I know that I have heard the name Colonel SHERIFF; I am from Pickens Co. and I'm sure that's where I heard it from. He is prob. from the same SHERIFF line that I descend from, but I don't have him in my database. Maybe he's the following child, called Samuel: 1880 Census Place: Easley, Pickens, South Carolina Source: FHL Film 1255238 National Archives Film T9-1238 Page 27D Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace Exodus SHERIFF Self M M W 35 SC Occ: Farmer Fa: SC Mo: SC Lettie SHERIFF Wife F M W 37 SC Occ: Keeping House Fa: SC Mo: SC William SHERIFF Son M S W 12 SC Occ: Works On Farm Fa: SC Mo: SC Eliza SHERIFF Dau F S W 11 SC Fa: SC Mo: SC Janie SHERIFF Dau F S W 6 SC Fa: SC Mo: SC Samuel SHERIFF Son M S W 5 SC Fa: SC Mo: SC Laura SHERIFF Dau F S W 1M SC Fa: SC Mo: SC Nearby: 1880 Census Place: Easley, Pickens, South Carolina Source: FHL Film 1255238 National Archives Film T9-1238 Page 27C Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace Alfred SHERIFF Self M M W 37 SC Occ: Farmer Fa: SC Mo: SC Nancy J. Doubt that this helps you much, but I think it's possible your Colonel may have changed what he was called bec. there were several Samuel SHERIFFs in the same family. I hope this at least gives you a place to start. This was the only male the right age in either Pickens or Anderson Counties, SC Good searching! Dolores M.
