Just happened across the 1685 letter of Judith GUITON (later MANIGAULT) at the national Huguenot site. She was among those Huguenots who escaped from France & made their way to South Carolina. Thought it was fascinating & others might enjoy too. URQ
I've been working with the emigrant records to VA today and see some of the SC names. Audrey Source: Some Emigrants to Virginia, Second Edition, Enlarged Compiled by W. G. STANARD "LOVELACE, Francis ( in Virginia 1651, &c.); son of Sir William LOVELACE, of Woolwich, Kent, and brother of Richard LOVELACE, the poet; was afterwards Governor of New York. V. M., XVII, 287. "BARNES, Jacob (in Virginia 1677, &c.); son of Edward BARNES and brother of Joshua BARNES, Greek Professor at Cambridge. V. M., XVI, 203." Note: All three of these names, Jacob, Edward and Joshua BARNES are seen on wills in Isle of Wight Co, VA. (aep) "ROPER, Thomas (in Virginia 1623), 'of Milden in the County of Bedfordshire, gent.' V. M., XIX, 133." "MOSELEY, William (d. 1655), Lower Norfolk county; formerly of Rotterdam, merchant; but of English birth or descent. Lower Norfolk Records." "MATTHEWS, Luke (in Virginia 1694, &c.); formerly a tailor in the city of Hereford. V. M., IV, 365; VI, 408, 409."
Robin- I noticed in the LDS catalog that you have published a history of the CANTEY family. Since I am also a descendant, I am interested in purchasing information. URQ

My reference to the USRY family is only from a copy of a listing in what is known as the Atlas Pitman Bible. Calvin Usry is listed as being born October 6th, 1823 and his death as April 24th 1854. He was married February 10th 1848 to Mary Miller. Mary Miller was born May 5th 1826 and died August 25th 1858. Mary Miller Usry, a widow, married Zachariah Sutton, December 3rd, 1857. It would appear that Calvin and Mary Miller USRY had three children before he died. George Franklin Usry b. October 9th, 1849, Sarah Catharine Usry, b. December 15th, 1850 and Thomas Jefferson Usry, b. May 25th, 1852. Sarah Catharine USRY married Atlas Pitman, July 6th, 1865. dts --------------------- Ref your message: rummager@comcast.net Tue Jun 27 09:39:17 2006 I have Ussery - England to Va to NC to Lancaster District. That's a lot for one cemetery and appears that the family stayed in SC. One time I promised someone to work on the MC LAUGHLIN family, but don't think I ever did that. Many of the SC, as well as Edgefield families, specifically, intermarried with our families that migrated to AL about the time it became a state (1819). One of those was a Baptist minister, William MC LAUGHLIN. Greetings from SC. Effingham Associate Reformed Presbyterian church held its Centennial Celebration on June 18, 2006. There was a brief church history with a list of founding members & former ministers distributed, & some of you may be interested. This church is located in Florence County. "On June 17, 1906, a small group of believers formed Effingham Presbyterian Church in a farming community just south of Florence, SC. The church had its beginning a few years earlier, however, in the Tans Bay School in the McLaughlin Community. A teacher at Tans Bay, Miss Kate McKENZIE, conducted a Sunday School in the school house. Reverend Charles P. COBLE, the pastor of nearby Hopewell Presbyterian Church, joined Miss McKENZIE's missionary efforts by preaching at the school one or two afternoons a month. The new mission soon moved its meeting place to the Effingham School where Rev. COBLE began to conduct regular services. Long interested in establishing a church in Effingham, Mrs. J. S. McCALL, Effingham resident and member of the Florence First (Presbyterian) Church, recognized the mission's potential. It was largely through her help and influence that the necessary steps were taken to organize the mission into a church. Upon Rev. COBLE's presentation of a 26- name petition to the Pee Dee Presbytery, a commission was formed to perfect church organization. On June 17, 1906, the commission met and, after a sermon by Rev. mr. CLARK, the new church to be known as Effingham Presbyterian church welcomed its founding members: Mrs. J. S. McCALL, Miss Emma McCALL, Miss Annie McCALL, Furman ALLEN, W. M. ALLEN, Miss Effie ALLEN, J. T. ENDY, Mrs. Ella McPHERSON, B. P. HATCHELL, A. R. McLAUGHLIN, Mrs. A. R. McLAUGHLIN, J. A. McLAUGHLIN, Miss Jennie McLAUGHLIN, J. N. TURNER, Mrs. B. H. TURNER and Ellie TURNER. A lot donated by H. B. McCALL became the permanent home of Effingham Presbyterian Church..." [Next is a history of the construction of various portions of the church.] Pastors in chronological order: Rev. Charles P. COBLE Rev. Arthur E. SPENCER Rev. H. B. McLAUGHLIN Rev. H. W. HEAD Rev. P. D. PATRICK Rev. D. H. DULIN Rev. E. C. CLYDE, Sr. Rev. W. E. LELAND Rev. L. E. JORDAN Rev. J. E. CRAIG Rev. Edgar D. BYERS Rev. O. W. PERRELL Rev. Alan B. WELLS Rev. Charles TAYLOR Dr. Charles A.
