Hello folks, and welcome back to RootsWeb's newly upgraded list system. If you are receiving this post it is because you are still a subscriber to this list, even though things have been pretty quiet due to a number of issues lately. The lists are back now, and I believe you will like the improvements that have been made. The most obvious improvement is a new RootsWeb login system, which you will find at the following link: http://home.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/setupmail Only one account per person is needed, and once you have created it you will be able to organize and manage all of your list subscriptions in one handy location. Like anything new there will be something of a learning curve in the beginning, but I really think you will like it for the new security and personalization features for your list subscriptions. And last but not least, please note my email address as List Owner immediately below this message and following my name. Also note the "List information" link below that, which will take you to the information page for this list, where you will find information to help you subscribe, unsubscribe, and some other things based on the current status of your new log in account. I welcome you back to the list, and look forward to working with you in the future tracking down our elusive ancestors. David E. ENTRANCE PATHWAY: James Folk of Newberry Landscapes reports that he has completed the installation of a load of gravel on the pathway to the Cemetery, paid out of our maintenance funds. It had been a few years since this was done. This makes it easier, we hope, to walk into the Cemetery. Always remember, though, to be very careful when walking inside the Cemetery, since the land is very uneven. ON SITE MAP: The Cemetery Maintenance Committee has purchased and installed a realtor's box to dispense maps of the Cemetery for the use of visitors. The map is also available for downloading at: http://askgrannyus.posterous.com/bush-river-flyer-and-map If you visit the Cemetery and don't see the box or find that there are no maps, please let me know at [email protected] NORTH CAROLINA YEARLY MEETING NEWS AND CALL FOR HELP: John Allen, chair of the Cemetery Committee of the North Carolina Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends, has asked for our group's help in gathering information about the Quaker Cemeteries in their jurisdiction, especially those in South Carolina. His committee hopes that, eventually, they can publish information about all the Cemeteries under their care. Last year we had some discussion about SC Quaker Cemeteries and people sent me some basic information about 1. Tyger River Burial Ground 2. Rocky Springs (now called Neel-Harper) 3. Reagin Family Cemetery 4. Gauntt Family Cemetery 5. White Lick 6. Padgett's Creek 7. Pearson, Union County (Barnett Warren has volunteered to head up this info gathering ) First, Do you know of any others? Second, I would be glad for your help in gathering information about the SC Cemeteries. Some of the basic info can be found at https://www.quakermeetings.com/Plone/ Please send any other info you might have to me ([email protected]) and I'll collate it and send it on the John Allen. The Questions that the NCYM sent me are below. 1) Give location of cemetery on today's current state map, road address, GPS coordinates if possible, provide current photo and/or earlier photo if available. Those cemeteries that the Cemetery Committee has erected permanent markers provide photo of the marker such that the lettering/words are legible. 2) Obtain date the meeting was established as well as the date laid down. If it was a Preparative Meeting, provide name of Monthly Meeting that it was under the care of, where memberships are recorded. 3) Determine ownership of the physical property, NCYM or private, and availability of access. Advise if the "Quaker" cemetery has merged with another cemetery. Record the date and situation if merged. 4) List the Cemetery data; size in acres, approximate number of graves, describe condition of grave markers, condition of cemetery, whether the cemetery is enclosed, if it is maintained and by whom, whether it is overgrown, wooded, has periwinkle ground covering, severity of depressions of the graves, or if there is no maintenance. 5) Record Known Quaker families, usually not many. If a cemetery survey has been done, record when, by whom, and the location of a copy of the survey. 6) Interviews can be done of Family descendants, local Meeting / Quarter historian, local genealogy societies, local libraries, and/or freelance writers. Thank you for your help and input on this important project!! Hi, Machpelah Cemetery is mentioned frequently in the early 19th century Charleston Return of Deaths. The only one "nearby" that has that name presently is in North Carolina--too far away to have been the site of these burials. Does anybody know its location and fate? Regards, Peggy PS Machpelah is the name of Abraham's burial place, named in Genesis, in Hebron. The name has been used by both Jews and Christians as the name of a burial ground.
As many of you know, I've been working on a publication which deals with the past and present states of the Horn's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Edgefield, SC. This publication and an earlier one on the "Old Stage Road," are intended to preserve some of the history of the Churchyard and also, and very importantly, to raise money for Miss Clarice Wise's efforts to preserve, protect, and restore the Cemetery. The Churchyard publication is now being completed to send to the printers. Possibly it might be of interest to you. I have posted information about it at: http://askgrannyus.posterous.com/2010-horns-creek-assessment Please let me know, off list, if you have any questions: [email protected] Thank you very much. Judy Russell

I am visiting in SC now but I live in Tennessee and my book is there. I will be home in a week or so and can answer some of your questions. My brother died as a baby and is buried there in an unmarked grave. The people who take care of the cemetery have looked up death certificates etc and know who some of the people are but may not know where in Olympia they are buried. My email is [email protected] and I will be glad to do lookups for any of you. Brenda Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
