    1. [SC] Chester County, SC Marriages of Hemphill, McCaw or Chesnut Line
    2. Hello List Members, I am researching some connections to the Hemphill family Line. I would appreciate any information on a Jane L. (or L. Jane) Hemphill who married a James (or John McCaw in Chester County, SC sometime before 1829. I have the information on the Jane Hemphill part, but not the McCaw part. Also I am researching any connection to Chesnut (Chesnutt/Chestnut) who were in the Chester County around the 1830s. I believe my ggg-grandfather Alexander Henry married a Chesnut, but I need more evidence. They were all Presbyterian, but I don't know what church in Chester Co. they would have attended. If anyone has a suggestion, I would appreciate it. A Little Note From, Shirley Krenzler ~>~

    3. The only DUKE listed in Old Pendleton Dist., 1800, is Abraham DUKE. Sorry! Dolores M. Pringle -----Original Message----- From: Joe and Wanda [mailto:jwd@vol.com] Sent: Monday, May 06, 2002 10:11 PM To: SC-Genealogy-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SC] Re: SC --- un-discovered family records of some DUKE family groups!! Hi, all. If a professional genealogist sees this, and would like to make me an offer to find the needed info, I am open to your thoughts, by private e-mail reply. Any student of the DUKE families of SC is welcome to share any info available, or to offer to help, as well, and I will also consider a fee for such assistance by him or her!! I am seeking any or all information which may be available in any SC census as follows: 1790, 1800, 1810, or 1820 Fed. census. Head of Household # 1 would be Robert DUKE, b. ca 1775-1785 (per estimated age, in 1840 census at about 60 years!) Since his wife's name will not be given, and we do not know her date of birth, any help on the details found in the census is most appreciated!! Most importantly, we hope to find an approximate number of children, living in this household, which may assist in determining the make-up of the family group, if at all possible!! One of his known sons, James DUKE, head of household # 2, may have been born ca. 1795-1800, and James's wife was Elizabeth Judith WILSON. Marriage location (thought to be in Fairfield District?, or county?) and date are not known, but some of their first children are said to have been born in Charleston Co., SC. There were eleven children of this marriage. Several of the younger ones were born in Perry Co., Alabama, after a migration to that area, about 1820-1830, or perhaps a bit later It is thought that, based on the DUKE family 'style' of which Robert was a part, Robert would have had more than one off-spring, but, to date, no definite records on that point have come to the attention of this seeker. James bought land in Perry Co., AL., in ca. 1832, or so, and Robert, his father, by now (probably) a widower, bought land in ca. 1836, nearby. Before the time of the census in 1840, James had deceased, Lizzie Judith was a widow and the head of her own household, and (Robert, apparently) a widower, age ca. 60, was living in the home with her, along with several of her younger children. The main questions are: 1. How many persons were found in the household of Robert DUKE, in any of the 1790, 1800, 1810 or 1820 Federal census? 2. Where was this family counted, in any census in which they are found? 3. What were the ages, and the gender of each person found?? 4. Where was the household of James DUKE found, in any of those same census records, and how many persons of what ages and gender were found, in that household?? The name of the wife of Robert, and the mother of James, is said to have been Anney KINSTON (or perhaps KINSLER?), but at this point, such information is merely based on a 'best guess' view-point. Can anyone with easy access to SC early state-wide census records assist?? All assistance is most gratefully appreciated!! Thanks, and my regards to any and all of you, who read this!! 3. There's certainly no shortage of genealogical data on the Duke family. I didn't find any Roberts in Charleston or Edgefield, but I did find one in Barbados,(b. 1732) which was a stopping off point for Charleston. Also, I ran across the following information which puts a Robert Duke in SC in 1793: Marriage Year: 1818 Marriage Location Code: GA The location code shown here is as originally provided to Broderbund - a one or two-character code, sometimes based on the first one or two letters of the location and sometimes based on other abbreviations. Unfortunately, these codes can not be accurately converted into a fully spelled-out form, due to potential conflicts in interpreting the codes. For example, the code "NE" could be New York, Nevada, or Netherlands. Therefore, we strongly recommend you take caution in making any assumptions about this location field. Please see the Introduction to this Archive for further information about locations. The gender of Robert Green Duke is male. Birth Year: 1793 Birth Location Code: SC The location code shown here is as originally provided to Broderbund - a one or two-character code, sometimes based on the first one or two letters of the location and sometimes based on other abbreviations. 3. Don: Like most things in this world - it's for sale:-) I purchased my copy from the Jasper County Chamber of Commerce office. If I remember correctly its cost is $25.00 payable to the Jasper County Historical Society. This is a really nice volume and well worth the $25. The only thing it "lacks" is an index of individuals. From what I understand, it is the culmination of a two-year survey of every burial site (black and white) that could be located in the county.
