    1. [SC] Alexander INGRAM of "Craven Co" bef. 1760
    2. Randolph Bruce
    3. I descend from the INGRAMs of "Craven Co," who migrated to Virginia ca. 1765, buying land in Augusta Co. in 1767. Augusta subdivided, and Alexander wrote his will in Botetourt Co., 5 Dec 1780. Another subdivision occurred, and the land Alexander bought in Augusta is now in Roanoke Co., VA. The small stream that runs through the land on which he lived he named Cravens Creek. He left land there to his wife and two of his children. But, he also left to his son Wm. "One hundred and fifty Acres of Land on the south fork of Lynches Creek in Craven County" and to his "Son James two hundred Acres on Lynches Creek bounded on Moses and William Ingrams land." Also, "one hundred acres to my daughter Mary on Hanging Rock Creek." I am trying to link Alexander with his parents, siblings, or other roots. Are Moses and William, whose lands "bounded" with James' inherited acreage, his relatives, and if so, of what relationship? Was Alexander born in SC, or did he emigrate there from elsewhere? I descend through Alexander's son James (b. ca 1760); James' son Alexander (b. Dec 09, 1778), Alexander's dau. Jane (b. Feb. 03, 1811); Jane's son Alexander Jennings THOMPSON (b. Nov 23, 1832); Alexander's dau. Martha Ann (b. Oct. 03, 1858); Martha Ann's dau. Lillie Alberta RAKES (b. Sept. 30, 1878) my grandmother. Would love to hear from my Carolina cousins or their descendants, but any help is appreciated. 1. [SC] William Jones, of Barnwell
    2. Helen Harrell
    3. In the census of 1800, there were two men named William Jones, both over age 45, living in Barnwell, some distance apart. One William Jones, over age 45, had a wife Sarah or Sally. I believe that they are the couple who moved to Amite Co MS ca 1808, and left many identifying records there. The other William Jones, sadler, had a wife Rebecca. Next door to him lived younger Jones men: Nathaniel Jones, Josiah Jones, and John Jones. This group lived on lands described as "on Little Saltcatchers," or "on Sykes Creek," or "on Three Runs" Josiah Jones, for whom no Barnwell land sales are recorded, moved to Clarke Co AL by 1808. Any info on William Jones, the saddler, and his wife Rebecca, and on the younger men Josiah, John, and Nathaniel will be greatly appreciated. 3. Hi Debbie, I think it was the one from Laurens, SC. I can pull my PETTYPOOL file if this is important to you. Which line of PETTYPOOL is yours, Debbie? Do you think William POOLE and Elizabeth STOVALL family is also PETTYPOOL? I see no indication they are from the records, but they do seem to be related to William POOLE and Elizabeth TAPLEY's family of Southside VA. 1. [SC] SC land grants for Revolutionary War or War of 1812 service
    2. Dana Haggard
    3. I have a Stephen Cumbo from Edgefield Dist, SC who served under Col. Samuel Hammond in SC in the Revolutionary War. He eventually is granted a pension (in 1827) by the state for this service. I have been told that Stephen Cumbo appears on the Winton tax lists about 1887. What is the best way to learn if Stephen Cumbo receives a land grant for his war service? I have a record for Stephen Cunboo who served in Rowe's Regiment in SC in the War of 1812. I suspect this name should be Cumbo not Cunboo. I'm not certain if these Stephen's are the same man or not. However, Stephen Cumbo receives a land grant about 1819. How do I learn whether this grant is for service in either the Revolutionary War or the War of 1812? Regards, Dana Haggard

    2. Audrey E. Pool
    3. Hi Joyce, I think all of the PETTYPOOLS go back to Henrico and Prince George County, VA and the families of SC are simply descendants. All POOL(E)S are not PETTYPOOL, or vice versa, but some folks seem to think so. I have a huge file of PETTYPOOLS long before computers were available. The John PETTYPOOL of SC the right age to be ours was married to Elender GREEN and a brother married the sister GREEN. To see POOL and RHODES together suggests that we may be PETTYPOOL, after all. Seth PETTYPOOL of SC, Laurens? Greenville Counties? is said to have had 19 sons!! Now, surely many of us could descend from this family. From VA, the PETTYPOOL families migrated to Granville, NC...or some of them did, and like all families, continued to move along, with our without older family members. BRITT: I have a record will send soon that gives the reason I know of the BRITT family of I. O. W., VA. Audrey Thanks for response. 3. Hail to all PETTYPOOL/POOL/P'POOL researcers. These families were from VA to SC. I am surprised no one on the SC Lists haven't mentioned them before. It has been common knowledge many were from Greenville, SC...probably after counties split. My quest is to find out whether we are POOL or PETTYPOOL. A record like the one I posted for William P'POOL suggests we could be P'POOL, but as long as I've studied the PETTYPOOL family, something like 30 years, I find no document that shows our John POOL to be this variant name. Christopher RHODES married Sarah PETTYPOOL (think Sarah), but his brother, Thomas RHODES is said to have married our Lucinda POOL, d/o William POOL and Elizabeth JONES, d/o Gabriel JONES & El;izabeth _________ (of Laurens, SC), granddaugther of John POOL & Mahulda HOLLOWAY. Benjamin RHODES, cousin of Christopher RHODES, married Temperance POOL, d/o John POOL & Mahulda HOLLOWAY of Edgefield, SC. Any serious researcher of the PETTYPOOL family can see why I was interested in the William P'POOL record with Christopher RHODES on same. One of the PETTYPOOL's married a Martha BOSWELL, and I think another Martha was a RAGSDALE. 3. Debbie, M:y my! we've really stirred up something with the Pettypools, P'Pools and Pools. My husband's line comes out of your Seth Jr's brother. He was William Pettypool, married to Sarah Tynes. Information given to me shows your Seth Jr to be b ca 1730 and William's birthdate as ca 1734. I show that they were the sons of Seth Pettypool b ca 1702 and Martha (unknown). Have you found a last name for Martha? I never expected to pick up Pettypool researchers on a SC list, but am happy that I did.
