And while you're looking for Bill's GAY surname, please check for THOMPSON for me? Charlotte
Does anybody have, or have access to, any wills and//or will indexes for Darlington County in the 1790 thru 1830 period? I am looking for any mention of the surname of GAY in that area. Thank you. Bill
Hello I visited Camden in the mid 90's and enjoyed visiting the Camden Archives. I found not only did I have I have ancestors in the Revolutionary War fighting for freedom, but Loyalists who were plundering SC to Florida, and settled for a time in St Augustine with the Spanish. The librarians were able to offer quite a bit of assistance. It seems my Schofield family was split between their allegiance to the Revolution or the King. One of them was the Schophol who was a leader of the anti-regulator faction in South Carolina, 10 years before. Hi Harold, Actually, I like the research very much. Finding a record feels like solving a mystery, but yes, I can get overloaded. I've seen that quote before, but surely it isn't always true. And...I know you were joking. Also, I fully understand how people feel when they need a record that proves their lineage. Remember back before computers when I hounded the mailman for mail bringing me information on our families. Thanks, Audrey ----- Original Message ----- From: <Dover2@aol.com> To: <SC-Genealogy-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 28, 2002 7:17 PM Subject: Re: [SC] Re: Lookups for SC records > > > Just joking when I quote some old satire: > > IT IS A PROVEN MAXIM THAT NO GOOD DEED EVER GOES UNPUNISHED. > > The deluge which has befallen you proves this. > > Harold > > > ==== SC-Genealogy Mailing List ==== > Need some help getting started with irc (INTERNET RELAY CHAT)? > Try: http://home.flash.net/~gen4m/ >
Wow Billy, that was some great information about Camden and being able to do a lot of research there. I live near the Va. line but once in a blue moon we do make the treck to Myrtle Beach. I apologize to those of you who will get this more than once, but I am cross-posting. Does anyone have access to either an index of wills or abstracts of will for the Darlington County area in the late 1700s and early 1800s? I am looking for ones that may mention the children, especially children of either Thomas or James GAY. I need to find out if either shows a son named Nathaniel born about 1812'ish. Thank you. Bill Hughes kinseeker4@earthlink.net
> Bill, > James wifes name was Ann Jackson Ferebee, born on 12/10/1880. > Don I'm gonna let you get away with claiming a ''senior moment'' on this one.........WHAT was Ann's date of birth???????????????? Bill
With all the querys and comments on SC-Genealogy-L@rootsweb.com about Talbert/Tolbert, I checked to see if I have any. I have not researched them, but have the following who married into the SELF line which connects to my HOLLOWAY lines of Edgefield Co., SC.> Greenwood Co. SC. HC Ouzts has a collection of Talberts, which he stores in an EXCEL spreadsheet. His files are his "electronic file cabinet", where he stores all of his little slips of paper, census finding, cem. findings, etc electronically. Since he also uses published family histories, which we all know from our own attempt to research our families generally contains errors, I am sure some of the connections need a lot more work. Very little PROOF given, but his files have helped point me into the right directions, and I work on proving the info. myself. I have more info. on the Self/Jennings/Holloway family to which his wife is connected. Billie Jones Camden, SC tjones@camden.net Descendants of William Lafayett "Billy" Talbert Generation No. 1 1. To all this may concern. Please do not ask for more lookups for awhile. I have got to undercover in this room. Looking through so many books has me working in a very small place and I need now to put things away. Thanks for understanding. Audrey

This is in response to a request for HEMPHILL, however, we have a STROUD line from VA>NC>SC>TX. Billie, There are quite a few GARRET wills in Laurens, SC. Have you seen those? So many of the families seem to have crossed over in the Upper SC counties. Do you want me to look, specifically, for a Thomas GARRET record? The Camden Archives and Museum, Camden SC has microfilm of the old newspapers. it also has all of the SC death certificates, all but the 1830 census for the entire state, ( will have that, but not yet), Mortality census records, houses the SCDAR Library collection with books put out by many chapters all over the state, plus purchased books of deeds, wills, cemetery, marriage, etc books. I do most of my research there, and I am an Edgefield Co. researcher. I go to the State Archives for copies of probate records. They have church records etc of churches in Kershaw Co. and lots of books, vertical files of family records, and a FTM program containing over 100,000 names that have been donated by various families, and research of others. The best newspaper collection I believe is at the Caroliniana Library on the campus of Univ. of SC in Columbia. Good luck, and come visit Camden.
