I have in my files someone who died in 1799 in Granby Ferry, South Carolina. Can someone please tell me where it is/was? (Which county?) According to the 1987 SC Legislative Manual Granville County, created during the Proprietory Period, extended from the Combahee River to the Savannah River. Other counties created during this period were: Colleton County (From the Stono River to the Combahee River), Berkeley County (From the Awendaw Creek [called Seewee Creek at that time] to the Stono River), & Craven County ( extended from Awendaw Creek with no northern boundary). All counties were abolished by the Royal Period. Hi Eldon, Thank you. This is a big puzzle for me and my family. Our ancestor who received a grant in 1790 has not been found on the REV war records. Neither are his grants found in the deed books of Edgefield. When he left the county he evidently walked off and left the land. He appears on the census, so we know he was there. About 4 years ago a lady who was very knowledgable about SC history was a guest on a talk radio genealogy program. I was able to talk to her and she told me the settlers paid "at least something" for the grants and she named the grants. If I could remember the name of the grants, I might be able to do some research on them. That's my blank wall. Any suggestions? From you or anyone back there in SC???. By the way my ancestor was Hugh Britt, SR. Just for everyone's information, that's Beaufort, the county seat of Beaufort County, SC. And, if my memory serves me well (it does go on vacation once in a while) I recall seeing a map (late 1600s into the 1700s) with the Granville District shown as beginning along the coast of SC, with its western boundary being along the Savannah River, and extending well into the area that became NC - and I believe small portions of both GA and TN. Just wish I could tell you where I saw this on the 'net'. Well, yes Joe, I don't want to do some private eye's work for him under the guise of genealogy, but I think that is not the most likely problem. Another thing that concerns me is the potential for invasion of privacy... like a mother who doesn't want to be found by a long ago adopted child ... or the reverse. BUT... many living cousins have been found on all of my lines and they are the neatest bunch ... ones I would not want to have missed. I get the impression that this sort of thing happens to lots of us... so.. I guess , with a few good experiences, one could be more actively looking for living co-descendants (or whatever the term) ron A downstream son of So. Carolina ...looking for pebbles in the streambed. You are certainly incorrect in this assumption. We search for the living and the dead. In fact, as you find living relatives they often help identify the dead. >From: "Joe DUKE" <jwd@vol.com> >Reply-To: SC-Genealogy-L@rootsweb.com >To: SC-Genealogy-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [SC] Re: SC-Genealogy-D Digest V02 #235 >Date: Sun, 29 Sep 2002 18:56:49 -0400 > > >Hi, all. > >It has been an impression which I have been given, that genealogy students >were studying persons who would no longer be living, but I may be wrong >about that!! > >This is in reply to the person who is seeking 'current' addresses, and I >presume the ones being sought are living persons?!?!?!? > >Curious about this sort of protocol. > >Joe DUKE >----- Original Message ----- >From: <SC-Genealogy-D-request@rootsweb.com> >To: <SC-Genealogy-D@rootsweb.com> >Sent: Sunday, September 29, 2002 10:15 AM >Subject: SC-Genealogy-D Digest V02 #235 > > > > >==== SC-Genealogy Mailing List ==== >Virus warnings are not welcome on this list. >Remember when writing a query, to always put in DATES & LOCATIONS Gene Stackhouse "Inside every old person is a young person wondering what the hell happened." _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com
In My Opinion: Sometimes we have to find a living person to find out about the ones that are no longer living. I like to find living cousins as well as the ones that are no longer wiith us. Some of the best relationships with family members can be made from the ones that we have found through doing genealogy. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joe DUKE" <jwd@vol.com> To: <SC-Genealogy-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 29, 2002 6:56 PM Subject: [SC] Re: SC-Genealogy-D Digest V02 #235 > > Hi, all. > > It has been an impression which I have been given, that genealogy students > were studying persons who would no longer be living, but I may be wrong > about that!! > > This is in reply to the person who is seeking 'current' addresses, and I > presume the ones being sought are living persons?!?!?!? > > Curious about this sort of protocol. > > Joe DUKE > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <SC-Genealogy-D-request@rootsweb.com> > To: <SC-Genealogy-D@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Sunday, September 29, 2002 10:15 AM > Subject: SC-Genealogy-D Digest V02 #235 > > > > > ==== SC-Genealogy Mailing List ==== > Virus warnings are not welcome on this list. > Remember when writing a query, to always put in DATES & LOCATIONS >
Hi, all. It has been an impression which I have been given, that genealogy students were studying persons who would no longer be living, but I may be wrong about that!! This is in reply to the person who is seeking 'current' addresses, and I presume the ones being sought are living persons?!?!?!? Curious about this sort of protocol. Hi Joe Duke, Interesting perception here. I see several responses, but none of us can assume that anyone knows it all, right? I began family research because of my religion, but contacting living persons was the way I was able to collect data enough for me to search for the dead. It is also a common feature of "genealogy" that we get acquainted with those who are no longer with us and sometimes they really "come alive" as we learn their history of family background. I'll take what you find on the dead because our lines intersect, and will correspond with you as long as I am living...smile please. Hi Becky, The USGS site says Granville is another name for Beauford, the county seat of Beauford County, SC. There was a district in the lower part of SC called Granville back in the1700s. The name was changed later. There is a Granville in NC that still goes by tht name. ----- Original Message ----- From: <LdyIris@aol.com> To: <SC-Genealogy-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 29, 2002 2:29 PM Subject: Re: [SC] RE:Granville SC > Thank you so very much for your help.Becky > > > ==== SC-Genealogy Mailing List ==== > Need some help getting started with irc (INTERNET RELAY CHAT)? > Try: http://home.flash.net/~gen4m/ > > >
Hi Joyce, Yes, the grants were usually state grants made by the governor based on Rev War service. I have noticed a number of these made in the 1780s. Hi Folks, I am sorry if you receive more than one copy of this as I am cross posting. I am researching the links between the BURFORD, CLEMENTS, and WADE lines in the 1700-1790 period. Any connection between these surnames is of interest to me. Here are some of the individuals I think may be related: 1. Thomas BURFORD b. 1750 VA (parents unknown) m. Mary WADE b. 1761 VA dau. of Edward (b. 1727 VA) and Mary Clements WADE. 2. Benjamin CLEMENTS son of Benjamin (b. abt. 1680) and Grissell Coleman CLEMENTS. 3. Grissell CLEMENTS b. abt. 1725, parents unknown. (m. a BURFORD?) 4. Mary CLEMENTS b. abt. 1730 VA who m. Edward WADE b. 1727 VA. 5. Peyton CLEMENTS b. abt. 1725, parents unknown (m. a BURFORD?) 6. Edward WADE b. 1760 VA son of Edward (b. 1727) and Mary Clements WADE. Edward b. 1760 m. Nancy Ann (surname unknown but maybe BURFORD). Most of the above people had the other surnames and the other given names in their lines. I am confused as to how they may connect but maybe someone can help me with clearing that up.
