I have a Moses Cockerham who moved to Surry CO NC by 1771, I believe his father was John Cockerham and this line can be traced back to Surry CO VA. Moses was living in Lunenburg CO VA prior to the move to Surry CO NC. I have also a William Cockerham/Cockrum who moved to Buncombe CO NC by 1812 with my Stewart family. My Stewarts were neighbors to the CockerhamŽs in Surry CO NC since at least 1774. Abt. 1795 Edward and Nathaniel Stewart moved to Greenville CO SC, they are listed near some CockerhamŽs. By 1812 they are in Buncombe CO NC. William Cockerham married Betsy Stewart/Stuart and lived in the Buncombe, Macon CO NC area. Gail, yes this is a line I follow. Moses son of old John came to Surry CO NC by 1771, some say his nephew David, son of his deceased brother John JR came with him. I have the 1771, 1772 tax list of Surry CO. Moses Cockerham is the first there. I believe some of this Cockerham line moved to Rutherford CO NC, GA and LA. Wilkes CO NC was created from part of Surry abt 1778, in the next 10 to 12 years part of Wilkes went back to Surry and vice versa. Also, be aware there was a fairly large Cockerham line in Henry, Franklin CO VA. Names included, Abner, Nathaniel, Edward, Cheadle Cockerham. Henry Co VA bordered at one time 1777-1791 on the NC line with Surry CO NC, although this Cockerham line seems to be in present Franklin CO VA and Patrick CO VA.
