I know he was in the Spartenburg area most of his life and in Chester co.My ggrandmother is buried in in Glendale Cemetery so I know I want to go by and see her grave. Is the Columbia Library woth the stop? Corene from Texas
Hi, Someone gave you a place to go, but who are you looking for? There was a Spartanburg-List that I belonged to at one time; that too might be helpful...if still operating. Who are your ggrandparents? Is the Columbia > Library woth the stop? > Corene from Texas ------------------------------------------------------------- The SC has a centralized records system, so all county and state records are located at the SC State Archives in Columbia, SC. All census records, soundex for 1880-1930 censuses, book indexes for others are there as well as the actual census records. Each county probate records, both wills and estate administrations are on microfilm with indexes for each county. Equity court records, etc are also available for each county in this one central location. Barbara Langdon has done some wonderful books on implied marriages from probate and court records that can help you go to the right probate record to prove a wife, from her married name being given in her father's estate, thus implied marriage. Brent Holcombe has writted and extracted much info. on SC genealogy records and his books are there. Only 30 minutes away is the Camden Archves & Museum, Camden, SC which houses the SC DAR Library collection, SC Colonial Dames collection, and many books on other states. It also has many cemetery records from many different counties in the DAR and regular collections. I think they have more of those than the state Archives. Problem, with budget cuts, the State Archives is open 8:30 -4:30 each day Mon-Fri. and not on weekends. Staff cuts don't make it easy to get personal help. Camden Archives has great staff, altho the best has recently retired, but it would have only the probate records etc for Kershaw Co. Has all the census records for the state, and all the death certificates 1915 - 1952 that are also available at the state archives. Since Chester Co, was a part of the old Camden District, they may have lots of records at the Camden Archives on that area that I am not aware of. I don't research that area. You might get in touch with them at [email protected] or check out the web site at www.mindspring.com/~camdenarchives/index.html or 803-425-6050 and ask for Agnes Corbitt. The Camden Archives is open 8 - 5, Mon - Fri and 1st and 3rd Sunday afternoons per month. SC STATE ARCHIVES: SC Department of Archives and History 8301 Parklane Rd. Columbia, SC 29223 803-896-6100 http://www.state.sc.us/scdah/homepage.htm http://www.archivesindex.sc.gov/ The Caroliniana Library contains massive newspaper collections and the work of several noted genealogist, one of which I am familiar is Leonardo Andrea files. He did much, much work on SC families in the 1940s or so. Caroliniana Library 803-777-3131 University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC http://www.sc.edu/library/socar/ Andrea file listing: www.andreafiles.com will list the family surnames that they have files and folders on. All three of these librarys are within 30 to 45 minutes from Camden, with the Caroliniana library being about 20 minutes from the State Archives. The state Archives and the Camden ARchives have nearby places to stay. The Carolinina is downtown Columbia in the Horseshoe of the USC Campus, so I think places to stay near there would be more expensive. So... to research SC, these are good spots to go. Good luck in your search. Billie Jones Camden, SC [email protected]
