In response to a post by Joanne Harley" <harleyclan@coastalnet.com and to any other who might be of help. I have a puzzle in my Edgefield Co., SC family that may connect to some Charleston Hartleys. Descendants of Stephen Hartley 1 Stephen HARTLEY b: 1709 in Charleston, Charleston, SC d: May 07, 1759 in Charleston, Charleston, SC .. +Elizabeth NEWTON b: Abt. 1711 in Charleston, Charleston, SC m: January 13, 1730/31 in Charleston, Charleston, SC d: October 1759 in Charleston, Charleston, SC .... 2 Rebecca HARTLEY b: 1739 in Charleston, Charleston, SC d: March 1795 ........ +William WITHERS b: September 15, 1734 in Charleston, Charleston, SC m: November 27, 1755 in Charleston, Charleston, SC d: September 15, 1778 in Charleston, Charleston, SC Father: James Withers Mother: Mary Cartwright ........... 3 John WITHERS b: 1756 in Charleston, Charleston, SC d: Abt. 1800 in Charleston, Charleston, SC ........... 3 Richard WITHERS b: 1758 in Charleston, Charleston, SC d: 1786 in Charleston, Charleston, SC **....... 3 [Rebecca Hartley WITHERS] b: Abt. 1760 in Mt. Pleasant, Charleston, SC d: Bef. September 1828 in probably Edgefield Co., SC ............... +William Simeon (Sr.) DEAN b: November 02, 1765 in NC m: Aft. 1786 d: July 14, 1830 in Edgefield Co, SC Burial: Dean Cemetery, Edgefield Co, SC Father: UNKNOWN DEAN ........... 3 Mary Ann WITHERS b: 1764 in Charleston, Charleston, SC ............... +GRAY ........... 3 Nancy WITHERS b: 1771 in Charleston, Charleston, SC The Patriot Index info. on my ancestor William Dean b. 1765 listed Rebecca Hatley Withers as his first wife. That is the ONLY thing I have ever been able to find out about her that shows a connection to William Dean. We find in Edgefield Co. Deeds where William is selling land with another wife, Nancy, by 1790. Rebecca Hartley Withers is a complete mystery to us. I have attached her to this family without proof that they are one and the same, as I found a person by that name in Abstract of Wills of Charleston Dist., SC 1783-1800 compiled and edited by Caroline T. Moore, Will of her brother, Richard Withers Book B - 1786-1794, p. 8 Charleston Dist, SC. LDS records give some info on her, but nothing that proves she is the same person who belongs to my Dean line and to the Withers line. Would you possibly have any information on her? I have some ancestry of this Withers family from LDS Online records at <FamilySearch.org>, but no further verification other than the will. and the following notes: Rebecca Hartley Withers might possible be the following person: In "Charleston Residents 1782-1794" by Carroll Ainsworth McElligott, Heritage Books, 1989, p. 104 I found a Rebecca Withers living at 8 Cumberland Street, Charleston, SC. This list includes residents listed in the city directory for the year 1794. On page 96, there is an Elizabeth Hartley living in 1790 at #9 Market Street. I do not know who this is as Rebecca's mother Elizabeth Newton Hartley's death date is given as 1759 in information downloaded from LDS site. Abstract Wills of Charleston Dist., Sc 1783-1800 compiled and edited by Caroline T. Moore, 1974 lists the following: p. 211 - Mrs. Rebecca Withers mentioned in the will of Mary Tamplet d 26 august 1790. William Withers also mentioned. WITHERS, Rebecca 1790 Census_St. James,Goose Creek Parish 0 males over 16 0 males under 16 1 females 12 slaves Peter Tamplet d 10 April 1793 and gives William Withers as Executor. [Who is this William Withers. Rebecca's husband died in 1778, and I do not have a son named William listed, altho. it seems probably there would be one. Withers file R595 Roll $39, Andrea Collection, University of SC Caroliniana Library , p. 6 sites SC Historical Magazine, Vol 23-39 and date of her death as 23 -24 March 1795. Need to look this up. SC Historical Magazine, Vol 23. 1922 ( bound volumns located at the Camden Archives and Museum, Camden, SC) p. 29 - Marriage and Death Notices form the City Gazette Compiled by Mabel L. Webber- "Died, on the 15th Instant at her plantation on Goose-Creek, in her 56th yers, Mrs. Rebecca Withers, relict of William Withers, esq. Deceased [she states there is a long obituary notice in the next issue. I think this issue is March 21 or 24, 1795 from dates before and after this notice. I never found the notice, so I do not think it was included in the book.] NOTES on WILLIAM WITHERS: An additional source for William was given as Stanley Benjamin Green, Cedar Creek Center, Box 102, Kemp, TX 75143 [AF93-106789] Camden Archives - "SC Quitrents - 1772, 1773-1774" : Berkley Co, SC -- Richard Withers 500 acres sold to Richard Withers since payment by a Jonah Collins Berkley Co, SC -- William Withers listed with acreage 700, 6 yr; 1558, 22 yr; and 719, 5 yr. Neither was listed in 1773-1774 section. "Abstract Wills of Charleston Dist., SC 1783-1800" compiled and edited by Caroline T. Moore, 1974 lists the following: p. 211 - Mrs. Rebecca Withers mentioned in the will of Mary Tamplet d 26 august 1790. William Withers also mentioned. Peter Tamplet d 10 April 1793 and gives William Withers as Executor. "South Carolina Immigrants 1760-1770" Abstracted by Jack Moreland Jones and Mary Bondurant Warren, 1988 c by Mary B. Warren, Heritage Papers, Danielsville, Ga. 30633: p.81 gives the following information about a William Withers: p. 81 - Council Journal, June 5, 1761, William Withers recieves a Kings Bounty of 200a. p. 118- Council Journal, June 21, 1765 p. 550 William Withers receives 200 a in Granville Co. At the beginning of the book there is a description of a Kings bounty -"this was offered to civil officials and military personnel who were assigned to the colonies by the monarch and later discharged. The individuals who chose to stay in America might claim the Kings Bounty, and according to their land military rank or civil importance, the rec'd thier land at the King's (not the colony's) expense...Records of their former service should be available from the Public Record Office at London." I have a few more items in the notes of some of the folks if anyone finds a connection. I would appreciate any help on this Rebecca Withers.
