    3. Hi Fred, Be warned that the frontier people ventured into the wilderness faster than the counties could be expanded. It seems that when the land was outside recognized counties, the default seemed to be to use Craven County. You will even find plats recorded in Craven County that are in what is now North Carolina. The SC Archives in Columbia make a handy little booklet on the county changes that includes maps (The Formation of Counties in South Carolina).
