Lorine; My apologies on the comment re "nothing worthwhile." I don't know what I was even thinking about when I wrote that remark as I certainly don't feel that way about Olive Tree. I also apologize for opening up the entire can of worms. I don't usually react that way to a situation and I will not say that I have a reason for doing it this time. It was just bad judgment on my part. I do honestly think though that your pages are constructed somewhat on the confusing side, perhaps a little too busy. One entry close to the top of the page that I clicked on your link to in the message clearly said that is was for free ships data bases. However, when I clicked on it I got another Olive Tree page that was, to me, really unclear. I did eventually click on what I thought might get me to where I wanted to go and got a 3rd Olive Tree page that listed broad categories of lists with, I think, Specific country from and to selections on the left side and on the right side a selection of states. I selected 'South Carolina and I got the application form. This happened one or two more attempts at clicking on certain combinations. Another time I did get a list of states but it did not list South Carolina. I did try MD and VA but drew blanks when I searched on names. Of course I have been at this game long enough to be used to that. I found this info on John Cannady in Barnwell, S.C. I believe his son (or possibly grandson) is the John I am looking for that went to Emanuel County, Ga. Edmund Cannady was also in Emanuel County, Ga. Does anyone have any add'l info on this line? ======================================= >From "Court of Equity Records of Barnwell District, S.C." Abstracts of Genealogical Data found therein - First Book Pages 1-50; Compiled by Folks Huxford...page 42, 43. James RANDALL vs. John CANNADY, et. al. Partition. Filed Oct. 13, 1847. This proceeding relates to a tract of 100 acres of land in Barnwell District (B.D.) bought Sept. 13, 1804 by John CANNADY, SR., from William Moseley, Sr., deed recorded in deed book D, page 519 of B.D., which land CANNADY owned at his death in 1822. EXHIBIT A: Will of JOHN CANNADY, SR., dated Feb. 15, 1819, probated in B.D., May 24, 1822, devising all his estate to his wife Whitty for her lifetime and after her death to his sons, John and Edmund CANNADY and sons-in-law, William BURKHALTER, James BURKHALTER, John SELLERS and William BRYANT. Execurtor: James BURKHALTER. All parties resident of B.D. Said John SELLARS died before his father-in-law did, and was survived by his wife Whitty (a daughter of said John CANNADY, SR.) and four children, viz. Ann, John, James, and Sampson Sellars, all of B.D. Leter, on (blank date) said Mrs. Whitty Sellars died, and thereafter said Sampson Sellars became 21 years of age, and he and his brother James deeded their interest in said lands to petitioner. Petitioner alleges that certain parties are in possession of portions of this land under some claim unknown to him, viz. The South Carolina Canal & Railroad Co., Mary Swartz, John Gardner, Rachel Barrs, and the Intendent & Wardens of the town of Aiken "otherwise called the Town of Aiken." The proceedings show this land laid inside the new town of Aiken, and a plat of same is in the file showing the railroad running through the n.e. corner of the tract, the Aiken Town Academy standing in the northwest corner, and lots on the northeast side of railroad being in possession of Schwartz, Gardner and the R.R. Hi to all, Just getting in on the tail end of this. I began researching on the computer in 1998. Olive Tree Genealogy was well known then. I am getting my list mail sporadically, so I don't know the original question. I just know it is a well-known, highly reputable site. I guess it just amazes me that it would be questioned. Hi Hope I appreciate your comments (I'm the person who sent the link to my webpages) and agree with you. However, I feel compelled to point out that I have over 500 FREE databases on The Olive Tree Genealogy, and these are freely available to all researchers to use. There's no tricks, no gimmicks - my site is a large one, over 2000 pages, and I think if people take the time to look around they'll soon realize its worth. My goal with Olive Tree Genealogy, which has been on the 'net since 1996, is to help others find their ancestors. That's why I spend my time gather databases to put online for everyone. As well as my own databases, I have what might be called directories. These are links to other sites that I consider of value to researchers. I try to label them all as offsite links, whether the databases are free to search or not (most are free) I also have some links to Ancestry.com - and they are labelled either as Ancestry.com, or pay-to-view, or offsite links. There's no trick, in fact I take pains to tell visitors that they don't have to subscribe, they can get the info for free with the free trials. The fact that some of my links to other sites are not of interest to everyone, should not detract from the main value of my databases that I offer. I think people should visit my site, use the free databases I have, and decide for themselves if they want to use my links to other sites. I was (am still am) really taken aback by the comments of a few of the subscribers on this list, because I feel they did not look at my site and see what I offer. I'm still bewildered by the comments just because I have a link to some FREE trials on Ancestry.com, and some links to some of their databases I think are worthwhile. Does everyone know that Ancestry.com owns Rootsweb which hosts this list (and all Rootsweb lists). That Ancestry.com hosts the USGenWeb sites? And Cyndis list? I think it's worth noting... All I can say is to repeat that my site has over 500 free databases and everyone is welcome to go and check it out. I'm not trying to trick anyone and I'm surprised that anyone would think I am. I'm sorry if subscribers on this list were offended by my post to the list - I thought I'd let those searching S. Is this a list for bashing ancestry.com or SC Ships List???
Hi Hope, You are right. There are more people who LIKE Ancestry than there are who DON'T like it. Many of the people who don't like it may not realize that it costs tons of money to maintain the servers that THESE email lists are hosted on. Many of the USGENWEB pages are freely hosted on Ancestry servers. The USGENWEB archive project is 100% hosted on Ancestry-owned servers. All of the "freepages.rootsweb.com" sites are FREELY hosted on Ancestry-owned servers. Many of those who don't like Ancestry really don't fathom just how much data is available with their subscription service. I for one could not imagine being a serious researcher without an Ancestry subscription. I wonder how many of us have sent a $10 fee to get some info from a genealogical society or other service only to be told that "nothing could be found". No refund...a lookup was performed and paid for. The fee for Ancestry is well worth it because I can do as many lookups through tons of databases as I want. Yes, they have their technical glitches once in awhile but they get fixed in reasonable time. I can deal with that. Just my opinion. Bill oldgoat@mindspring.com writes: > Just a comment. Just a comment. I don't like the fact that ancestry.com does try to lure you in, but I have to say I really have used their census information. Also, I did have some trouble with connecting, but after writing them, they added additional months to my subscription to make up for the trouble. Bill, Thanks for the comments. I avoid Ancestry like the plague. I will never subscribe to it. I have looked at her site and never found anything of value. The latest version brings me back to the same URL every time I try to get to the "free" data bases. Her page is covered with links to Ancestry. Jerry
Not to toss kerosene on the fire, but here in CA, many public libraries have computers for the patrons and ON THESE computers , more and more have access to Ancestry.com. They say is is very popular. She's not kidding, Jerry, Olive Tree Genealogy is THE place to start when looking for ships passenger list research. There are new passenger lists being added to her site all the time. You are going to find links to Ancestry all over the online genealogy world. If you choose not to subscribe, please don't discount the valuable data found on the rest of these sites. Dear Jerry, You clicked on one of my off-site links, that being one that leads to a free 14 day use of Ancestry.com's usual pay-to-view databases. I think the free trial is wonderful; that's why I link to it for researchers to use if they want to. :-) I'm sorry you were disappointed but I hope you will go back and look on my pages again because you missed my databases and search engine! http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/tousa_sc.shtml About half way down is a large yellow search box. It is my custom built Olive Tree Search engine, it's free to use, and it searches about 75 ships to S. Carolina. These are ships found on various sites on the Internet (free sites) and I set up the search engine to make it easier for researchers to find an ancestor from one spot. I'm working hard to find more ships online, so that I can increase the numbers on my South Carolina pages. The second link I gave http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/filmnos_al-fl-ga-sc.shtml has the film numbers from NARA & FHC for offline searches for Passenger Lists to North America 1820 to 1957. Researchers who can't find what they need in the online lists will be able to use my list of film numbers to order films for offline searching. I hope everyone enjoys and finds an ancestor or two! Lorine; Your post was about your records on ships to SC ports and, since it was addressed to the SC-L mailing list it should NOT have had a link, especially the leading link, to Ancestry.com. It is very evident to me that you are in collusion with Ancestry.com for some reason. Of course this is just my own opinion. Also, I am under the impression that type of activity is not proper as expressed by the list administrator. It seems you clicked on one of the links I have that shows researchers the 14 day free trial to Ancestry.com I think the free trial is a great thing, that's why I have the link to let researchers utilize it or not as they choose. I doubt they have what I do though in the way of ships passenger lists to South Carolina :-) I'm sorry you didn't scroll further down my page at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/tousa_sc.shtml About half way down, you will see my yellow search box, one that you can use to look for your S.C. ancestors on ships. It's my Olive Tree custom built search engine, it's free and it searches 73 ships at present. I'm working hard to find other online passenger lists to include in that search engine, and hopefully I'll have more ships soon. The second URL I gave has the film numbers as I noted in my email http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/filmnos_al-fl-ga-sc.shtml Good luck in your search!
