Just a comment. I don't like the fact that ancestry.com does try to lure you in, but I have to say I really have used their census information. Also, I did have some trouble with connecting, but after writing them, they added additional months to my subscription to make up for the trouble. So what I am saying, is to never avoid something like the plague. It may give you a lead and if you close your mind on it, that door will never open. As to the lady who sent in the link, I appreciate any help and thank you for submitting it to us. However, you need to be more careful in the future for those who are offended and let people know that ancestry advertises on your link. That way a choice can be made to visit or not. Hi Hope, You are right. There are more people who LIKE Ancestry than there are who DON'T like it. Many of the people who don't like it may not realize that it costs tons of money to maintain the servers that THESE email lists are hosted on. Many of the USGENWEB pages are freely hosted on Ancestry servers. The USGENWEB archive project is 100% hosted on Ancestry-owned servers. All of the "freepages.rootsweb.com" sites are FREELY hosted on Ancestry-owned servers. Many of those who don't like Ancestry really don't fathom just how much data is available with their subscription service. I for one could not imagine being a serious researcher without an Ancestry subscription. I wonder how many of us have sent a $10 fee to get some info from a genealogical society or other service only to be told that "nothing could be found". No refund...a lookup was performed and paid for. The fee for Ancestry is well worth it because I can do as many lookups through tons of databases as I want. Yes, they have their technical glitches once in awhile but they get fixed in reasonable time. I can deal with that. Just my opinion. Bill oldgoat@mindspring.com writes: > Just a comment. Hi Hope I appreciate your comments (I'm the person who sent the link to my webpages) and agree with you. However, I feel compelled to point out that I have over 500 FREE databases on The Olive Tree Genealogy, and these are freely available to all researchers to use. There's no tricks, no gimmicks - my site is a large one, over 2000 pages, and I think if people take the time to look around they'll soon realize its worth. My goal with Olive Tree Genealogy, which has been on the 'net since 1996, is to help others find their ancestors. That's why I spend my time gather databases to put online for everyone. As well as my own databases, I have what might be called directories. These are links to other sites that I consider of value to researchers. I try to label them all as offsite links, whether the databases are free to search or not (most are free) I also have some links to Ancestry.com - and they are labelled either as Ancestry.com, or pay-to-view, or offsite links. There's no trick, in fact I take pains to tell visitors that they don't have to subscribe, they can get the info for free with the free trials. The fact that some of my links to other sites are not of interest to everyone, should not detract from the main value of my databases that I offer. I think people should visit my site, use the free databases I have, and decide for themselves if they want to use my links to other sites. I was (am still am) really taken aback by the comments of a few of the subscribers on this list, because I feel they did not look at my site and see what I offer. I'm still bewildered by the comments just because I have a link to some FREE trials on Ancestry.com, and some links to some of their databases I think are worthwhile. Does everyone know that Ancestry.com owns Rootsweb which hosts this list (and all Rootsweb lists). That Ancestry.com hosts the USGenWeb sites? And Cyndis list? I think it's worth noting... All I can say is to repeat that my site has over 500 free databases and everyone is welcome to go and check it out. I'm not trying to trick anyone and I'm surprised that anyone would think I am. I'm sorry if subscribers on this list were offended by my post to the list - I thought I'd let those searching S. Carolina know about my new search engine for ships lists (it's the yellow one in the box) and I had no idea that kind of announcement wasn't welcome. I've been on the 'net for so many years that I guess I figured most genealogy circles have heard of me and know my site and what it stands for. I guess I've learned that Olive Tree isn't as well known as I thought ! :-) Anyway for anyone who's interested, check out my site before you criticize it, okay? Hi to all, Just getting in on the tail end of this. I began researching on the computer in 1998. Olive Tree Genealogy was well known then. I am getting my list mail sporadically, so I don't know the original question. I just know it is a well-known, highly reputable site. I guess it just amazes me that it would be questioned. Lorine, Hello - I enjoyed your site and did find several of the databases you mentioned. My question is, although I could find many ship' lists for the 1800's, I wondered if you have any for ships that arrived in South Carolina in the mid 1700's? My Schofields arrived on a ship with Rev William Turberville prior to 1752. I think your site looks so professional that it is easy to think it is a commercial site. Thanks for your hard work on the site.
