    3. Delores: My super-super 40 year old, 80 lb Webster's defines "next friend": "...in law, a person who, though not legally a guardian acts for another unable to act for himself." 3. No wonder John GRISHAM was "next friend", he married the widow after the death of husband. Maybe GRISHAM helped take care of Thomas. 3. Thank you, Charlie. That may just be the definition I needed. God bless, Dolores M. 3. Delores, The legal concept of "next friend" generally denotes "role" or "capacity" in which an adult, usually a parent, acts for or on behalf of one or more minor children to assert legal rights of a minor which rights the minor does not have legal capacity to assert for himself. Common usage involves personal injury where a parent files suit to recover damages for the parent individually "and as next friend" for the minor. And if Charlie ever replaces that 40 year old dictionary, he will most likely find the same definition in his new book, which is probably why that old dictionary will serve him well for a long time to come. Next friend has nothing to do with next husband. I'm not clear on the concept of "next friend" in wills and estates of days gone by. A minor involved in an estate proceeding would normally need a guardian appointed by the court to protect their rights rather than someone waiting to take advantage of a bereaved widow. I can see a serious conflict of interest in that situation. A much closer review of the transactions involved might be necessary here to know what really happened.
