Eisenhower based on a national survey identified Henry Laurens as one of 112 Americans of distinction in many varied fields of activity whose papers were important in documenting the American past. The project was subsequently organized by Philip M. Hamer in 1961. The first volume was published by the University of South Carolina Press in 1968. The project has evolved in style and scope to reflect the most important changes in the field of historical editing, while adapting the most pertinent technological advances to the work. The most recent volume (14) was published in 1994.
