I am seeking the following obit: Ruth Ann (Rudy) Riggs who died March 16, 1998 in Beaufort, SC. She was born Aug 7, 1943 in MD. She was married for 36 years to Jim Riggs. Any help would be appreciated. Stephanie Grohol
I have a Lucy Atkinson born about 1760, died 1828 in Sumter, SC who was married 1st to a Mr. Fort and had one son, Wiley Fort. Then she married Gilbert Crosswell about 1785. According to her will, she had one sister Sylvia Spight living in GA about time of her death. Does anyone have any information on Wiley Fort, and the Mr. Fort, husband of Lucy Atkinson? --- Lee and Billie Jones <tjones@camden.net> wrote: > Audrey Pool posted the following: > > Will and Deed Book I, Isle of Wight County, VA by John Bennett > BODDIE."Report of a jury how Wm PARSONS came to his death. That name is not as prevalent as many others, or should I say, common...? Sometimes I think they may have seen the "R" as an "N" and see HOLDEN, an easy error to make. However, I checked HOLDEN for given names too. Will try to remember to watch for your family. If not, jog the memory now and then. Still have more of SC to look at. Jesse HOLDER was married to Mary LANGSTON, d/o Solomon LANGSTON and that interested me because that LANGSTON family connects to the POOL family of Laurens, SC. To June Millwood in Memphis There are a couple of books published by various DAR chapters of SC in the Camden Archives and Museum, Camden, SC (houses the SCDAR Library) that are entitled Bible Records. One I have used and have sited in my sources is "South Carolina Bible Records" compiled by Genealogical Records Committee, Richard Winn Chapter, SCDAR, 1943. Camden web site: www.mindspring.com/~camdenarchives/index.html Maybe someone there can help you. The book above is book Book # 38 in the collection. Just after the Revolutionary War, many men were named Green. I wonder is this for General Greene of the Rev War? I come across so many men named Green as their proper first name. Any thoughts? Gaila
Hello If this took place in South Carolina, I would look for the book series, "Implied Marriages through Land Deeds". If it is Georgia, I would look at Guardian and Administration records, Land deeds and even look at other counties, as in this era it might be registered in more than one county. People often brought their deeds back to the courthouse after it was rebuilt and re-registered their documents. Always put the names into your queries, in case someone else has information, I don't see which surname you are looking for. Good luck, Gaila snip> > Thank you for responding. > > His wife Nancy Ann did sign her dower rights when they sold some land > > in 1804 but the deed does not give her maiden name but rather her > > married name. Several years ago I found the following book in the Birmingham, AL Public Library: Wilbur Goolsby Park, "Moses Park (1738-1828): His Descendants and RelatedFamilies, Vaughan and Wilcher." Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1991. I photocopied the Wilcher section of the book (p. 254-267), but the only mention I see (from a quick skim) in this section of Vaughans is that when the will of Thomas Wilcher, Sr. was brought into court, his widow Anne (Nancy), "relinquished unto Thomas Wilcher (II) and Alberto Vaughan ...my life estate to the farm on whiuch I now live and all the personal property..." Locations of the Wilcher family are listed as Amherst Co., VA, Burke Co. NC, and Warren Co. TN. I'm sure that there is quite a bit more on the Vaughan family in this book. Thomas Wilcher, Sr. is listed as born "probably in the 1740s in Virginia and died in Warren Co. TN in 1816.

Included are the counties from which Pittsylvania was eventually formed, and the counties formed from Pittsylvania, up until the separations. The book is appropriately titled A History of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and was published in 1929 (if I recall correctly). The only fault I have found is that the extensive index is not complete, and the volume must be read carefully to find all the mentions of the names one is researching. My wife was a VAUGHN and we have had little luck in finding much about them. What we know is that James Isaiah VAUGHN born in Richmond< VA., in 1842, was in Greene County, Ala., by the time of the Civil War and served in an Alabama Regiment. His first marriage ended in divorce or death, we don't know which, and James with his first son John came to Yalobusha County, Miss., where he married twice again and raised large families by these wives. John, the grandfather of my wife, married once to a Mary GREENWOOD and raised a large family some of them remain to date. This is basically all the info we have. Do you see a connection?? Jim Allen. Thank you Polly for your response. In reference to my previous email. We have the information after 1762 (approx.) to current times. I am just trying to find out what town/area they were in when James was born abt 1762 in SC and where in SC were his sons, John and George born. Who were his parents and where did they come from prior to SC. Trying to fill in that gap. And trying to make a connection back to Wales. If, indeed, that is where they originated. Yes, they were in TN and AL. Plus some fought for the Alabama Red Rovers and were massacred in Goliad, TX. I don't belong to Ancestry so I can't look anything up there. I use to, but became too expensive. Polly please contact your friend and give her my email address. Possibly we may have a connection. Thanks for any help. My Prev. email: Searching for the parents of James Vaughn b. abt 1762 in SC. Do not know the town. He married a Jane about 1785. They had two sons in SC. John b. 9 Sep 1786 and George b. 18 Aug 1790. Rumor is, that the Vaugh(a)n's originated from Wales. We have no proof of this at this time. By 1805 John was married and in TN. By 1808 George was married and in TN. By 1820 James had remarried a Susannah and was in Miss. So that puts James in SC from about 1762 to about 1790. Hopefully someone may have a few answers to knock down this block wall. Any help would be so wonderful. Thank you, Sincerely, DeLories Vaughn Washington State
Didn't catch the beginning of this thread, but Maude CARTER CLEMENTS wrote a very interesting and informative book on Pittsylvania County, VA, which covers a lot of territory. It can no doubt be obtained over InterLibrary Loan. I highly recommend it. Well that always helps us a lot. I had the same thing with a few of mine. The only other thing is to see if perhaps by some slim chance if the State had been sent a copy of the death cert. prior to the Courthouse fire but I sort of doubt it. However it never hurts to try. Then at least you can put that sourse to bed so to speak. I think they're very likely the same family, as the Meadors (also there) and some of the Hills and Beams all went into GA & AL. Some of the Beams and the Colemans eventually went to MS...but they all seem to connect to the Fairfield Co SC families if you can sort them out and get back that far. They were in the group from VA to the Carolinas...I think Caroline Co & Cumberland co VA... Doris....A Texan in Georgia..... Still shaking the family tree and dodging the nuts after 30+ years! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Audrey E. Pool" <ddpool@madnet.net> Hi Doris, The COLEMAN family that intermarried with MOBLEY/MOBBERLEY families from VA to Fairfield, migrated from Southside VA, the Robert COLEMAN. MOBLEY is my mother's line, but I think you and I have discussed this. I think Freda is looking for a COLEMAN connection from AL back to VA, but is probably the same COLEMAN line, don't you think? You may want to look at early Mississippi Territory and Early Alabama territory before Alabama became a state in 1819. Some of those Vaughan (Vaughn) families were in Alabama when it became a state. I noticed this because I have a friend who was a Vaughan and I notice things that may be her family. The information which shows where these Vaughans were is in a websitre regarding War of 1812 soldierse in Ancestry.com I think. If you don`t find it there it may have been on Family Treemaker on net.
