I love reading from this group. I keep hoping someone will post something that will lead to my grandparents family. my grandparents seem to have left without a trace. They were born in Sumter SC and moved to GA at a young age. He was Luke Davis. The Davis name is so common we can't find anything about him. My grandmother was Sarah or Sara Avant. he was cherokee. she was called a mulatto. she had three sisters Betty who died in childbirth. Laura, moved to Detroit. and Florence who died in GA. We just found an old letter that said Sarah Suine. so we are doing nothing but hitting brick walls. my Grandfather's brothers were. Porter, Utar and King Davis. if any of these names are in anyones family tree please let me know.............Lyzz Davis

Hello, Are you saying the first name given for your grandmother was AVANT? I know the migration of this family, have some of their records. It was uses variously, AVENT/AVANT, but in Southside VA it is mostly AVENT. The given names of the DAVIS men are not at all familiar to me, but it is possible Luke fits with the DAVIS family that lived in the same locale as the AVENT families. If "mulatto" are you interested in checking an African American site? I send records to Toni Heard all the time because of slaves mentioned on wills, etc. The site hasn't been around very long, but Toni tells me they are collecting more and more records all the time. If you can tell me more about the family in the Carolinas, I will see what I can do. Do not do much work in GA.
