Does anyone have any knowledge of John J. Burke who was born in April 1880 and died in Charleston on April 16, 1912. He was married to Annie Louise Heffron also of Charleston. She was born Feb 22, 1884. I would appreciate any help you might be able to give me. Jean
I am looking for the family of Robert E. Couturier who lived in Charleston, SC in the late 1880's until 1903. He married Alice Gertrude Heffron before 1901 in Charleston. She was born August 01, 1876 in Charleston. They had two children Aline Couturier b: 1901 and Norma Couturier b: 1903. I would appreciate any help you might be able to give me. Jean Royal
Hope you'll get this data on the rootsweb cemetery inscription site. The data from SC is not very thorough and this is such a help. Most researchers reading this will probably have data or access to data on at least one cemetery in their area. We really need to participate in getting this data on line. Carolyn and Paul: You guys need to be on the lookout for Equity Court records for the county of residence. This is where guardianship was established. Ask the library in the involved county what records they hold. Ask the South Carolina Department of Archives and History as well. I have found a gold mine of genealogical information in these records. Good luck. This interests me very much also. I have a child born in 1806 (Mason Lang Mosley), who's mother re-married in 1808 (to John Scogin) around Edgefield/Barnwell I believe and his step-father is referred to as "his guardian" yet I have been unable to find any records. They did move to Ala about 1818, but I doubt that he would have waited so long to become his guardian. Any help appreciated. Hello list, I am interested in learning about what types of records are available in SC in guardianship situations. I have a good lead that an ancestor was sent to live with relatives from SC to GA between 1797 and 1810. I don't know if any legal transfer of guardianship would have been required or whether it would have been in SC or GA. So, here are my specific questions. What counties have guardianship records from that time period? Were other records created that might have the same type of information? As a resident of Atlanta, GA, what would be the best way to access any available records? Thanks for any help. I'll be glad to answer any clarification questions you might have. My great-grandfather was born in ABT,1868 to a woman named Mary MAJOR. I have been unable to find out anything about Mary MAJOR, except that I have information that she is listed on a later Anderson County deed in 1893, with the married surname "VAGERTY" or "VAGARTY". I can find nothing on those surnames anywhere. I"m thinking that the handwriting has been misread and that the name is perhaps "HAGERTY" or "HAGARTY". I still can't find evidence of that surname in the upstate area of South Carolina during that time. Does anyone know of this surname in South Carolina in the late 1800's? This is my brick wall. Thanks for any help. deborah
Hi, I see quite a few MAJOR(S) in Anderson County, SC. No surname spelled as you did the other one, but HAGGARD is there; also HAGGERTY is a name in the south. Three Marys didn't lend a connection to the other family, but the records are earlier than you mention. I you have the children of your MAJORS family, maybe we can find the direct line.
