Could someone help me with a death record question? I am trying to acquire a death certificate for my husband's great grandfather who died in Spartanburg County. Unfortunately, we just know the year of his birth and death. With the name and year of death is it possible to find this record fairly easy for the researcher...as in are the records catalogued by name or date? Looking for William Charles Pruitt 1889-1938. Does anyone have any guidance on this matter? I am in Maryland and would have to do this via mail or a local researcher. Thanks for any information you can provide! John, thanks for letting us know about this. I enjoyed reading the Chronicle. I noticed there was a book titled Our Ulmer Heritage, by Lawrence H. and Martha L. Ulmer, 396 paged, 1996, indexed , $30. If you know of anyone who has this book, I would like to know if there is source or proof in the book that Elizabeth Ulmer married Christian Gates. If so, I would love to purchase the book. Thanks for any help on this. Davine

Dee, Would you be kind enough to search for the marriage of Alexander Higgins and Martha Unknown in the early 1800s in your South Carolina marriage books for me. Alexander was born abt. 1790 in the old 96th district of SC. He and Martha migrated to Lauderdale County, AL where most of their children were born, including my ggrandfather, Isaac Higgins (part of the children were born in SC). Any early Higgins marriages (prior to 1825) would be of interest to me. Thank you. Joyce in AR Researching: Bennett, Higgins, Kelley, Starling, Perkins

Robert Johnson who has been most closely identified with the 'Scheem... for Settling Townships.' In 1730 he proposed to the Board of Trade a plan for the orderly settlement of the South Carolina frontier. The board, in its imstructions to him, authorized the surveying of eleven townships that would rind the settled areas of South Carolina, serving as a defensive perimeter against both Indians and Spaniards." p. 115 "For the most part, South Carolina was lucky in its first two royal governors because merit had little to do with their selection. Robert Johnson (1730- 1735), son of a proprietary governor with important friends, lobbied strenuously for the position and got it." p. 116 "Like their British counterparts, the South Carolinians owed their positions to family connections. Broughton [Lt. Gov. Thomas Broughton 1730- 1737] was Gov. Robert Johnson's brother-in-law." There is much more about Gov. Johnson's political activities that you might enjoy reading in Dr. Edgar's book. I quickly skimmed all of the indexed references to Gov. Johnson & found no other genealogical info. URQ p. 160 "...When Gov. Robert Johnson died in 1735, South Carolina held its first state funeral. Two companies of militia served as an honor guard, royal councillors were his pallbearers, and members of the Commons House were official mourners. Thanks anyway.
Hi Kit, I don't have a GREENE line that I know of. For 15 years I worked with a history teacher from the school district whose students chose a pioneer of the San Joaquin Valley in CA. I did the genealogy for same. Duff GREEN was the most prominent ancestor of this family, and the reason I found his records. Well, they did have RANDOLPH-WASHINGTON-MAYNARD-STITH, etc. One cannot work on southern families without seeing these names. When you mention Eleanor (DUFF?), makes me wonder if this is your GREENE family...? I don't think you said. It could be that my Green ancestor's given name "Nicholas" was a surname. I did not realize a possible connection to them and do not have anything on the families of Nicholas or Hall. In researching my Hall family, I have an Elizabeth Green from the same area you mention. Also my Grandfather Hall is buried on a Nicholas family plot. Do you have Hall connections and do you know anything about the Nicholas family. I have a note concerning the death of Ida Nicholas by R. P. Nicholas. Kit
