My apologies to the list, but I have been unable to find my original notes for the following transcripion regarding the Terry surname of Edgefield. Because of the recent discussion regarding the Terry surname, I want to submit them anyway for those of you who may be interested in the clues provided AND might be able to go to the courthouse in Edgefield and/or Bibb County, AL, and locate the records. Hello, I have a new email address at [email protected]
The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2004 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. Information about the newsletter is available at http://www.eogn.com. - Finding a Genealogy Society This newsletter and many other genealogy publications often refer to "your local genealogy society." The question is: how do you find such a society? Or, how do you find such a society in another part of the country where your ancestors lived? After all, if you live in Colorado but are looking for ancestors in Kentucky, you need to find the resources held by the Kentucky society. Then again, you may need to find a national society that specializes in specific ethnic groups, such as French-Canadian, Italian, Polish, or Quaker ancestry. Of course, your local society can help immensely with research techniques and local resources. The FGS Society Hall Online can help you locate all of the above organizations. The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) is a non-profit organization comprised of hundreds of genealogical and historical societies, family associations, and libraries, with a combined membership of over 500,000 members. FGS is actively involved in efforts to protect societies, promote education to help societies and their officers work more effectively, facilitate and coordinate society activities, and monitor events significant to the genealogical community. The Federation is the collective voice for genealogists at the national level. Its member societies number over 550 today. You can learn more about FGS at their website at http://www.fgs.org. MyFamily.com and Ancestry.com are providing support to the Federation of Genealogical Societies in the form of hosting Ancestry/FGS Society Hall, an online directory of information about member genealogical societies. Located at http://www.familyhistory.com/societyhall, the FGS Society Hall site provides you the ability to search for genealogical societies by society name or keyword, and/or by city, state, and/or ZIP code. The search results will include all member societies that maintain a presence in the directory. If you are looking for new resources, take a look at http://www.familyhistory.com/societyhall.

Audrey, I have two KING's and one WARD who married into my RUNNELS line. Benajah and John Jackson married sisters Julia Ann and Mary; Siby WARD married Calhoun T, all children of David and Mary (LYLES) RUNNELS. Perhaps these families made their way together during the NC/SC/GA areas transit. It might help me to locate David's parents origin (a far stretch, I know, but at this point I will grasp at any straw). Jim

Audrey, Thank you for the information on the early Terry's from the Terry's Tracings. Some of this information is discussed on the Terry Family Genforum. Does this Rose Caudle Terry still send out quarterlies? Do you have an address for her? I am hoping to touch base with someone working this line in the early to mid- 1800's. My ancestor, Martha..who married Britton Patrick, and who was possibly a Terry before marriage, was born 1815, NC, just across the border with Chesterfield & Marlboro Co. They spent the first part of their married life in Chesterfield, and then moved into Marlboro Co., which is where they died and are buried. I am also seeing both the Patricks and Terrys mentioned with Cole family members. And the Wallace name is used in conjunction with other family names. Thanks for your input. Joanne [email protected]
Does anyone have info about James Grice whose will is given below? Could this be James Grice who married "Luarky" Jackson. Was "Luarky" a nickname for Mary? Luaarky had a daughter Jane who married a Fladger. Thomas Evans witnessed this will for James Grice. Is that the Thomas Evans, who is the son of Edith Godbold and Nathaniel Evans? Here is my interest in a TERRY family. Audrey "3 Dec 1822. Appraisal of estate of William P'POOL, dec'd by John HUTCHESON, John DEEN and Geo MOSLEY. 18 dec 1822. estate sale. Elizabeth POOL, Adm." This record would indicate we are PETTYPOOL, not POOL, but do not have proof. Explanation: 1. Temperance POOL, d/o John POOL & Mahulda HOLLOWAY m. Benjamin RHODES, cousin of Christopher RHODES in record above. 2. Ray's matriarchal line m. a STARNES. 3. According to Bessie (POOL) LAMB's book of Laurens Co, NC, there were both TERRY and BERRY family connections; sons named Terry POOL and Berry POOL. Am pretty sure this was PETTYPOOL, not POOL. Do any of your Terrys have a link to the Cole family by any chance? My Britton Patrick and his wife, Martha..(Terry?) had a funeral first in their home for a Mary Cole back in 1856 in Chesterfield Co., and buried this Mary Cole at St. David's church there in Cheraw,SC It made me wonder if this woman was a sister to Martha. I'm going to note a little of what Rose put together in Terry's Tracings... Some of the Southern TERRY's include: If you've ever worked Southside VA to the Carolinas, most of you will see the following names. Hi, I haven't really researched the CAPPS family other than what I see along the migration trails from VA to the Carolinas. Matthew CAPPS is in Chowan Precinct, NC, deeds, just after 1700...early. There are also KINGS and WARDS there and CAPPS is on at least one deed with Henry KING. Wasn't there a man by the name of BULL who was Gov. or SC? I don't see COOKSEY in my library, but haven't looked very hard. Will keep you in mind as I watch for records of families that went to SC.
