    3. Dear Audrey, so good to see your name come up on my screen! It had been some time. I pick up on any reference to the "Alford" name because the Monroe County Alfords were so close to my Roberson and Wright families. They are from S. Carolina and I imagine knew my families before the big move south. I don't research the name Thomas though. Thank you for responding. The name "Alford" is also spelled "Hallaford." Ted and I are doing just great. We are enjoying our summer in Gualala. It has been too warm for me on some days, but of course, it's much cooler there than almost any other place near us. Today we have some fog, so the breezes should be cooler. Our youngest daughter Lauren was with us from Friday through Sunday. Her 20 year old Kyle and 6 year old Jacob came with her. Lauren just always wants to relax...walk on the beach, talk and read...when she is here. Kyle had worked late on Thursday night. And, he slept a lot, too. Jacob shared all of his kindergarten papers with us. To go into first grade, he had to take STA tests. Imagine! Fortunately, he's a very bright little guy and won the "achievement award" for his class of 24. Age 6 1/2 looked sort of comical beside his score! We are concentrating on getting ready for our Amtrak trip. Leaving on September 19, to go to Martinez, where we leave our car. Will return about a month later from Mobile, LA and back to Martinez. My Regan family is planning a get together for us in Mobile on October 14. My big task is getting all our research in good order. I think we may be wasting time and money going to Edgefield and Laurens, S. Carolina, but we are going to go there to see if I can uncover my earlier Robertsons. Thanks to your help over the months, I have notes on various records to look for. We will move down to Lowndes, Butler, Wilcox and Monroe Counties to try to learn more. I finally heard from my cousin's daughter with the info that she didn't think her dad and mother took any sources or documentation notes when they were doing their research in the eighties. Her Dad died last summer and her mother is now living with Sue. Sue has promised not to "throw away" any of her Dad's notes. Maybe we will learn more when we are in Greenville. Do you have any suggestions about doing research in S. Carolina? I have received a lot of helpful info, but could still use more. How are you two? I hope you are both well and are enjoying August. Any plans to travel north? Ted's big artists's studio tour comes up on Labor Day weekend, so he is busy getting ready. If you are interested, go to http://studio-tours.com/site2002/TedNoble.html It should be a good show. Write again. Rogers, Jr.'s THE HISTORY OF GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA: The ALLSTONS were the richest of the Georgetown rice planting factions. Two brothers, John and William Allston, had secured royal grants in 1734 and 1735 on the Waccamaw river, thereby founding a dynasty. John md. Sarah BELIN, leaving at his death in 1750 four sons (John, Josias of Turkey Hill, William of Brookgreen, and Samuel) and one daughter, the wife of Benjamin Marion. Since John had only daughters and Josias ultimately moved to the Cape Fear, William was the sire of the most famous of the double "L" Allstons. 3. Speaking of old books.. "HISTORY OF THE OLD CHERAWS" is now back in print after many years. It covers the entire area of Chesterfield, Darlington, & Marlboro and was written by the Right Rev. Alexander Gregg, DD. It covers the time period of 1730-1810. I understand the Southern Historical Press has reprinted it. It was first published in 1867. There is a notice in the front of the book that says.."This work contains an account of the aborigines of the Pedee, the first white settlements, their subsequent progress, civil changes, the struggle of the Revolution, and growth of the country afterwards, from 1730-1810 , with notices of families and sketches of individuals. It offers the most complete history of a given section of the State to be found." I understand the book is selling for about $50.00, which is a lot better than some of the ones I saw for sale on the internet for the old copies. 3. A friend sent me this today and I thought others might like to read. Here is the link for the article, http://www.thestate.com/mld/thestate/news/local/9342371.htm Derrell Oakley Teat State wants Civil War documents Restraining order filed to prevent letters’ auction By JOHN O’CONNOR Staff Writer The state of South Carolina has gone to court to recover more than 400 Civil War-era documents, a day before they were to be auctioned off. A Charleston court on Friday issued a temporary restraining order preventing the documents’ sale, which had been scheduled for today. Attorney General Henry McMaster also has filed a lawsuit alleging the documents belong to the state and asking they be turned over to it. But the attorney representing the anonymous seller said his client is the rightful owner. The more than 440 letters include correspondence to and from governors Francis Wilkinson Pickens and Milledge Luke Bonham between 1861 and 1863. Among the collection are three letters from Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The letters have an estimated value of $2.4 million. The letters “are clearly state documents and always have been state documents,” McMaster said. “They should be returned to the people.” The letters were written by state officials completing state duties, McMaster said. Other states, such as Virginia and North Carolina, have gone to court to recover historic items, but this is the first such suit in South Carolina, McMaster said. In a sworn statement filed with the suit, S.C. Archives and History director Rodger Stroup said the letters likely were lost when state leaders moved documents during the Civil War. With Union Gen. William Sherman moving toward Columbia — and burning everything in his path — Gov. A.G. Magrath ordered state documents put on trains and shipped away from Columbia, Stroup said. The train car with state documents eventually was stranded in Chester, where some of the documents were hidden around town. Many might not have been returned or recovered, Stroup said. McMaster said USC historian Walter Edgar has examined the letters and thought they were “very significant.” The letters belong to an anonymous Charleston seller, said attorney Kenneth Krawcheck, who represents the seller. The seller’s great-great-grandfather was a Confederate general, and the letters have been in his family since the Civil War. Krawcheck said. His client did not want to sell the letters, Krawcheck said, but needed the money they would generate. The lawsuit, he said, would be a financial hardship. The temporary restraining order gives the state 10 days to prove that an injunction, a longer term stop of the auction, is needed. The case would then head to court to decide who owns the letters. The state would need to prove his client’s family stole or acted improperly in keeping the documents, Krawcheck said. “We believe the law is on our side,” Krawcheck said. “Everybody thought back then that they were where they should be.” Krawcheck said he also was upset that the state filed suit so close to the sale and gave him no warning the lawsuit was coming. McMaster said the issue was brought to his attention a week ago. The lawsuit also has inconvenienced many out-of-town buyers who already had arrived or were on their way to Columbia for the auction, said Bill Mishoe, owner of the auction house selling the items. Buyers from Ohio, Tennessee, Florida and elsewhere were coming for the sale. “They could have told me last week,” Mishoe said. “I don’t have any way of heading them off.” ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Don’t just search. 3. Audrey, In windows based programs, you can also hit the Control + A to select all and then Control + C to copy, then Control + V to paste... no drop down menus, just key strokes. Good luck, Virginia

    3. Harold, Could'nt you open the address book, highlight names you want to send, copy and save, send from your e-mail address...? Wouldn't this be much like sending something from a word processor? I work on wills/deeds in the processor, hit select/copy from drop down and go back to my e-mail and hit paste. I tried to highlight more than one, but looks like it would have to be done one at a time; not much help here. I think you could ask for all of the addresses in your "book" but you may not want to do that! Thinking about the above, could you save as many as you want in the word processor, select and copy, minimize, go to e-mail and paste? Is this what you are trying to do? "Learn to type" is a put-down. My husband gets so frustrated because he never learned to type. 1. Sending copies of one message to multiple people
    2. Question for AOL Users Apparently there is some technique for sending (example) a dozen people the same genealogical inquiry without having to write 12 separate letters. I have received such letters and as well as I remember there is no addressee's name in the SEND TO BOX. There might be wording of some kind in the COPY TO BOX. For those of us who use the typing method of HUNT & PECK, this would be a life saver. If I am not making myself clear, please advise. Grateful for any suggestion, other than "go learn to type."
