He and family lived next door to Peter Quattlebaum, father to his wife Ann. Later moved to Henderson Co., TX near Eustace. Desc. of John Coursey and Ann Quattlebaum sent to me by Steve Harper. sharper@airmail.net > (972) 932-4472. No further source documentation at this time. This line is NOT my direct line; In fact, I don't know for sure if it connects at all. However, there is a possibility that Jack, based on his date of birth, is a brother to my ggg-grandfather, about whom I have found little and to whom I cannot attach parents or 1st wife. The oldest son, John Henry, remained in Edgefiel Dist, SC in the area that is now McCormick Co. He is found in census data as Cosey and Corsey. I think they all were Courseys of various spelling. Notes for JOHN HENRY: 1860 Edgefield Co. SC Census - John Henry Coursey living with J.B. and Mary W. Williams age 17. Listed at the state archives in the Confederate Card Index as Pvt. John H. Coursey - Co D 14th SC Regulars. http://www.researchonline.net/sccw/ contains information on The South Carolina14th Infantry Regiment. John Cosey served in Co. D known as the Edgefield Riflemen. Roll of Company "D," Fourteenth Regiment Infantry, South Carolina Volunteers, - all from Edgefield: John Cosey, age 20, wounded at Chancellorsville. According to a booklet at the state archives, one John H. Coursey received an artificial limb. I have not followed up on that. 1870 Edgefield Co. Census, p. 120 Grant Township, Edgefield CH hh#105/114 Cosey John H. 25, SC laborer Esther, 21,SC Mamie 1; Nannie 3/12 (Feb) A Thomas Mathis age 50 lives down the road. Could be her father. m Susan A. hh# 115/121 In 1880 John Cosey is found in the 1880 Edgefield Co. census, p. 80 Coliers Township, hh#305/305 John Cosey 35 Laborer SC, SC, SC Hester 33 wife, SC, SC, SC Mary dau 11 SC Nancy dau 8 SC Tommie son 7 SC Kate dau 5 SC unnamed 1 dau SC My gg-grandfather named a son John Henry Coursey - wonder if it was after this John H. who if my speculations are right would have been his uncle. I have not been in touch with Steve in a couple of years, so I do not know if the email address is still valid. Maybe the phone # will help. If you get in touch with him, I would also like to hear from him, so please pass the message on. I am ccing this message to the address I have just in case it works. NOW..... you know everything that I do about this line. Please keep me posted about your findings on Ann E. - by the way, do you have any census records for her that show her state of birth. If she is the same, the Ann E. in my files was born SC, according to the 1850 census, and the area was at the time of her birth still Edgefield Co., SC Do you have absolute proof of her birth in Richmond Co., Ga.. It is just a little south and west of the Savannah River area dividing McCormick Co., SC (formed in 1916 from western Edgefield and south western Abbeville cos). I was born in Richmond Co, Ga. only because that is where the hospital was. I was raised in North Augusta SC, a separate town across the Savannah River from Augusta. I am sure if my children were asked to fill in my death certificate they would put North Augusta, SC down for my place of birth, so maybe that is what happened with Ann?? Get back in touch and lets talk about our Coursey research. Billie Jones Camden, SC tjones@camden.net
