In trying to figure out more information about Frances Bullock, d/o David Cunningham Bullock and Artemesia Burnett, who is proported to have married a Whatley, I transcribed the following census records that jut don't seem to work, or prove what I have wrong. I am looking for this Fannie: 1 Frances 'Fannie' E. BULLOCK b: Abt. 1856 . +WHATLEY But I am not sure if she was a Whatley by marriage or by birth. I may be confusing two individuals ? 1- There is a Frances E. Whatley buried in Bullock-Whatley Cem. with dates that match this birthdate - Fannie E. Whatley, b. Jun 26 1856 d. Oct 6 1874 HC Ouzts identifies her as d/o Frances Parthenia BULLOCK & Perender Andrew (Perry) Whatley, and I confirmed a Frances with the 1860 census below. The following was sent by Jack F Campbell <[email protected]>, April, 2004. Seems to be a letter from Becky, mother of Gillie.... On December 23, 1791, as she had promised, Becky delivered our second baby girl. We named her Gillianna, and it didn't take long before the boys shortened that name to Gillie. They say that in the spring a man's fancy turns to love. I think that's exactly what happened to old man William Forrest's son, William Jr. He was known in these parts as Buck. I don't think a Sunday went by in the spring and summer of 1814 that he wasn't plopped out on our west porch making moon eyes at Gillie. Buck was twenty, a little pudgy, had a head full of bushy, red hair and a face full of freckles. Becky surprised me on one of those Sunday afternoons when she turned to me with a serious look on her face and said, "For the life of me, I can't see what Gillie sees in that boy. He's nice and polite enough, but I swear, he's got to be the ugliest boy in South Ca'lina." I replied, "Becky, you can't really mean that; from the looks of things he's probably gonna be our next son-in-law." I was right. Gillie and Buck were married at our house on September 23, 1814. We now have eight wonderful grandchildren. Harris and his wife, Mary, have a son, Warren, born in 1808, and a daughter, Nancy, born in 1810. Wiley and Amy Bledsoe Goodwin have a daughter, Caroline, born in 1808. Gillie and Buck Forrest have a boy, Jefferson, born in December, 1815, and a boy, Elza, born in September, 1816, both of 'em redheaded as a peckerwood. Of course, William and Mary have Harriet, Jack, and Simpson. Becky and all the women folk were in the process of setting the tables on the west porch when we saw two more carriages crossing the creek. Both were loaded with younguns. In the first one was Gillie and Buck Forrest. They now have four children, Jeff, Elza, Ellen, and Rebecca, six months. Little Rebecca was dead to the world when they got here, but that didn't keep Becky from taking her and sitting down to rock and talk baby talk to her newest namesake. In the next carriage was Charity and Dempsey Hatcher, with their children, Jackson, Elizabeth, Rebecca and Little Dempsey. The only families that wouldn't consider moving were those of Tom Wright and Buck Forrest. Tom's folks were in their late seventies, and he said he just couldn't leave them right now. Same thing with Buck. They didn't say it this way, but I knew they didn't want to leave all the land they would get when their folks died. Frances and Gillie will be broken hearted when they find out. Billie

Caver, Jr. February 1, 1840: Died, at his residence, on Bray's Bayou, Harris County, Texas, on the 27th December, Doctor P.W. ROSE, formerly of St. Louis, Missouri. Married, on Thursday evening, 30th ultimo, at the residence of Mr. Asa BRIGHAM, in this city, by Chief Justice Thomas J. RUSK, Mr. Oliver JONES, Senator from Austin County, to Mrs. Mary McINTYRE, of this city. February 12, 1840: Mr. BARROW, a young man, while assisting in the survey of the Texas boundary line, was killed by accidental discharge of his gun. April 15, 1840: Died, on Friday, 11 instant, near this city, Mr. William BARTON, aged 58 years. Mr. BARTON was a native of South Carolina, and moved to the state of Alabama during the wars with the Indians in 1816 and 1817. From that state he came to Texas. His whole life has been spent upon the frontier, and he has been aptly syled the Daniel Boone of Texas. He has seen many hair breadth escapes and a narrative of his life would form a very interesting biography. He removed to the place where he died about three years ago. It was then twelve miles above the highest settlers on the east of the Colorado, and on the west there was not another person for more than forty miles. The Indians frequently surrounded his house and have taken a few shtos at him; he has always contended that he should never be murdered by an Indian. In his manners he was frank and confiding, and died not only lamented by his old companions upon the frontier, but by all who have become acquainted with him, since! the rapid settlement and improvement of the country around him. He was emphatically an honest and an upright man. April 22, 1840: We have heard with regret, of the death of Mr. Moses T. MARTIN, of Washington. He was accidentally killed at that place, on the evening of the 11th instant, by the discharge of a pistol in the hands of Mr. Thomas WATERS. Mr. MARTIN was deservedly esteemed by all who knew him, and his death sincerely regretted... ----------------------------------------------- Lost your welcome message? Billie, We have HERRIN(G)S that married into the POOL family. Name is seen as HERRIN-HERRING-HERRON, etc. We also have both John W. MAY and Phillip MAY. John W. MAY'S son, Benjamin F. MAY was the g-grandparent of my school chum who makes a POOL/MAY connection in AL. I've probably mentioned this before. Regarding the information below... Under Jack F. Campbel's letter, thought you might like to look this one over...... William R. Forrest, born 1829 Married Margaret Herrin 1859. They had one son named Henry Jacob Forrest (born 1863 In Edgefield County, SC.), and 2 daughters, Elaine Forrest born 1832 and Elizabeth Forrest born 1836. If William R. Forrest, born 1829 , he could have daughters born in 1832 and 1836. Also, I have from the 1860 Federal Census, Edgefield District, South Carolina, 247 248, a female E. Z. Death notices From the Montgomery Advertiser -Transcribed by Larry E. Caver, Jr. April 21, 1881: Mr. H. PENNINGTON died last week, at Farriorville, in the 82nd year of his age. He was born in Edgefield, South Carolina, and had been an honored and useful citizen of Bullock and Pike Counties for years.
Billie, The Rotton's , Styron's, Burnett's and Holsomback's were connected. I had an Uncle Luther Styron, I believe he married one of my grandmother Fannie Ann Burnett' sisters, but I'm not so sure how it all connects. Conrad Holsomback -----Original Message----- From: Lee and Billie Jones [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, June 20, 2004 5:48 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [SC] Catherine Rotton Styron Gillion d. 1928, Death cert. and family The following death certificates connect to my John Rotton Sr. line. John Rotton Sr. is my 4th great-grandfather thru his son Willis Rotton m. Miranda May of the Charles May line. The following info. is connected to Miranda's brother, John Rotton Jr. who married Elizabeth Leopard. The fact that John Rotton's wife was named Elizabeth is confirmed by the Rocky Creek Baptist Church, Edgefield Co., SC minutes 1831-1875, when on Nov 6, 1853 "John Rotton and his wife Elizabeth" are dismissed by letter (microfilm p. 91) John "Wraton" and Miss Leopard are named as the parents of Mrs. Cattie Gillian in her 1928 Death Cert. #20178, Greenwood Co, SC from which we can also make a presumption of marriage of John Rotton to Elizabeth Leopard. Cattie Gillian is the daughter of John Rotton Jr., and Elizabeth Leopard thru the following line: . 1 John ROTTON, Sr. b: Abt. 1770 in SC d: January 29, 1852 in Edgefield Co., SC . +Mary UNKNOWN b: Abt. 1776 in SC d: July 11, 1855 in Edgefield Co., SC ..... 2 John ROTTON, Jr. b: Abt. 1804 in Edgefield Co., SC d: Aft. 1880 ......... +Elizabeth LEOPARD b: Abt. 1819 in SC d: Aft. 1880 ............ 3 Catherine ROTTON b: July 09, 1854 in Edgefield Co., SC d: November 10, 1928 [The above dates are from her cem. Record at Good Hope Baptist Church. Note the year of birth is different from the death cert., and of course, I could have copied it down wrong. Linda, I took the time yesterday to work on some of the census info. that you sent me, going to the microfilm of the original. This morning I have been working to see if I could fit the pieces together with the info. that has Onor married to Mansfield and then has her as the aunt of Walker Powell per your info. from 1920 census. I did not get to the 1920 census, but did find them in the 1910 census included in the following 'discussion' that I have entered in my notes for Honor Deane. I am also posting the info. to the various lists. There are some active Powell researchers out there, and hopefully they can help. Billie ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Linda Goetz sent me previously unknown information that Mansfield Dean, brother of my gg-grandmother Lina Dean Coursey, had remarried to an Onor ? after the death of his 1st wife, Sarah Styron, Sept 12, 1888. Based on census records showing the length of this 2nd marriage in 1910, they married almost immediately after her death. I am seeking informaton on her, to prove her surname and to figure out how she is connected as an aunt to the Withers Wesley Powell with whom she is living in 1910 and 1920. Hope someone out there can help. Descendants of Mansfield F. Dean 1 Mansfield F. Since they later show up in Aiken, they may have been in Barnwell Co. in 1860, as Barnwell gave up its northern end along with southern Edgefield Dist, to become Aiken in 1871. The Walker Powell, grandson of 1880, works to be the Withers W. She would be the sister of one of his parents and he would then be the grandson of the mother of Honor Walker (jr), in this case Honor Walker(sr), thus matching the census relationships. But who are his parents?? Since he is less than 10, he will not show up with parents in earlier census records. According to Linda Goeta, she is listed in the 1920 census (Langley, Aiken Co, p. 208, 538, sheet 12A) with Walter Powell who names Honora Deane as his aunt. I ran out of time at the archives yesterday to check that one out. Nor did I get a chance to check on his death cert. to see if he died before 1952. I don't have Aiken Co. cem. records here at home to check either. Any help on this group of folks would be appreciated. Just post to the list and Linda and I, along with all those Powell folk with get the info. Billie Jones Camden, SC [email protected]
The following include death cert. that were copied from the microfilm collection at the Camden Archives & Museum, Camden, SC and obits sent to me from the Augusta Chronicle Archives by some fellow researchers. William H. Coursey is the brother of my gg-grandfather, John Franklin Coursey. I would love to correspond with folks who have info. on this family. So far I can find no evidence of desc. Information about the newsletter is available at http://www.eogn.com. Vol. 9 No. 24 - June 14, 2004 - World War II Enlistment Records Available Online The following is a press release from the U.S. National Archives and Archives and Records Administration: National Archives Makes World War II Enlistment Records Available Online College Park, MD... World War II enlistment records for over nine million Army soldiers are now available online, the National Archives and Archives and Records Administration (NARA) announced today. The records are in the World War II Electronic Army Serial Number Merged File available through the Access to Archival Database (AAD) section on NARA's web site (www.archives.gov/aad). AAD is the first publicly accessible application developed under the auspices of NARA's Electronic Records Archives (ERA) Program. The National Archives scanned War Department microfilmed punch cards on enlistments to support the reconstruction of the military personnel records at its National Personnel Records Center. Because of the age of the microfilm, approximately 1.5 million records could not be scanned. Scanning problems also created some errors in the digital records that present unique searching challenges. To help minimize these problems, NARA staff developed a set of Frequently Asked Questions especially for the Army Serial Number File. Despite these challenges, information about a majority of sixteen million World War II servicemen and women is available via the web site. Each record may have the enlistee's serial number and name, state and county of residence, place of enlistment, date of enlistment, grade, branch, term of enlistment, place of birth, year of birth, race, education, civilian occupation, marital status, and component. Because the records are for Army enlistments during World War II, the file does not include records for Army officers, members of other services or enlistments for other time periods. However, it does contain information on more than 130,000 women who enlisted in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. This is the latest of the "born digital" data records related to World War II that the National Archives preserves in a contemporary digital format and makes available through its Access to Archival Databases online resource. The Japanese-American Internee File, 1942 - 1946, has records with personal descriptive data about nearly 110,000 Japanese-Americans whom the War Relocation Authority placed in relocation centers. Another file is the World War II Prisoners of War File, ca. 1942 - ca. 1947, that identifies 143,000 U.S. military officers and soldiers and American and Allied civilians who were prisoners of war and internees. Finally, the Records of Duty Locations for Naval Intelligence Personnel, 1942 - 1945, contain limited data about the military intelligence personnel attached to Naval Group China during World War II.
