My great-grandmother Hulda Rauton is the sister of Yancy Leonard Rauton who married Savannah Lott. Several individuals gave me some information to help me get started on the research on the Yancy line. I have the earlier generations, which I will share with you researched pretty well. Of course, it will never be finished, as I am sure there will always be something that is missed. The PROVEN direct line of Rauton/Rottons down to Yancy is as follows. I would appreciate any information on Jesse Taylor living in South Carolina 1790 thru 1830. He was probably born 1763-65ish. He was in the Edgefield area during those dates. His family all moved to Lowndes County, Alabama around 1830. When he died in 1834 his wife was Patience???. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Really..............................you got me! I am not real sure but from what I have been able to find I think he may be listed at times as a Thomas or Tho's is all that I saw for real. But I also wonder if perhaps he was not a Lewis, or else the son of a Lewis Floyd. Why do you have something that may help me out some. I do know that he shows up with a wife Elizabeth in GA but yet I can find no marriage yet for them. I find their children's but not theirs. If you are trying to locate your ancestors in South Carolina but have NO clues other than a "born in SC" on the census records of other states (GA, AL, LA, FL, TX etc), here's something you can try: Look at the census record again and note which families are living nearby. Are any of the family members born in SC? If so, look for their names in everything you can in the last known location for your ancestor (in Gail's case, GA): --tax and voter lists (who voted at the same place as your ancestor?) --deeds (who bought land near your ancestor; are there any deeds in their name showing sale of land in SC? If so, where was their land?) --cemeteries (are there other folks on the 1850, born in SC, buried in the same cemetery as your ancestor?) Which surnames seem to always be in proximity to your known ancestors? Families seldom migrated alone in the early 1800's, and you will find time and again that several families from the same community in SC are found in the same counties in other states. Knowing who the neighbors are in each location can help you place your ancestors in the right county in SC. It's not foolproof, and you'll need to look at a LOT of other records, but it just might help. Cheers, Victoria Proctor State Coordinator, SCGenWeb <http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/3837/>
Billie: Have you ever noticed any one with the surname of Floyd listed in the Probate section in SC records? I am trying with all my might to locate some sort of clue as to who Tho's Floyd was who shows up in Colleton Co. on the 1850 census age 12 with I suppose his Mother Elizabeth Floyd age 30. I have a very strong feeling that perhaps his Father died there. I can't tell really because back on the 1840 it only lists heads of household. One strong clue in my favor is this: There were at least two Lewis Floyd men in the general area of SC in the 1840 Census and later on as an adult Tom {sic in GA} named a son Lewis M. Floyd. So perhaps I seek the Probate records of a Lewis Floyd In Horry Co. I found that year a J. L. Floyd so this could be Lewis on p. 337 a Lewis Floyd shows up on p. 325 that same census and a Lewis H. Floyd shows up on p. 348 same census all in Horry Co. SC. Now the man Lewis H. Floyd shows up with 2 males under 5 and my Tho's would be under 5 that year, himself being the male age 20-30 and one female age 5-10 and one female must be his wife age 20-30. I suspect this is them, but would need to know is this woman in age group 20-30 Elizabeth. The Elizabeth with Tho's in Colleton the very next Census does show up as 30 years old. So this does seem to fit. Can you please help me to find out if this is my Elizabeth mother of Tho's Floyd and if perhaps this is the Tho's Floyd who grew up to be a lumber Cutter and moved over into GA into Charleton Co. and also married a woman named Elizabeth and had about six children in all. I have them in GA just can't place him before that for sure. Confused in Florida, Gail
Don't forget to ask for PROBATE RECORDS, not just WILLS. The SC State Archives has a microfilm for Edgefield Co. that I use all the time that is an index to Probate records, both wills and intestate administrations. Only the wills show up in Will Books. I would assume that other counties have the same records and an index can be found on them, just as with the Edgefield Probate. I have found much useful info. in the estate settlements when the accountings are made by the administrator - they list such items as payment for clothes, tuition etc for minor children, give the accounting for the legatees receiving their portion and the date they did so, which often helps determine their age. Also husbands of daughters are given. Often the widow has remarried and her share is paid out in her new name. That is certainly not in the will. Even when there is a will, I use the probate records and not the will books so I can see what other info. they might contain. Also, if you find an abstract, I recommend that you order the entire record, as often I have found the abstracts left out information important to me, and are sometime misleading because all info. cannot be given in the space alloted for the abstract. Hopefully, your family got into a squabble about their inheritance. If so, there is an Equity Suit that will name everyone involved, their relationships, etc. This often happens where there are two marriages, and the equity suit is wonderful to show who goes in what family. There is an index of these Equity suits as well, and micrifilmed records of the actual cases. Carol Wells just released a small book on Equity Records in Edgefield Co. I have already found some good into. in her book. I have not done much with other court records yet, but they are also at the State Archives, as well as in the actual counties I would assume.
