I just received an advertisement for joint pain from the Humor Network through your website. Does anyone remember the naming conventions (prevailing in the 1820s) for daughters and sons? i. e. first son named after paternal grandfather, third daughter named after paternal grandmother, etc. (I know these are probably not right). More specifically, whom would the third daughter be named after? Thanks, Eldon mailto:ewade@cfl.rr.com Researching: WADE, HAMES
Here's a couple of good links concerning naming patterns. http://www.generations.on.ca/genealogy/naming-pattern.htm http://www.winshop.com.au/mhampton/namepatn.html donna ----- Original Message ----- From: "Eldon Wade" <ewade@cfl.rr.com> To: <SC-Genealogy-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 31, 2002 1:54 PM Subject: [SC] Naming conventions. ED is Enumeration District. I believe it is found in the upper right hand corner. If you go to 1920 Federal Census for Greenville, SC, not for the city; you will find that it is listed by numbers. Marion
Thank You all for telling me ... yes it was a district. I really appreciate it. :) Theresa
Hi Theresa, Might be East District. Each section was a district. Not a township. Greenville Co. was divided into small blocks and numbered. I have not looked at many census records from there although the ones I did look at was greek because the different districts didn't mean anything to me. I knew them by the mill communities. There are somewhere around 50 districts in the county. You would have to get a map with them marked I guess. I just received one in my family history book but I don't know where they got it. -----Original Message----- From: Theresa [mailto:morocco2@lv.ffni.com] Sent: Tuesday, August 27, 2002 5:16 PM To: SC-Genealogy-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SC] Re: attn: Marion Marion, Does ED 19 mean District 19 ? Brandon Mills may have been in West Greenville, but I'm not sure. I'll try to remember to ask my mother tomorrow; she grew up in Greenville and knows the place like the back of her hand. Question? I found out that Brandon Mills is a community, and there use to be a Brandon Mill. Now I have another question..... I can't find a Brandon Mills as a township for census, so would anyone know what I would be looking for as far as a township for this area in Greenville? Thanks Again, Theresa ==== SC-Genealogy Mailing List ==== South Carolina Genealogical Resources http://www.crosswinds.net/~southcarolina/Societies/societies.html
Dolores, Karon and List, I did try to look at a few maps I seen but I didn't see anything that said Brandon Mills on it. The names I'm looking for are Grace Donald WALKER who believe she married Andrew David ROGERS/RODGERS. This was in 1927 and maybe a few years before. I can't seem to find them anywhere. So maybe if they are living in a another household if I knew what township Brandon Mills Community was in I might be able to find them on the 1920 or 1930 census I hope. Thank You, Theresa
Theresa, There is a map that tells you what district each community is in and I just had one on Sat. night and now it has disappeared. I hope I didn't toss it. I got my copy from the SC archives. Maybe tomorrow I can find it. I have loaded the new August 2002 BCHS Newsletter. http://www.rootsweb.com/~scbchs/081102.html
Theresa, Each mill community in the Greenville area where there was a mill was named after the mill. Such as Brandon, Dunean, Judson, etc. It was still in Greenville. If you lived in one of those communities, you lived on the mill hill. The mill built most of the houses and the workers bought the houses from the mill. I am from Dunean. Can anyone please tell me who these folks are? Feb. 15, 1877 -- Methodist Church, Ridgeway, (Fairfield County) S. C. Mamie Cason married A. L. Porter. It was a double ceremony, and James A. Kennedy marrying Minnie Coleman. Since it was a double ceremony I assume they were relatives, or at least, very close friends. Can anyone please give me a clue to the identities of each of the above?? Theresa, Iam not from there so this is just a guess but I would think that it is an address of one of the mill houses that someone that worked in the Brandon? Mill lived in.
