Audrey, Thank you for your email. Yes I have worked in I of W records trying to see if my oldest ancestor came out of that county. But after 40 years of research I am unable to take him back from Orangeburgh/Edgefield Co. SC. There is a lack of material from 1700 to 1790. He is in none of the wills that are on file in the area of I of W or Southampton Counties. That's my blank wall. I have read your messages re Pettypool, P'Pool, Pool because my husband has a Pool line. His grandmother was Manthus Pool, who went back to the Pettypools of Christian/Trigg Counties, KY. The earliest of her line was in Prince George Co, VA. I have not done the research on this family, was just given it. Will have to do some reading to see if any of them went into South Carolina. Are you familiar with the Prince George Pettypools? Joyce Britt Dunning ----- Original Message ----- From: "Audrey E. Hi, BRITT is a name in Isle of Wight County, VA. Male names in the index of wills and administration are: Benjamin, James, John, Jordan and William. Women's names are: Amey, Betsey, Elizabeth, Jane, Mary, Sarah and Susanna. They must have moved on because only Jordan BRITT is mentioned as leaving a record and that was in 1790. Thank you Eldon, redoing my research is exactly what I have been doing. Surprising what I have in my "War Records" folder. Probably 25 years ago I did a very thorough search of Rev Soldiers from S.C. Still didn't find my Hugh Britt, but did find that Richard Britt enlisted to serve in the Rev from Orangeburgh, SC. One of Hugh Britt's grant was there in 1790. So that told me there were Britts there before 1790, which is one of things I have been trying to prove. My quest has been to find where Hugh Britt lived before getting his land grant -- hoping that I might be able to take him back to one of the counties of NC or VA.. Thanks again, you are kind to think of me. Hi Joyce, Sorry for the late response but I have been out of town the last few days. If you are sure he received the grants then I would redo my research. Folks, for just about anything you want to know about early districts, counties as they were formed, etc go to USGENWEB.com Pick out a state that you are interested in (I like to use the map rather than the list), then there is a box in the SC page that says early districts. It is a color map and discriptions of the formation, etc of the districts. Then you can chose the individual counties and each of those has different info. depending on what has been donated. I am researching in Edgefield Co, SC and parts of the early Edgefield Dist was in Granville Co. Someone at a SC ARchives meeting program said that even after counties were formed, that many of the deeds along the area where the lines were drawn, were still referred to by their Early Granville, Colleton, etc Counties because noone really knew where the line was out in the back country. Colleton Co. of old not to be confused with Colleton co. of today. Not only did names change, but locations having that name also changed. Check out the maps. I think you will find them helpful. Saw you post about grants and your question.... About 4 years ago a lady who was very knowledgable about SC history was a guest on a talk radio genealogy program. I was able to talk to her and she told me the settlers paid "at least something" for the grants and she named the grants. If I could remember the name of the grants, I might be able to do some research on them. They may have been referring to 'Warrents' I had some notes that I took at an Edgefield Genealogy Society workshop, but I moved them to use a notebook for something else, and now I cannot find them. Anyway, what I am remembering is that an individual picked out some land and had it surveyed. Then he would get a warrant that proved that he owned the land. Sometimes the Warrents never got filed. [smart move, if filed then taxes are due!] I wish I could be of more help, but at least that is a new word to try. Good luck, Billie Jones Camden, SC tjones@camden.net
