    1. [SC] old photograph of girls at Orangebury Collegiate Institute
    2. John
    3. Anyone, please. I have a photograph of my grandmother and her classmates at OCI which was taken around 1907 and would like to be able to identify any of the 61 "girls" who are pictured with her. Living in Massachusetts, I'm not able to research the records in Orangeburg and cannot find anything about OCI on the web. As far as I can tell OCI did not merge or change its name to any of the local colleges in and around Orangeburg, and so, I presume, OCI just closed its doors. Is there anyone that could tell me more about the history of OCI and anyone in the photo. Thanks very much John Mole

    1. [SC] Samuel Taylor/Ann Plowden
    2. Edward L. Manigault
    3. Betty: I may be able to help a little with Sam Taylor and Ann Plowden. I have them born abt. 1720, moving to South Carolina from Virginia in 1750 and having at least two children, Susannah and Samuel Plowden. I have that Susannah married Capt. Mouzon, but no info on Samuel Plowden Taylor, except that he lived long enough to witness his sister's will (dated March 19, 1817). Sorry, I do not have verification for any of this. My mother, who was from Manning, S. C., often spoke of the Plowden family. Do you have information about them, prior to their move to South Carolina? I have a lot of early Plowdens before 1700 and back to early England, but not sure I have them properly tied to S. C. group. Hope this is enough to give you a path to follow. His parents were said to have died while he was quite young. He studied the carriage maker trade in Augusta, GA and later moved to Winnsboro, SC. If anyone has any information, I'd appreciate hearing from you. 3. Audrey and all: We now at long last know who the parents of Hezkiah Cockrum b. 2/19/1762 Halifax Co. VA were, They were Daniel Cockrum of Halifax and Martha his wife. After his untimely death, Martha was found in the court order books as having married again to Samuel Pegg/Pigg and this is why Hezikiah Cockrum witenssed a deed for them later on in SC this is also why Hezikiah named a daughter Martha and a son Daniel. 3. Hi Audrey, I have no doubt that relatives are often the ones who witness deeds (I have several deeds myself that were witnessed by relatives) but I was having trouble with the word ALWAYS in the rule. I think that OFTEN may be a better choice of words. Thanks, Eldon mailto:ewade@cfl.rr.com Researching: WADE, HAMES -----Original Message----- From: Audrey E. Eldon, I am going to share a deed with you that really excited me where this rule is concerned. We have an old letter, 1930, that tells us "we are from Adam POOL", but the only Adam POOLE who could have been our ancestor didn't leave a will, and in constructing his family as much as we can, John POOL doesn't particularly fit. John POOL m. Mahulda HOLLOWAY and I have suspected that she was a daughter of one, William HOLLOWAY because of other records. Will be back with the deed. 1. Re: [SC] Clues to maiden names in deeds?
    2. Jim & Gaila
    3. Hello I haven't found the second witness to be the Wife's family to be consistent. Not as a rule, hard to say who would be witnessing the deed. Usually family, neighbours and friends. If you look through the book of deeds on a day, one name will be mentioned several times and that may be a person also waiting to have his deed organised. I would certainly try to know who the witness was, to see if there was a clue for a maiden name. About naming conventions, it seemed to be stronger in Scottish, Italian and English names. The third child usually would have been named after a parent, but then in the early 1800's you would often get a child named for a general or statesman- and I have seen relatives name the third child after their brother or sister. If you look at the age of the children and their is a gap, you might think a child died. Can you look at the name of the children and see a pattern, or if you see another pattern. One family named every child after a famous General: French and russians as well as English and Americans. You have to wonder what they were thinking. Best regards, Gaila
