SHE AND MY GRANDFATHER. LUKE DAVIS. MIGRATED FROM SUMTER SC. TO PIERCE COUNTY GA. MY GRANDFATHER DIED WHEN MY FATHER NOW DECEASED, WAS A BOY. WE KNOW MY GRANDMOTHER WAS BIRACIAL BECAUSE SHE WAS THEN CALLED MULATTO. SOME FAMILY MEMBERS THINK HER MOTHER MAY HAVE BEEN WHITE. BECAUSE MY GRANDMOTHER NEVER SPOKE OF HER. MY GRANDMOTHER LOOKED WHITE. SHE AND HER SISTERS ALL MOVED TO GA. ALONG WITH MY GRANDFATHER AND HIS BROTHERS THE AVANT SISTERS. BETTY, DIED IN CHILDBIRTH. HER DAUGHTER IS STILL LIVING. ADEL, NOW 93................ LAURA, FLORENCE AND GRANDMOTHER SARAH.WERE ALL SUPPOSED TO BE AVANTS. MY COUSIN FOUND SOME OLD PAPERS THAT LISTED MY GRANDMOTHER AS .........SARAH SUINE. WE HAVE NO IDEAL WHAT THAT IS ABOUT. MY GRANDMOTHER DIDN'T TALK TO HER CHILDREN ABOUT HER PAST. THE DAVISES AND AVANT / AVENTS MUST HAVE BEEN CLOSE. THEY ALL SEEMED TO HAVE COME TO GA TOGETHER. SO THE NAMES YOU HAVE MIGHT BE MY GRANDPARENTS FAMILY................LYZZ DAVIS

I love reading from this group. I keep hoping someone will post something that will lead to my grandparents family. my grandparents seem to have left without a trace. They were born in Sumter SC and moved to GA at a young age. He was Luke Davis. The Davis name is so common we can't find anything about him. My grandmother was Sarah or Sara Avant. he was cherokee. she was called a mulatto. she had three sisters Betty who died in childbirth. Laura, moved to Detroit. and Florence who died in GA. We just found an old letter that said Sarah Suine. so we are doing nothing but hitting brick walls. my Grandfather's brothers were. Porter, Utar and King Davis. if any of these names are in anyones family tree please let me know.............Lyzz Davis

Hello, Are you saying the first name given for your grandmother was AVANT? I know the migration of this family, have some of their records. It was uses variously, AVENT/AVANT, but in Southside VA it is mostly AVENT. The given names of the DAVIS men are not at all familiar to me, but it is possible Luke fits with the DAVIS family that lived in the same locale as the AVENT families. If "mulatto" are you interested in checking an African American site? I send records to Toni Heard all the time because of slaves mentioned on wills, etc. The site hasn't been around very long, but Toni tells me they are collecting more and more records all the time. If you can tell me more about the family in the Carolinas, I will see what I can do. Do not do much work in GA. I am looking for info on the family of Miles C. Puckett. He was a Methodist minister and road the circuit. Depending on the year, he could be found in various places in NC to GA. I believe that his first wife died while he was at a conference meeting in NC. He spent his later years in GA. The rest of the time that I can document, he was in SC. Since both his wives are also from SC (Union Co.) and he is mentioned in probate records there, I believe he probably was born and grew up in that area. However, I have been unable to find any information on any family members such as siblings or parents/uncles. Does anyone have info on the family of Miles C. Puckett from up-state SC? Melanie

HI Velma - The Estes name actually started out in my records as Ewstas in 1494 and went to Eastye had many more variations. My Eastes name abt 1800 and close relatives spell it Eastus. The Eustace surname may have evolved from the ewstas too in England. Phonetics as well as personal preferences played a big part in our present day surnames!!
