The following obit was on the same page in the scrapbook as the Bethelehem News that is placed in a separate post. It is the obit of the father of the Elizabeth Shaw who wrote the article for the paper. It may have been from a different edition of the paper. The cem. date for the death of Joe L. Shaw gives the date Jan 17, 1957. On the afternoon of Jan. 17, as the evening sun was setting at 5:30, Mr. Joe L. Shaw passed to his eternal reward following a 4 mo. illness. There were many hearts saddened over his goig for he was greatly beloved by all who knew him. He was patient, kind, and gentle. He was born Dec. 2, 1882, the son of the late Steve and Lizzie Riley Shaw. he was 74 years of age. He had lived in Saluda Co. all his life and in the Bethlehem section all of his married life except or 10 years in the Good Hope Section. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lydia Kemp Shaw and 2 daughters, Miss Elizabeth Shaw and Mrs. Lester Allen, and one grandson, Joe Lester (Allen) all of Johnston. Also surviving are 2 brothers, Frank and June Shaw and three sisters, Mrs. Smith Rushton, Mrs. Holly Hipp, and Mrs. Mott Yarborough, all of Saluda. He was a faithful member of Bethlehem Methodist Church, having served once for 25 years on the board of stewards. he loved all of his pastors. He was engaged in farming all of his life. He was a man who loved his work. Mr. Shaw stood for everything which was high and holy and for the betterment of the community. Everyone respected him as a citizen of the highest merit. he will be freatly missed in many ways. He loved hom and was always devoted to his family. He was also interested in State and National affairs..... The service was hel at Bethlehem Church Friday afternoon, Jam 18 at 3 o"clock by his pastor J. F. Williamson, assisted by Rev. Tommy Gibbons of Nichols, a former pastor, and Rev. J. G. Hipp of Holly Hill, a nephew...... Interment was in Bethlehem Church Cem... Active pallbearers were his nephews Preston Rushton, Shaw Rushton, John Andres Shaw, Robert Shaw, Manning Shaw and Willie Shaw. ----------------------------------- I worked on cem. records to see if I could identify any of the above folks and get dates for the family outline. These are the ones I found: Bethlehem Methodist Church cem, Saluda Co, records show the following: Shaw, Joe L. Hickory Grove Advent Church cem. records [brackets are comments of HC Ouzts] Shaw, Junius William [June] Feb 21 1890 - Apr 15 1966 [s/o Elizabeth (Lizzie) RILEY & Stephen Franklin Shaw] [m. Sophia COLEMAN] I have been working on connecting the above info. to the Hazel and Trotter lines about whom the scrapbook is focused. It seems that Matilda Louisa Edwards who married John Bland Hazel, of the Hazel family of this Bethlehem Community area (April 06, 1858-July 06, 1936) names a sister Julia Shaw of Saluda. And this seems to be the Julia Edwards Shaw who is buried at Travis Park Cem. per cem. Records: Shaw, Julia [M.] EDWARDS Feb 28 1863 Feb 4 1951 Edwards, [Benjamin Joseph] B. J. Nov 1 1850 Nov 6 1910 Edwards, John Crowder May 28 1854 Oct 24 1904 Edwards, William Suddath May 31 1884 Oct 30 1902 Edwards, Joe Ben Oct 1909 Jan 5 1913 Looks like this may be the connection to the Hazels, thru the Edwards family. HC Ouzts states that Julia Edwards is the 2nd wife of Joseph L. Shaw. And the dates match those of the Benjamin Edwards family who seems to be the father of both Matilda Edwards Hazel and Julia Edwards Shaw. After searching the census records, I can identify find the two sisters and also the brother Benjamin Joseph who is buried next to Julia above. using all the various census records we can get the names. Anyway, there does not seem to be blood kin here with the Hazels, and after I entered the folks into my computer one Steven Franklin Shaw is the son-in-law of Benjamin Edwards & wife Julia A. who is the father of Matilda Edwards who married John Bland Hazel. So Is Steve Shaw who married Lizzie Riley in the obit of Joe L. Shaw, the Same as the Stephen Franklin Shaw who married 2nd Julia Edwards??? I am assuming so.... but will welcome any correction to this assumption. So from the obit, the dates and info. from cemetery and census records, and the assumption that this is the Same Steve Shaw listed as husband of Julia Edwards in the obit of Mrs. John Bland (Matilda Edwards) Hazel in 1936, I have created the following outline of the family: Descendants of Stephen Franklin Shaw 1 Stephen Franklin SHAW b: December 17, 1851 d: January 17, 1920 Burial: Butler Methodist Cem, Saluda Co, SC . +Elizabeth S. Hi fellow researches: Last month we spent two weeks researching my father's lines from Columbia, SC to Davisboro, GA and most areas between. We took with us our laptop completed with the latest data base, a digital video and still cameras, and a digital voice recorder. Our Olympus C-750 still camera and Sony IC voice recorder were EXTERMLY valuable tools. Everywhere we got access to courthouse vaulted documents (originals) because we were not trying to photocopy these pages. On the camera auto function and with the general lighting in these places, no flash was necessary. The files this camera creates can be enlarged, brightened, sharpen, etc. We took over 1300 shots and over 13 hours of voice taping all of which will be included in our software data base when done. We also, found these tools to be time savers and cost savers verse printing off microfilm at what ever the copy costs are. As with any digital file, sending on the internet for sharing is direct. Please make any responses to the lists. I do not know any more about these folks. I am just the messanger. I don't believe they connect to the Hazel-Trotter family I am working on, but are known thru their ministry. Billie Jones Camden, SC [email protected] From the Scrapbook of pictures and obits kept by Ella Ruth Hazel Trotter (1905-1963), d/o John Henry & Jamesanna Timmerman Hazel, (Copy provided by Betty Trotter, May 2004), two clippings on the Henry Belle White family. Picture and announcement of 50th wedding anniversary. From Columbia, SC, Sunday Feb. 17, 1946 paper. The Rev. and Mrs. Henry Belle White, who celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversay Dec. 25 at their home near Saluda. Over 100 guests called. Mrs. White, the former Ardea Attaway was married to the Rev. Mr. White, Dec. 25, 1895. At the time of his marriage Mrs. White was not a minister, having been ordained at the age of 36. Before joining the ministry he was twice elected treasurer of the county. Courthouse officials and business places generally closed and were present at the ordination services in old Red Bank church, where the couple had been married. He has had continuous work and has served Rocky Creek Baptist church near the Saluda Edgefield Co. line for 28 yhears, and Steven Creek church in edgefield Co. for 30 years. The Rev. & Mrs. White are the parents of John H. White of Florence, R. By todays standards, that is strange. I guess if he was splitting his time between the two church and traveled to them, possibly wives did not travel with their husbands.]

Sorry to be so long in a response to Gail Moore. Gail wanted to know where the Mulberry Baptist Church was located. Ulysses H. Abrams in his book "The History of Mulberry Baptist Church The Early Community and The Church" states the church was organized in Alabama sometime during the year 1818. The members came from "east central Georgia, known as the Edgefield District of South Carolina". Some of the older members were from "...Pennsylvania and Maryland". According to Mr. Abrams, the church was in Bibb County Alabama for 50 years until the county boundary changed and the community then became a part of Chilton Co AL in 1868. The copy of Mr. Abrams book I used is in the Samford University's Special Collection in Birmingham, AL. It will not circulate. I sincerely hope this will help ... Teresa, which TUCKER line do you have -- does it go back to ROBERT TUCKER who arrive in Colonies in the early 1600's ??? Does your SNOW go to SALLY SNOW, married Zelotes Tucker, 13 April 1803???? I have nothing more on Sally Snow but do have lots on Tucker line from Robert. There is a NICHOLAS SNOW that came over on the "ANN" but I have not been able to connect him to Sally. Nicholas founded Eastham, Mass.
