Rootsweb has a great search website for finding out which county a particular town is in http://resources.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/townco.cgi Columbia actually is located in 2 counties Lexington and Richland. I guess it grew across the county line. Monya, There are several Nathan(iel) THOMPSONS beginning in early Surry Co, VA. If I was to guess I would do so that yours born in NC belongs to those families. I see wills of both William THOMPSON (1762 and John THOMPSON (1763) have a Nathaniel. I do have NC records and will check those.
