If you are trying to locate your ancestors in South Carolina but have NO clues other than a "born in SC" on the census records of other states (GA, AL, LA, FL, TX etc), here's something you can try: Look at the census record again and note which families are living nearby. Are any of the family members born in SC? If so, look for their names in everything you can in the last known location for your ancestor (in Gail's case, GA): --tax and voter lists (who voted at the same place as your ancestor?) --deeds (who bought land near your ancestor; are there any deeds in their name showing sale of land in SC? If so, where was their land?) --cemeteries (are there other folks on the 1850, born in SC, buried in the same cemetery as your ancestor?) Which surnames seem to always be in proximity to your known ancestors? Families seldom migrated alone in the early 1800's, and you will find time and again that several families from the same community in SC are found in the same counties in other states. Knowing who the neighbors are in each location can help you place your ancestors in the right county in SC. It's not foolproof, and you'll need to look at a LOT of other records, but it just might help. Cheers, Victoria Proctor State Coordinator, SCGenWeb <http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/3837/>
