Let me try to give you a short and simple explanation of the old counties in SC. First, pull out a map of current SC and look at it - notice the triangle that is formed from the coast and moves westward. There were only four counties early on, among them was Craven. As the westward expansion began, the four counties were expanded westward in, more or less, straight lines until they ran out at the boundaries of the state. That meant that Craven ran west and included the part of the Upstate w/the Tyger River in it (the Tyger that you see on the maps). It's terribly confusing if you aren't familiar with the history of the state, but maybe this will help you a bit. I hope it will! Gail, yes this is a line I follow. Moses son of old John came to Surry CO NC by 1771, some say his nephew David, son of his deceased brother John JR came with him. I have the 1771, 1772 tax list of Surry CO. Moses Cockerham is the first there. I believe some of this Cockerham line moved to Rutherford CO NC, GA and LA. Wilkes CO NC was created from part of Surry abt 1778, in the next 10 to 12 years part of Wilkes went back to Surry and vice versa. Also, be aware there was a fairly large Cockerham line in Henry, Franklin CO VA. Names included, Abner, Nathaniel, Edward, Cheadle Cockerham. Henry Co VA bordered at one time 1777-1791 on the NC line with Surry CO NC, although this Cockerham line seems to be in present Franklin CO VA and Patrick CO VA. Audrey, my ggggrandfather William Robertson married Elizabeth Bonner and they moved from S.Carolina to Alabama....Lowndes County, but closeby in Wilcox County were many Bonners which I have researched. Benjamin, Demsey, etc. are the main names. I know they didn't have a daughter Elizabeth, but maybe a brother... Gorgeous day here. A storm is sitting out there on the Pacific, waiting to come in. Maybe we will have some showers. Will cut down on all the fires that have started so early. Freda >Have been meaning to tell you that I went to school with some BONNER kids in >AZ. Hi Melanie, Craven County seems to have often been used for areas West and especially North of Berkeley County, even when it was outside the Craven County Official lines. Problem is that the settlers outpaced the county lines and they had to call it some county. Ray >Date: Sun, 09 May 2004 13:40:08 -0500 >From: "M. Thanks Teresa, I'll accept with great thanks anything at all that may help answer some of these old questions that keep popping up over and over again. I also got a reply from a man I do not know about the PACE information that I posted. He made contact off list. I will keep the list posted as to what I learn but will not post his name or information. I figure he contacted me off list for a reason. Charlotte Tucker, First thanks a ton, this man may be the son of Hezikiah Allen Cockrum of Ceder Bluff, AL over in Cherokee Co. And his wife Methela Crouch. I don't know without more study being done on this. Where was this old church, ie state, county etc........................... That would be most helpful I would think if you have that information also. I do understand that you don't research this surname and if you don't have this information I do understand that as well. Thanks in advance and thanks for this post. Gail [email protected] [email protected] BUT ALWAYS embracer and always searching!
Where was Tyger River, Craven Co., SC located? Many years ago someone sent me some info on Land Grants and Memorials for Isaac Young, 1700's, in SC. The location for several of them was Tyger River, Craven County. I can find Tyger River on an old and a current map. I can find Craven County on an old map. However, they do not overlap, as far as I can tell. Any help appreciated.... Melanie
This genealogy poem is my gift to everyone for Mother's Day. I think many of you will be able to relate to it. (My poetry has been published in 47 US States, and several other countries. ) My Poetry Website: http://users.rosenet.net/poetryandroses/ (This remains one of my favorite poems) MY ANCESTOR GRAND MOTHER I search for you yet do not even know your name I press on praying my efforts will prove fruitful the records do not list you or the other women who have lived and loved and laughed, gave birth, and died, the records perpetrate the myth that you were never here but I stand whole and bare my soul and vow to find you as I live I search for you in old records, in churches, at the Embassy, in small dimly lit rooms in the back of obscure libraries and archives and pour over barely readable handwritten ledgers with magnifying glass and flashlight I live on mainly toast these days there isn't time for meals or much sleep feeling as I always do, on the very brink of discovery Perhaps THIS will be the day I find the one seemingly insignificant clue, which will lead me to you although I did not find you listed in the Census Records I am not deterred, you may turn up yet, on an Immigration or Naturalization list somewhere perhaps, or maybe tucked away inside some bank of vital statistics, long forgotten like so many others, your name having become lost over the long years Your name could be lying even now amidst the millions of documents stored and locked away safeguarded in the bowels of a giant warehouse all stopped up from apathetic crowds who have long ceased their visits your precious name, lying just inside a myriad of records packed in tight, packed in to stay never guessing I would come @Sarah Elizabeth Rose [email protected]
Hi Delores, Good to hear from you again and I know your still digging away for your Lewis Holder. Did I ever send you the 1779 Henry CO VA Militia list? On that appear a Lewis and Solomon Holder. We next find them in Surry CO NC. As to the Bledsoe´s, they intermarried with Holder also. John Holder, son of Davis Holder of Pittsylvania CO VA, married Agnes Bledsoe. John Holder is found in Greenville, SC from at least March of 1795, when he and his wife Agnes buy land. My Edward Stewart and Moses Bledsoe witnessed this deed. Edward Stewart´s brother, Nathaniel married Mary Bledsoe, daughter of an unknown Bledsoe. This info. comes from a letter written in the 1870´s buy a man related to Alfred Holder, where he states his grandmother and granfather were Bledsoe and Stewart. It actually goes into more than that, but I´ll spare everyone the boring details. No, I have never heard of this Bledsoe Book. All of my Bledsoe info came from Bob Bledsoe and Banks McLauren. Banks wrote several boks on the Bledsoe´s and he died last year. I would however be very interested in this Bledsoe book if you think it would help me. My Robert Lang was in S. C. as early as 1737. I am trying to determine where he came from. Was he the same Robert Lang, Trader in NC? From the Early Clarks of Carolina Edward Clark Jr's immediate neighbors included many of the so called Chickasaw Indian Traders, e.g. Robert Lang, John Pace, Thomas Whitmell, etc. Who settled near Occoneechee Neck between 1713 and 1725. These traders would take Indian trail south in the late fall to the Chickasaw and Cherokee winter camps along the bluffs of the Broad River. Both Gibsons were part of the small community of Indian traders known as the "Chickasaw Traders" who between 1710 and 1730, settled along the main north/south Indian trail near where if forded the Morattock (later Roanoke) River, and area the traders named Occoneechee Neck. Chowan and Bertie Precinct land records establish that Gideon Gibson acquired land from William Maule and Robert Lang (an Indian trader) in 1721 and 1722 along the south shore of the Roanoke River adjacent to Quankey Creek. From "THE EXPANSION OF SOUTH CAROLINA" 1729-1765 by Robert L. Meriwether, 1940 Between 1736 and 1741 several English names are to be found among the Saxa Gotha plats: Robert Lang senior and junior, William Baker, Thomas Berry, Richard Myrick, and John Gibson had surveys near Savannah Hunt Creek. PAGE 55 Philip Raiford, Junior and James Leslie were also on Broad River by 1756. Samuel Lines went to the lower Saluda while Robert Lang senior and junior, or two men of their name, went one to the upper Saluda, the other to Crims Creek, a branch of Broad. PAGE 62 Chapter X This troop (a troop of rangers)......was provided for by the assembly in April of 1748 because of the capture of George Haig, the murder of a trader in the Cherokees, and other threats of an Indian outbreak......Within two days after receiving Glen's letter Francis (James Francis) enlisted twelve men, "All living in Saludy Settlements".. Of the twelve John Turk, Robert Lang, Charles Banks, David Ball, John Reed, and Henry Foster received warrants in the Saluda valley between 1749 and 1755,......Francis begged the governor to allow him to enlist two more white men in place of the Indians,(each troop had two friendly Indians) and gave a hint of the occupation of his neighbors by saying that "As for their usefulness in hunting provision...I question whether e'er an Indian on the main can compare with some of the men in listed, not only in killing provisions or the like but any other property that an Indian is adapted to," PAGE 119 Charles Banks was also from the northward and formerly in the Cherokee trade. Robert Lang and his father had land in Saxa Gotha by 1740 and at some time one or both of them probably were also traders. PAGE 120 Chapter XI Robert Lang in 1757 asked the Commons House to pay him twenty pounds for the plundering of cattle and goods, and the burning of his house by the Cherokees.
