Billie, Did I send the ROPER information to you from Brunswick County, VA? Am sure I sent to Pam Stone who has the HOWERTON line. She thinks that could be OVERTON as time moved along. OVERTONS went to Jefferson County, AL and are listed with POOLS as some of the first families of Leeds, AL. thanks for the info. This is ALBUQUERQUE, NM, and yes the weather is delightful but I miss the Cujo vines in SC, the boiled peanuts and the good ole bar-be-que and the friendly "Hey". My Hartley was Jeremiah Hartley, my grandfather, born in Georgetown County, near Andrews, 10 April 1876, married Theodoshia Lambert, 10 Mar 1896, from same area; Doshia was born 15 Dec 1882; Jerry (Buck) Hartley moved his family to Alcolu, Clarendon County, 4 miles from Manning, to work in the Alderman's sawmill. My grandparents were "biologically gifted", had 13 children. My great grandfather, Jeremiah Hartley was in the Civil War; he was born about 1834 in SC and served in Co. F, Hagood's S.C. Infantry; he was paroled at Appomatox Courthouse, 9 April 1865. And that is all I know! Fran in ABQ

That is the ONLY thing I have ever been able to find out about her that shows a connection to William Dean. We find in Edgefield Co. Deeds where William is selling land with another wife, Nancy, by 1790. Rebecca Hartley Withers is a complete mystery to us. I have attached her to this family without proof that they are one and the same, as I found a person by that name in Abstract of Wills of Charleston Dist., SC 1783-1800 compiled and edited by Caroline T. Moore, Will of her brother, Richard Withers Book B - 1786-1794, p. 8 Charleston Dist, SC. LDS records give some info on her, but nothing that proves she is the same person who belongs to my Dean line and to the Withers line. Would you possibly have any information on her? I have some ancestry of this Withers family from LDS Online records at <FamilySearch.org>, but no further verification other than the will. and the following notes: Rebecca Hartley Withers might possible be the following person: In "Charleston Residents 1782-1794" by Carroll Ainsworth McElligott, Heritage Books, 1989, p. 104 I found a Rebecca Withers living at 8 Cumberland Street, Charleston, SC. This list includes residents listed in the city directory for the year 1794. On page 96, there is an Elizabeth Hartley living in 1790 at #9 Market Street. I do not know who this is as Rebecca's mother Elizabeth Newton Hartley's death date is given as 1759 in information downloaded from LDS site. Abstract Wills of Charleston Dist., Sc 1783-1800 compiled and edited by Caroline T. Linda Thanks for posting the information about the Confederate Relic Room. I had some questions and called the number. Learned that the number and address have changed as of about a week or so ago. Their exhibits will be up and available in a few weeks and they do have a small library. Mr. Bigham is the curator. The room is now located in the State Museum on Gervais Street. The new phone # 803-737-8095. linda
The Museum ya'll are talking about is called the Confederate Relic Room and Museum. It is located at: 920 Sumter Street Columbia, SC, 29201 803-898-8095 Linda Shull
Regarding the Confederate Hospital, that according to one answer was torn down in the1970s. Columbia has a Confederate Museun located next door to the Caroliniana Library , USC Campus, Columbia, SC. I would think that either of the following 3 places will have info. STATE ARCHIVES: SC Department of Archives and History 8301 Parklane Rd. Columbia, SC 29223 803-896-6100 http://www.state.sc.us/scdah/homepage.htm Carolinian Library 803-777-3131 University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC http://www.sc.edu/library/socar/ I looked under Museums in the Yellow pages of the Columbia Phone book, and found no listiing for the Confederate Museum. No listing under Confederate; no listing under Military (it does have displays of uniforms and items from all wars); Noting in the Blue pages (govt listings) Sorry, that last one I can't find. I don't know if the present Vet. Hospital would keep all those records or not... I doubt it. Good luck, Billie Jones
I have the pay roll records of four of my Confederate ancestors who fought in the Civil War. Can anyone tell me how I can use them to learn more about my family? Is there any way to obtain any more info about them? Is there anything else besides the payroll? Thanks, Fran in ABQ
Hi Folks, I need your help. I have an 1804 deed from Pendleton District where the seller was an Edward WADE and the buyer was a Moses HOLLAND. After the signature of the seller (Edward WADE) at the bottom there is a separate statement that reads "Received the day and year written mentioned Moses Holland seventy pounds being the full consideration money for the within mentioned tract of land - signed Richard WADE" I have limited experience reading early deeds but I have never seen a person different than the seller acknowledge receipt of the sales monies. What can we conclude, if anything, about this? Did Richard WADE have to be a relative, say son, of Edward WADE? What was the minimum age Richard WADE had to be to sign a deed statement? Did the buyer simply want somebody to acknowledge he had paid the sales price and this Richard WADE could be anybody or did Richard WADE have to be a relative (and have implied authority) to sign in this manner? Thank you. Eldon mailto:ewade@cfl.rr.com Researching: WADE and HAMES - SC, GA, AL
Columbians have had major problems with this newspaper ever since it was sold to Knight-Ridder. In my opinion, it's now a sorry newspaper that doesn't have a clue about impartially in reporting the news. Good luck in a letter writing campaign to a newspaper with an biased pre-set agenda. Fran, (if that's Albuqurque you're in God's country) Payroll and muster sheets are about all I got as military records. The REAL GOOD STUFF came as pension file documents ... his (the soldier) and his widow's . So far as I know the state where they lived when they filed for the pension is the place ... not necessarily the state for which they served. He listed all his kids and birthdates and places, marriage date to his wife... pretty helpful. Then on her request there was the date & place of his death ... great step in trying to get an obit...so think PENSION. : ) ron At 11:08 PM 4/9/02 EDT, you wrote: >I have the pay roll records of four of my Confederate ancestors who fought in >the Civil War. I first found a reference to this family in a book at the Kershaw Co. Public Library, Camden, SC called South Carolina Genealogies, Vol. 3. This was one of the first efforts to search for my Coursey family, and as you see, I did not get a complete notation on the book. Can do so if you would like. No further source documentation at this time. This line is NOT my direct line; In fact, I don't know for sure if it connects at all. However, there is a possibility that Jack, based on his date of birth, is a brother to my ggg-grandfather, about whom I have found little and to whom I cannot attach parents or 1st wife. The oldest son, John Henry, remained in Edgefiel Dist, SC in the area that is now McCormick Co. He is found in census data as Cosey and Corsey. I think they all were Courseys of various spelling. Notes for JOHN HENRY: 1860 Edgefield Co. SC Census - John Henry Coursey living with J.B. and Mary W. Williams age 17. Listed at the state archives in the Confederate Card Index as Pvt. John H. Coursey - Co D 14th SC Regulars. http://www.researchonline.net/sccw/ contains information on The South Carolina14th Infantry Regiment. John Cosey served in Co. D known as the Edgefield Riflemen. Roll of Company "D," Fourteenth Regiment Infantry, South Carolina Volunteers, - all from Edgefield: John Cosey, age 20, wounded at Chancellorsville. According to a booklet at the state archives, one John H. Coursey received an artificial limb. I have not followed up on that. 1870 Edgefield Co. I have not been in touch with Steve in a couple of years, so I do not know if the email address is still valid. Maybe the phone # will help. If you get in touch with him, I would also like to hear from him, so please pass the message on. I am ccing this message to the address I have just in case it works. NOW..... you know everything that I do about this line. Please keep me posted about your findings on Ann E. - by the way, do you have any census records for her that show her state of birth. If she is the same, the Ann E. in my files was born SC, according to the 1850 census, and the area was at the time of her birth still Edgefield Co., SC Do you have absolute proof of her birth in Richmond Co., Ga.. It is just a little south and west of the Savannah River area dividing McCormick Co., SC (formed in 1916 from western Edgefield and south western Abbeville cos). I was born in Richmond Co, Ga. only because that is where the hospital was. I was raised in North Augusta SC, a separate town across the Savannah River from Augusta. I am sure if my children were asked to fill in my death certificate they would put North Augusta, SC down for my place of birth, so maybe that is what happened with Ann?? Get back in touch and lets talk about our Coursey research. Billie Jones Camden, SC tjones@camden.net
