Source: Scrapbook of pictures and obits kept by Ella Ruth Hazel Trotter (1905-1963), d/o John Henry & Jamesanna Timmerman Hazel, (Copy provided by Betty Trotter, May 2004). The following obit was on the same page in the scrapbook as the Bethelehem News that is placed in a separate post. It is the obit of the father of the Elizabeth Shaw who wrote the article for the paper. It may have been from a different edition of the paper. The cem. date for the death of Joe L. Shaw gives the date Jan 17, 1957. On the afternoon of Jan. 17, as the evening sun was setting at 5:30, Mr. Joe L. Shaw passed to his eternal reward following a 4 mo. illness. There were many hearts saddened over his goig for he was greatly beloved by all who knew him. He was patient, kind, and gentle. He was born Dec. 2, 1882, the son of the late Steve and Lizzie Riley Shaw. he was 74 years of age. He had lived in Saluda Co. all his life and in the Bethlehem section all of his married life except or 10 years in the Good Hope Section. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lydia Kemp Shaw and 2 daughters, Miss Elizabeth Shaw and Mrs. Lester Allen, and one grandson, Joe Lester (Allen) all of Johnston. Also surviving are 2 brothers, Frank and June Shaw and three sisters, Mrs. Smith Rushton, Mrs. Holly Hipp, and Mrs. Mott Yarborough, all of Saluda. He was a faithful member of Bethlehem Methodist Church, having served once for 25 years on the board of stewards. he loved all of his pastors. He was engaged in farming all of his life. He was a man who loved his work. Mr. Shaw stood for everything which was high and holy and for the betterment of the community. Everyone respected him as a citizen of the highest merit. he will be freatly missed in many ways. He loved hom and was always devoted to his family. He was also interested in State and National affairs..... The service was hel at Bethlehem Church Friday afternoon, Jam 18 at 3 o"clock by his pastor J. F. Williamson, assisted by Rev. Tommy Gibbons of Nichols, a former pastor, and Rev. J. G. Hipp of Holly Hill, a nephew...... Interment was in Bethlehem Church Cem... Active pallbearers were his nephews Preston Rushton, Shaw Rushton, John Andres Shaw, Robert Shaw, Manning Shaw and Willie Shaw. ----------------------------------- I worked on cem. records to see if I could identify any of the above folks and get dates for the family outline. These are the ones I found: Bethlehem Methodist Church cem, Saluda Co, records show the following: Shaw, Joe L. Dec 2 1882 Jan 17 1957 [HC calls him Joseph Littleton] Shaw, Lydia KEMP Jan 15 1883 Apr 3 1967 Shaw, Sarah Elizabeth Aug 31 1910 Also his sister Kate: [additions by HC Ouzts] Rushton, [Mark] M. Hickory Grove Advent Church cem. records [brackets are comments of HC Ouzts] Shaw, Junius William [June] Feb 21 1890 - Apr 15 1966 [s/o Elizabeth (Lizzie) RILEY & Stephen Franklin Shaw] [m. Sophia COLEMAN] I have been working on connecting the above info. to the Hazel and Trotter lines about whom the scrapbook is focused. It seems that Matilda Louisa Edwards who married John Bland Hazel, of the Hazel family of this Bethlehem Community area (April 06, 1858-July 06, 1936) names a sister Julia Shaw of Saluda. And this seems to be the Julia Edwards Shaw who is buried at Travis Park Cem. per cem. Records: Shaw, Julia [M.] EDWARDS Feb 28 1863 Feb 4 1951 Edwards, [Benjamin Joseph] B. J. Nov 1 1850 Nov 6 1910 Edwards, John Crowder May 28 1854 Oct 24 1904 Edwards, William Suddath May 31 1884 Oct 30 1902 Edwards, Joe Ben Oct 1909 Jan 5 1913 Looks like this may be the connection to the Hazels, thru the Edwards family. HC Ouzts states that Julia Edwards is the 2nd wife of Joseph L. Shaw. And the dates match those of the Benjamin Edwards family who seems to be the father of both Matilda Edwards Hazel and Julia Edwards Shaw. After searching the census records, I can identify find the two sisters and also the brother Benjamin Joseph who is buried next to Julia above. using all the various census records we can get the names. Anyway, there does not seem to be blood kin here with the Hazels, and after I entered the folks into my computer one Steven Franklin Shaw is the son-in-law of Benjamin Edwards & wife Julia A. who is the father of Matilda Edwards who married John Bland Hazel. So Is Steve Shaw who married Lizzie Riley in the obit of Joe L. Shaw, the Same as the Stephen Franklin Shaw who married 2nd Julia Edwards??? I am assuming so.... but will welcome any correction to this assumption. So from the obit, the dates and info. from cemetery and census records, and the assumption that this is the Same Steve Shaw listed as husband of Julia Edwards in the obit of Mrs. John Bland (Matilda Edwards) Hazel in 1936, I have created the following outline of the family: Descendants of Stephen Franklin Shaw 1 Stephen Franklin SHAW b: December 17, 1851 d: January 17, 1920 Burial: Butler Methodist Cem, Saluda Co, SC . +Elizabeth S. Now.... are you as confused as I am? It took me two days to work this out trying to find the relationship... and I have NO connections to this family that I know of. If someone has info. on the Shaw folks I have not identified, please share to the lists. I really hope someone is working on this family, and this helps. But.... it was fun anyway.
