    3. Lisa, The first Robert´s I find in Surry CO NC wwre James and John Robert´s listed together with 5 polls(3 slaves) on the 1774 tithables. Did any of your Robert´s family intermarry with the HOLDER family and were they in Greenville, SC? SMITH is always a tough name to search, their were a few lines in Surry CO NC. The only one I have followed, is the Charles Smith Anne Mallory line out of Orange CO VA. They intermarried with my SNOW and TUCKER lines in Surry CO NC. 1. Graham family in Connecticut, Mecklenburg, NC and York County, SC
    2. Hi, I am trying to get further back on my Grahams, also. I need documentation. According to Mrs. W. S. Elrod, my Grahams are supposedly descended from Jean ? Graham and her husband...supposedly a Rev. Graham. There is a book at the Richland Public Library on the descendants of Rev. John Graham leading one to believe that my ancestor was this Rev. John Graham. Taken from Allied Family, Graham, Ancestry of Nancy Graham Williams, by Mrs. W. S. Elrod. " Mrs. Jean Graham (widow of Rev. Graham) settled on Turkey Creek in that part of Mecklenburg County, N. C. that later became York County, S.C. It was here her will was filed and recorded in 1792. The will was dated Aug. 16, 1790. "The old Graham homeplace, containing 300 A. was located on Turkey Creek in York County, S.C. Jean Graham did not leave her sons any of her estate as indications are that they were quite 'well to do' and did not need it... "... Jeremiah Williams (Capt.) who married Nancy Graham after the revolutionary war was a teacher and minister. Nancy's mother's will ... indicates... she bequeathed to Nancy the Rev. Graham's sermon book (probably for Nancy's husband to use.) "The will of Jeane Graham states: 'I, Jean Graham, of County of York, State of South Carolina, names daughter, Margaret, all my tract of land in said County, containing 289 A. adjoining John Cornachan, Turkey Creek; the daughter Nancy, one sermon....books etc. I appoint my daughter, Margaret Templeton and friend, Hugh Barry (See Hugh Barry) executors. Signed" Jean Graham. Wtns: James Willson, George Templeton, and William Templeton **note the Templeton name...they were related to the Davidsons. Recorded April 30, 1792 in Will Book A-12, pg. 69, Case 56, File 160." "The grandchildren of Rev. John and & Mrs. Jeane Graham migrated to many States after the Revolutionary War. Two of Jean's sons served in the Rev. War, and her grandson was killed near Bamberg by the Tories." This is where I am lost. I trying to connect my Grahams in Newberry County to supposedly Jean's son, George, and to connect Jean to the first Rev. John Graham who preached in Connecticut. There are papers of his and his son John, also a preacher in Connecticut. They can be found in the library at William L. Clements Library at The University of Michigan . *****I wish I could have someone look at those papers and tell me more about the first Rev. John Graham born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1694. Did he marry twice and if so who was his second wife and who were all his children and which mother did they belong to ? This would help me tremendously to figure out where Jean came from and what her maiden name was. I have some guesses..but that is all they are. I have looked up all people who had dealings with her will and land, but haven't found anything substantial. My other brick wall is more about her son George? I can find some information that begins with him and then jumps to his brother telling where the brother is buried...but nothing else on George. I know this George served in the Revolutionary War and his age is appropriate for my George. My George died in Newberry...there are Estate Records in Newberry on George Graham, Box 356, Pkg. 29 dated 1791. It lists his children thus giving me pretty direct proof of my line. (my ancestor was George's son Jesse.) One thing that has really bothered me is that Jesse had a brother named James. In Newberry, there is a book about the family of James stating he was born in England. I know that my James was this James because my Great Grandaddy George Tillman Graham born August 17, 1859 and James's son, John Hillard Graham born July 04, 1814 died Jan. 30, 1878 wrote to each other and called each other cousins. I have copies of the letters. The Graham Family Papers contain a miscellaneous assortment of letters, documents, and diaries relating to John Graham, Sr. and Jr., and Sylvester Graham. John Graham, Sr., is represented by a religious copybook, begun ca.1724, three printed items, two manuscript biographies, and 12 letters between him and his son, John, Jr., written during the French and Indian War. I am pretty sure that his son John Graham, Jr.'s sons, Sylvester and Narcissus Graham came to South Carolina. (Sylvester Graham was raised by a succession of relatives, working as a farm hand, clerk and teacher before chronic ill health led him to choose the ministry as a less stressful profession. Graham preached under the auspices of the Presbytery of Newark in New Jersey during the early 1830's, during which time he began to propound his distinctive, all-encompasing reformist ideas on diet and health. Grahamism stressed the benefit of complete abstention from alcohol, tobacco and meat and advocated eating coarse-grained bread more than 12 hours old, fruits and vegetables. Beyond diet, he recommended hard mattresses, open bedroom windows, chastity, cold showers, loose clothing, pure water and vigorous exercise. He became a well known, if controversial, lecturer on not only the Grahamite philosophy, but physiology and anatomy and the position of the Bible on wine and meat, and he directed a special series of lectures toward African-Americans. The most widely read among his many publications were his Treatise on Bread and Bread-Making (1837) and the journal he edited, the Graham Journal of Health and Longevity (1837-39). Grahamism, the fad of the 1830's, waned in the 1840's, and Graham devoted himself increasingly to his Biblical lectures. His health declined steadily, and he died in Northampton, Mass., after a round of failed Grahamite cures. ...hence the Graham cracker.) If they came, then it is logical other relatives might have came. From George in Newberry on down to me, I am fairly certain except for a few things that need a little more work done on them. I plan to dig deeper into the Mecklenburg Grahams and York District Grahams. If anyone is working on these Grahams, please let's share this information. I looked for your John Graham, but didn't find anything but he and his wife. Do you have their children? He is probably one of the many grandchildren of the originial Rev. John Graham. I will definitely keep you in mind if I run across his line. If you would be so kind to share your John's children and their dates, I would be very pleased. Hope that some of the information above will be of help to you. Thanks for responding, Hope

    1. Bell Boone Bledsoe obit, niece of the late D. A. G. Ouzts of Greenwood.
    2. Lee and Billie Jones
    3. Here's a confusing one. Name of husband doesn't seem to fit, so don't know if there are two Bell Boones or not. The following obituary was transcribed from the clipping in the Scrapbook of Ella Ruth Hazel Trotter. Mrs. Bell B. Bledsoe - Saluda, SC Aug. 18 [no year or name of newspaper with the clipping] Mrs. Bell Bonne Bledsoe, 68, of the Hickory Grove Section, ided in a Greenwood Hospital at 2 pm today. She had been in declining health for the past several years. She was a member of Rocky Creek Baptist Church. Funeral Services will be held at Bethel Methdodist Church on the Johnson highway Thursday at 4:30 pm.... Burial will be in the church cem. Ramey Funeral Home in charge. Besides her husband Benjamin R. Bledsoe, five daughters and one son survive. they are: Mrs. Rowan Bowers and Ben L. Bledsoe, both of Columbia [SC]; Mrs. William P. Brennan, Charlotte [NC]; Mrs. Emmett C. Bennett, Atlanta [GA]; Mrs. Malcolm R. Banks and Mrs. Scott Allen, both of Saluda [SC]; one sister, Mrs. E. L. Carpenter, Augusta, Ga. and 11 grandchildren. Mrs. Bledsoe was a niece of the late D. A. G. Ouzts of Greenwood. The cem. records for Bethel Methodist do not include any Bledsoes. Since I have no cem. record, I cannot figure out the date of the obit. HOWEVER: The following is listed in the Bethlehem Methodist Church Cem. Records. Bledsoe, [Martha (Mattie)] Belle BOONE May 27 1886 - Aug 18 1954 This cem. record has her buried beside Bledsoe, Berryman R. [Russell] Sep 6 1881 - Jul 23 1973 rather than a Benjamin R. Bledsoe??? What is your take from this? Did the cemetery transcribers get name wrong. Seems like his children would have given the info. for the obit and would know their father's name??? Billie

    3. Gail, yes this is a line I follow. Moses son of old John came to Surry CO NC by 1771, some say his nephew David, son of his deceased brother John JR came with him. I have the 1771, 1772 tax list of Surry CO. Moses Cockerham is the first there. I believe some of this Cockerham line moved to Rutherford CO NC, GA and LA. Wilkes CO NC was created from part of Surry abt 1778, in the next 10 to 12 years part of Wilkes went back to Surry and vice versa. Also, be aware there was a fairly large Cockerham line in Henry, Franklin CO VA. Names included, Abner, Nathaniel, Edward, Cheadle Cockerham. Henry Co VA bordered at one time 1777-1791 on the NC line with Surry CO NC, although this Cockerham line seems to be in present Franklin CO VA and Patrick CO VA. Teresa Teresa, Cheadle Cockerham connects into Moses! Cheadle Cockerham and Daniel #1 were brothers'. We have proven that via old VA Ct. Order Books (Online). Then when Daniel #1 married he named a son Cheadle only it was spelled a bit different by that time as Chesley. This Chesley grew up and married Margaret (Peggy) Martin. Peggy B. Chapman named the article that her and Frank wrote and published after *****This man***** This man also named a son Daniel b. Bet. 1782 - 1884 as best we could come to a date for this one. Then this Daniel is the one who married Elizabeth Roberts!! They married as best we could guess about 1820 and did have the following children: Allen C. Cockerham Cothran (the C could therefore stand for Cheadle or Chesley either one after his Grandfathers') Richard Cockerham Cothran Lydia Cockerham Cothran *****NOTE Disregaurd the use of COCKERHAM and aslo that of COTHRAN these were used in order to make the program perform correctly and do what we needed it to do************** They do belong with this family but I will not even guess as to the correct spelling that they were at this time using. I grew up using Cothran myself as did my Father and his Father before him. And my GreatGrandfather is buried underneath a tombstone that reads the same way! Teresa, I do believe this is the same folks that you were looking for. My Grandmother Cothran told me that there were some Roberts in our family she just never explained if it were the Cothran's or the Entriken's that she was talking about. 1. TROTTER, HAZEL, BLEDSOE, TIMMERMAN, etc
    2. Lee and Billie Jones
    3. Some excitiing new info. has come to me by chance this week. I got an email message a couple of weeks ago from Betty Trotter whose husband Randy's family is from the Saluda Co. area. She and her husband were going to be in SC for a visit and she wanted to put a face to the emailer. We have exchanged Trotter info. as the Joseph Trotter line marries into the Charles Carter and Hezekiah Gentry line that is mine, so I have worked a bit on them. We cannot connect the two Trotter lines yet, however. Anyway, we met here at the Camden Archives Tuesday and enjoyed visiting with one another. (Who else but family researchers can meet complete strangers and spend 5 hours constantly talking about dead folks and have fun!) Betty mentioned a scrapbook that her husbands grandmother, Edna Ruth HAZEL Trotter, had kept of old family pictures and obits. My comment was that one of my daughters-in-law was a desc. of the Hazels of that area, going back to Darling Hazel b. ca Abt. 1789 married Margaret Bland. Well.... lo and behold, that is her husband's Hazel line too. And the scrapbook had Julie's g-grandparents and gg-grandparents' obit in it, and a picture of her grandmother with all her siblings. It is truely a small world!! So Betty came back to Camden on Tuesday and brought the scrapbook and allowed me to copy the pages. I have found and expanded several lines already and have only transcribed one page of the obits from the scrapbook. Betty has given me permission to post the information that I transcribe onto the lists, and she is generously donating a copy to the Tomkins Library for future researchers. Her copy is much better than mine, as she made color copies that shows the pictures, in the sepia tone that is much clearer than my black & white copy of a copy. We both hope that this information will help many of you. And that you will post to the list any information that you might have on these folks. Each time I post, I will give the source of the info. and certain limitations. For instance, the compiler of the scrapbook did not write down the date nor the name of the newspaper from which the obit was taken. A couple give the name the "Saluda Standard", and at least one so far has said special to The State (out of Columbia). I don't know anything about the Saluda Standard. The source documentation that I am using is: "Scrapbook of pictures and obits kept by Ella Ruth Hazel Trotter 1905 - 1963, d/o John Henry & Jamesanna Timmerman Hazel" Then, in the comments section of my source, I add the actual item, such as obit of Mrs. Julia Hazel Simmons or obit of John R. Trotter..... I am searching cem. records and death cert. for dates on these folks since the dates are not written on the clippings. Some I may not have, and Betty might not have found either, so if anyone knows them, please share. I am so excited about this info, especially since it includes information on my daughter-in-law's family. However, Julie was very grateful to hear that as far as I can tell, she has no direct family connections to her husband! So... be on the lookout. I am having to do this much slower than I want to, as I am trying to put the death cert. with them, and I cannot get down to do those as often as I would like. I hope noone will mind all the cross posting, as I need to include several different areas for research purposes. Billie Jones Camden, SC [email protected]

    3. Geri, I looked for your ROLAND HUGH STANLEY at the York County Courthouse but did not find him. They only keep so many years though. Have you tried the SC Archives at this link http://www.scdhec.net/vr/index.htm . I think you can send away for records from them. Sorry I could find him for you. Good Luck with your search. I'm not sure about the county. People from NC went to York, SC to get married since there was no waiting period. Does that mean a town named York or is it York Co. or one and the same? I believe it was pretty close to the NC state line. I'm searching for marriages for ROLAND HUGH STANLEY, DOB- 07-17-1916. He was from Davie Co, Mocksville, NC. He died 1985, NC. He was actually married 5 times and I have NC records for 3 marriages!! The ones I need were early 1940's. 3. Sorry about the posting of the full org. message but I wish very much to find out was this church located by chance in Murrary Co. GA??? If so I know who this man was. See: Misc. Deeds, Greenville Deeds N-338 (1809) and N-20 (1822) and Murray County GA Deed E-51 (1839), William Cockram was easier to trace thorough his land records than other Cockrams because he was a Baptist minister and therefore literate. This Characteristic of signing was helpful in his identification in Greenville Deeds and Murray County Georgia Deeds. By 1820 this is not the William showing on the US Census of Greenville even though there were two of them showing that year. He may have already moved to GA but was not found for that year in that state. By Greenville Deed N-20 dated March 8, 1822 he sold 100a of his Jameson Mill Creek tract. Does this not sound like this same man below in this earlier post? If perhaps this Mulberry Church was in deed located in Murrary Co. GA I think these men are really one and the same. And I can tell everyone on this list more if I know the answer to where this church was located?? Anyone??? I hastily add that I do not research the surname Cochran. Charlotte Tucker The Rev. William L. Cochran, the pastor of the church during the year of 1853-54 was born in South Carolina during the year of 1805. The oldest female in his family during the census of 1860 was Martha Emeline, born in 1826. He was, perhaps at the time, a widower and Martha was his daughter. His other children were Lucinda, born 1834; Samuel, born 1836; Jesse, born 1838, Eliza, born 1840; John, born 1842; Henry, born 1846 and Charles, born in 1848. Most of his children were members of the church. It appears that he lived in the community and participated in its life. It was his lot to again become pastor of the church in the immediate years ahead. . William L. Cochran served Mulberry Church as its pastor for the second time, this time being the years of 1860,1861, and 1862. SOURCE: Ulysses H. Abrams, A History of Mulberry Baptist Church 1818-1968: 34,36.
