Hi Ted & Freda, on a trip recently, i veered off the interstate to take a look at Blakely Battle Park (Lincoln's War)near Mobile, Alabama. At the top of the road, highest point in Baldwin Co. AL, there is a cemetery dedicated to Zachariah GODBOLD of SC, the only rev war vet buried in Baldwin Co. AL. I had this Zachariah in my notes for Godbold & Nettles in Wilcox Co. AL, wonder if he is the same one? p. 68 - "In abt 1735, John Godbold was among the 1st to come to the region of Liberty Precinct (now Marion Dist.) SC, located lower down the Pedee River from the Welch Neck settlement. He was an Englishman and a long time sailor in the British service. During the French & Indian wars, he was plundered of almost all the personal property he had gathered Of thirty negroes, twenty-two were taken from him and never recovered. He m. Elizabeth M'Gurney, they had John, James, and Thomas; and Elizabeth and Anne. John m. Priscilla Jones and they had Zachariah, John and Jesse Godbold. Zachariah was a captain in the Revolution; James m. Mourning Elizabeth Baker and had 6 sons - John James, Zachariah, Cade, Abram, and Thomas. Of these, John and Zachariah were lieutenants in the Revolution. Thomas was the father of the late Hugh Godbold of Marion Co. SC. Hugh d 1859 and was possessed of a large and valuable fund of information as to the early settlements on the Pedee and their s! ubsequent history and extraordinary tenacity in genealogical details used in this book. Thomas, the third son, married Martha Henson? and had four sons: Stepeh, David, Thomas and Ely. Of these Thomas was the father of Asa Godbold of Marion and Ely, who left a son bearing his name.
