If anyone has " Index to SC Land Grants, 1784-1800" book, please look for James Farr or John B Hodgens and tell me what if they are in the book. Thanks for your time & trouble, Derrell Oakley Teat
Teresa: Are you talking about William the brother of Hezikiah? William b. 1771 in Halifax Co. VA son of, Daniel and Martha Cockerham. Daniel dies and Martha re-marries to Samuel Pegg/Pigg (sic). Is this the same William? Did they follow Samuel and Martha Cockerham Pegg/Pigg and Hezikiah into NC at the same time? I have a ton of questions. I have a ton of papers and documents. Part of my Story can be read in "Greenville County Chapter Journal Vol. 12 #1 & #2 PP. 10-24, Includes maps" Compliments of Peggy B. Chapman and Frank Cockerham. It is the chapter on Chesley Cockerham and his extended family All of most of these folks appear in that publication. I just want to make sure we are talking about the same William. OH by the way....................this just in I now believe that my Elizabeth the wife of Hezikiah Cockerham (Cockrum) was in fact Elizabeth Pace!! Now I just need to prove this fact. Wm Cockerham born ca. 1777, Halifax CO VA married Charity Jennings, dau. of James Jennings and Charity Burch, by 1801 and probably in Surry CO NC. Charity Burch was the dau. of John Burch JR and Charity Woodson of Cumberland CO VA. Just an FYI. My understanding is that they are not charging. Please see the message below that contains information from the ancestry.com help desk. I know it is confusing but I hope this helps a bit. Take care - Emma The message is below: Ancestry is *not* charging for access to trees or selling trees: access will remain free from both the RootsWeb and Ancestry side as it has always been. What Ancestry is offering for an extra charge is access to a special search engine to search the trees for you. Folks can still search the trees manually or browse the trees for free the same way they always have. Think of it as a research assistant: you can hire someone to help you look for your ancestors, or you can research yourself for free. Hiring a human research assistant doesn't sell them the data being researched, or change the rules so that only they are allowed to look. That's essentially what it is, except that it's computerized, not human.
Since I've never submitted a family tree to Ancestry.com or MyFamily.com, I can't tell you a thing about this but thought some of you might need a heads up. What I received as an fyi appears below. I have no further information. Apologies in advance if you receive this more than once. Victoria ============================================ If you submitted a family tree to Ancestry.com (or MyFamily.com) for free viewing by researchers, that's all about to change. Later this month Ancestry plans to begin charging researchers to view your trees. If you don't want that, you'll have to remove your tree. Go to: http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/trees/owt/ Click on "What's a Preview" Scroll down to #3: Have you already submitted a family tree? Click on "view our checklist" A few lines down you will see: "If for any reason you do not want your tree to be part of the new OneWorldTree service, you must delete it from the Ancestry World Tree database by tentatively May 21, 2004." There are instructions for removing your tree: http://ancestry.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ancestry.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1090 ====================================

Gail, no it doesn´t sound familiar , but Hezikah does. William Cockerham and wife Charity Jennings Cockerham , moved to what is now Haywood CO NC, died in Jackson CO NC ca. 1861. Among their children: Daniel Stewart, James, John Burch, Joel C, Elizabeth and Alfred Newton. Dear Jim: Do you have yet a list of the folks who lived nearby to her or went to church with her in NC yet? Do you have her on the NC US Censuses at all? Make sure that census is not in alpha order, some were later done that way and if it is not in alpha order it should show you who lived in her sorounding area there in NC. Now see if you can locate these folks back in VA somewhere. Use the old VA court records available online if they have not been moved off. I can't recall the website off hand but I'll bet Audrey can or some of the others. Anyway these can be searched page by page using your edit button on your browser to speed things up a bit. However be sure to search for them using all spelling possiblities known this will bring you greater results. This is how we slowly pieced together the puzzle on at least one of my lines that I track. Back in this time frame folks seem to travel together in numbers...............remember the old time saying "there is safty in numbers" and keep in mind the indian's were at war with the white men during some of these times. Plus your everyday robbers and thugs and such. So this is why I believe a lot of them chose to move at the same time. It was also a great help to each other at that time. Say a man's wife died on the trip leaving him with a housefull of young children prehaps a nursing infant..................................thus the wetnurse comes into play. You can see where it would be very handy for the wellfare of the whole group to travel as a group rather than a single family alone. Also keep checking in NC there are records there. Get into the deed books for that time frame and see if you can see any of your clan signing deeds as witnesses, or buying or selling land. YES I know your line is female..............but she could have signed dower rights on something! What ever you do "don't ever give up" Hope this is of some small help to you. Hello Audrey, Yes I saw the Cockerham and Cockrum files that were shown of late. I already have all of this information and have my line back to 1722 to Caroline Co. VA. I need to try and find out if the William that appears on a court case with Daniel in 1722 and prior to Caroline Co. VA being Caroline Co. VA is the same William Cockerham seen in King William Co. VA or not. I think that he is one and the same man. The William Cockerham seen in King William County VA lives nearby to families of SPILLERS. Timeframe about 1702 William seen with Daniel in 1722 Caroline Co. VA. Same Daniel in Halfix Co. VA dies and leaves will names only son Daniel sole heir Daniel Cockerham of Halifax Co. VA. Martha Cockerham is wife has sons among others (Daniel and Hezikiah) Daniel dies Martha remarries to Samuel Pegg/Pigg moves to NC then SC SON Daniel of Daniel and Martha Cockerham marries Judith Cooley and Daniel dies in NC after move. Hezikiah marries Elizabeth and has among others William this man (William b. jan. 24, 1786 married Mary SPILLERS she is daughter of George SPILLERS and this can be traced according to SPILLERS researchers back to the SPILLERS IN King William Co. VA. See what I mean Audrey.....................I think this William is the same William seen with Daniel and they were both being charged with a debt together at the same time in the same case. I think they were Father and son or at the very least brothers...................... Need more out of Caroline Co. VA very early but this is very hard to find I have learned. Do you have anything at all on this? Teresa: Be very careful when working with Cockerham..............they named people over and over again. And with a wife marrying two brothers at two different times and having children by the one who had the same name as the second husbands children it makes for a very big mess!!! I seek to find out who................................................................. Elizabeth ????? Cockrum was d. about 1825 Mother of all of the children of Hezikiah Cockrum of Greenville Dist. SC WAS Elizabeth a Stewart? Was she a Cox? Was she a Croft? Who was she? I do know this....................they show or Hez. shows on the 1786 tax list of Surry Co. NC The bible record that we have shows son William b. Jan. 24, 1786 So I assume that he was born in Surry Co. NC prior to the tax list.......................his Mother was Martha Pegg/Pigg wife of Samuel Pegg/Pigg. Who lived next door to the Pegg/Pigg family in 1780-1785? or nearby to that family? I know the Moses Cockerham who was in Surry CO NC by 1771, came from Lunenburg CO VA. He lived on Reed Creek near the GentryŽs and Brocks. The GentryŽs also moved about the same time to Surry CO NC. Moses lived next door to my Stewart line in Surry CO NC and was assoc. with us. I have no idea on who the William Cockerham was that moved to Buncombe CO NC abt. 1812, but his wife was Betsy Stewart, may have been his 2nd wife. I believe on the 1800 Greenville CO SC census, you will find some CockerhamŽs listed near my Nathaniel and Edward Stewart. Wm. Cockerham was born ca. 1769-1770, he had one daughter with a prior wife named Clarissa born abt 1793 in NC. Clarissa married Robert Rogers in Buncombe CO NC. Wm then married Elizabeth or Betsy Stewart, children: Swain born abt 1802, Moses born abt 1812, Nathaniel, Mary, Jestin, Harriet and William. Wm Cockerham SR died on AveryŽs Creek, Buncombe CO NC in 1841. His last name was also spelled Cockram. Some of this information was incorrect....................we have wills and other court papers that proves they were in Halifax and prior to Halifax they were in Caroline Co. VA prior to that. And I further think that William who was seen in Caroline Co. VA with our Daniel was from King William Co. VA prior to that date of 1722 but so far can't prove that. However living in King William Co. VA at the time I believe this same William Cockrum or Cockerham (seen both ways at times) to have been there were at least three families of SPILLERS............................................. Later on down the line, Daniel Cockrum the son of Daniel Cockrum had a son Hezikiah who had a son William who married a Mary Spillers................this Mary Spillers was the child of George Spillers, I have his will. One of the families in King William Co. VA around 1722 was a George Spillers (much older man of course, but coming down there were more George Spillers in this line and I think that Mary's Father was one of those men.) This gives us a earlier connection with these two names. Any suggestions or comments.................................Thanks a ton for all suggestions the list can offer. I hate you "guys" who have been able to trace your roots back to VA. I have been able to connect to the Revolutionary time in NC but can't seem to find anything that leads to anyone coming there. I can't even find the tie between my Mary Lyles and all the Lyles folks in SC. I keep hoping for a miracle but those don't come to heal this genealogy disease/illness. Jim Runnels in Vero Beach FL.
Also...who did Mary LYLES marry? That will help in locating her. Hi Jim I am pleased that you sent in this post. I've been trying to remember who had Mary LYLES and couldn't find a connection. It is my plan to now work on the LYLES I see in NC books, hoping yours will be part of these families. What NC counties (if you know them) from NC did you find your LYLES family?
