Can someone on this list tell me where Granville SC was located? Thank you very much. Becky
Hi Becky, The USGS site says Granville is another name for Beauford, the county seat of Beauford County, SC. Just for everyone's information, that's Beaufort, the county seat of Beaufort County, SC. And, if my memory serves me well (it does go on vacation once in a while) I recall seeing a map (late 1600s into the 1700s) with the Granville District shown as beginning along the coast of SC, with its western boundary being along the Savannah River, and extending well into the area that became NC - and I believe small portions of both GA and TN. Just wish I could tell you where I saw this on the 'net'. Hello Arrie, what map change site are you talking about? thanks escrum@lynchburg.net >
Sorry, I think my cat just sent you half of my reply. This internet site showed how state lines, and (within states) how county lines changed over time. (I'll contact you later about your other e-mail to me. Have company and am on the run.) According to the 1987 SC Legislative Manual Granville County, created during the Proprietory Period, extended from the Combahee River to the Savannah River. Other counties created during this period were: Colleton County (From the Stono River to the Combahee River), Berkeley County (From the Awendaw Creek [called Seewee Creek at that time] to the Stono River), & Craven County ( extended from Awendaw Creek with no northern boundary). All counties were abolished by the Royal Period. Folks, for just about anything you want to know about early districts, counties as they were formed, etc go to USGENWEB.com Pick out a state that you are interested in (I like to use the map rather than the list), then there is a box in the SC page that says early districts. It is a color map and discriptions of the formation, etc of the districts. Then you can chose the individual counties and each of those has different info. depending on what has been donated. I am researching in Edgefield Co, SC and parts of the early Edgefield Dist was in Granville Co. Someone at a SC ARchives meeting program said that even after counties were formed, that many of the deeds along the area where the lines were drawn, were still referred to by their Early Granville, Colleton, etc Counties because noone really knew where the line was out in the back country. Colleton Co. of old not to be confused with Colleton co. of today. Not only did names change, but locations having that name also changed. Check out the maps. I think you will find them helpful.
