I have looked for this before (without success) and would like to make another shot at it. Does anyone know if there are marriage records (express or implied) for the 1778-1787 period? I am looking for a marriage for an Edward WADE and Nancy Ann (surname unknown, maybe BURFORD). I suspect this marriage was in the old Ninety-Six District but Edward appears on the 1790 Pendleton Dist census and owned land in what is now Anderson Co. Thank you. What happened to his land. If he sold this land at any time it would be that his wife would have to sign away dower rights with him. That would stand as your proof of marriage. Or he may have listed her in his will which would stand to prove that union. There is not much in SC in way of marraige records as they were not required back then. Or you may have to find her listed in so and so's will as that persons then married daughter. All of these work I hope this helps you out some in where to look next at least. Hello Gail, Thank you for responding. His wife Nancy Ann did sign her dower rights when they sold some land in 1804 but the deed does not give her maiden name but rather her married name. Her maiden name is what I would like to find. Edward died in DeKalb Co GA in the 1830s and the DeKalb Co courthouse burned in 1842 and destroyed all the pre-1840 records.
