    1. [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] finding a book
    2. Judith F. Russell
    3. besides the Library of Congress, you might try www.worldcat.com, which should tell you where the nearest copy of your book is. Then go to your local library and ask for help with Inter Library Loan...or if it is convenient, go to the Library first. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Melissa Hogan" <genealogistinal@yahoo.com> To: <sc-bushriverquakers@rootsweb.com> Cc: <Jbrown400@aol.com> Sent: Saturday, March 17, 2012 8:32 AM Subject: Re: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] [PaOldC] John JONES,d. @ 1797 Edgefield SC Harriet did a great job on this John Jones and his line. I tried to reply when I saw the email but for some reason my reply went to the list request email vs. the general list mail? I descend from John and Margaret through their son, Jonathan. I am looking for a book written by one of these descendants called "Man and Destiny". It was mentioned in the obituary of one of Jonathan's children in 1914, but they did not say which JONES wrote the book, just that it was a "work of over a 1000 pages" :) I BELIEVE the individual who "could" have written the book is John and Margaret's youngest son, John, who was a minister. I have searched OCLC, ebay and various book sites over the years with no luck. Does anyone have any other suggestions of where I might find this book? Ultimately I would love to have a copy, but just "finding" it would be success at this point. Melissa ________________________________ From: Harriet Imrey <hhimrey@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Fw: [PaOldC] John JONES, d. @ 1797 Edgefield SC Three different John Joneses headed households in the 1790 Edgefield SC census. The one who signed his will on 5 Oct 1796 (proven Jan Term 1797) was survived by 7 children. So the "right John Jones" was the one who had children (five boys b. 1774<90, one girl, wife and no slaves) as of 1790. He's the one listed at M637-11, p. 512. John Jones was not Quaker, but his wife Margaret Benson was. They married in Philadelphia on 1 May 1771; their first two children were born (and died) in Chester Co PA. Several Quakers from Uwchlan MM (Chester Co PA) got certificates for Wrightsborough MM in GA at much the same time. Margaret (Benson) Jones, born 13 Jun 1751 in Goshen PA, reportedly died 6 Sep 1794 in Edgefield Co SC, was issued a certificate on 5 Sep 1778. Her mother, Jane Evans/Jones Benson, her brother William Benson Jr., and her brother Robert Benson, received certificates from Uwchlan MM to Wrightsborough MM on 11mo 10da 1774. William Benson Sr. had been disowned by Uwchlan in 1761, so it's unclear if he too went to GA. The certificates for the two Benson brothers were received by Wrightsborough MM on 2mo 3da 1776. William Benson (Jr.) was disowned on 10mo 8da 1780 for the multiple offenses of carrying arms in defense of his person, gaming, playing cards, and officiating as a clerk at a lottery. It is unknown how long John and Margaret Benson Jones may have remained at Wrightsborough before relocating to Edgefield SC. A certificate for Margaret Jones was issued by Wrightsborough MM on 7mo 6da 1793, received by Bush River MM on 5mo 30da 1795 (after her reported death). John and Margaret Jones were definitely in Edgefield by 1786. Other Uwchlan MM migrants to Wrightsborough included John Butler in 1778; he returned to Uwchlan in 1781. The last one was Daniel Williams (b. 17 Jul 1747 in PA, d. 7 Feb 1802 in Wrightsborough GA). His paternal grandmother was a Jane Jones (sister of Evan), although not necessarily related to the other Jones families of PA, GA or SC. His wife, Mary Humphrey, had some Bush River connections. She was the daughter of Owen and Sarah Embree Humphrey, Sarah being the daughter of Moses Embree (Sr.) Daniel Williams was a preacher at Wrightsborough as of 1788. John Jones (d. 1796 in Edgefield) named him as executor of his will. The witnesses to the 1796 Edgefield Co will of John Jones were John Drinkard, Thomas Atkinson, and James Scott. John Drinkard died in 1817 in Abbeville Co SC, and was probably not Quaker. Thomas Atkinson (b. 18 Sep 1741, son of Henry and Ann) was a Quaker, first mentioned in 1768 when admitted to Cane Creek MM (NC) by certificate; the Hinshaw abstract does not note from which meeting. The Cane Creek birth records include the 5 children born 1766-75 to first wife Ruth Cruze/Crews, and the first two of the children born to second wife Ruth Harvey (b. Chester Co PA to Isaac and Martha Harvey), who married Thomas Atkinson on 9mo 5da 1781 at Cane Creek. The Wrightsborough MM birth records include 10 children of Thomas and Ruth Harvey Atkinson. The first child not listed at Cane Creek was Henry, b. 21 Feb 1786, presumably after the family arrived in Wrightsborough. The meeting records do not include the movements of the Atkinson family, until Thomas with wife Rth and the four youngest children were received at Short Creek MM (Jefferson Co OH) on 18 Jul 1807, after referral from Concord MM, on certificate issued by Bush River MM dated 20 Mar 1807. When Thomas Atkinson witnessed the 1796 John Jones will, he could have been a resident of Wrightsborough GA, of Edgefield Co SC, or of Newberry Co SC. The third witness, James Scott, was not known to have a Quaker background, but had Quaker associations. His daughter Elizabeth Scott married James Coate, son of John Coate of Bush River. The older John Jones (b. ~1717, d. 9 Jun 1781 in Wrightsborough) also named Daniel Williams as his executor. The older John Jones and wife Mary were received by Exeter MM (Berks Co PA) in 1751, granted a certificate to Cane Creek MM (Orange Co NC) in 1753, then to Fredericksburgh MM (SC) in 1769. He apparently lived at Bush River for a while before becoming a constituent member of Wrightsborough MM in 1774. Giles and Sarah Jackson Chapman sold their 300-acre grant on Scotch Creek to a John Jones on 7 & 8 Jan 1772 [SC Deed Book G-4, pp. 55-59]. That particular property was later the site of the town/courthouse of Newberry SC. The 1781 GA will of "old John" named his mentally-disabled son James (b. ~1740-50 in PA) as being in need of care by his brothers. Judge John B. O'Neall reported in Annals of Newberry that James Jones, "a very old stranger, apparently between 70 and 80--an idiot", visited from GA in 1819 and said that his father once "lived thereabouts". He recognized old houses in/near the town, and referred to people long dead. After a few days, he left and presumably returned to GA. This story suggests that John Jones from Berks Co PA (d. 1781 in Wrightsborough) was the same John Jones who purchased the Chapman land in 1772. The first identifiable land record for John (with Margaret Benson) Jones in Edgefield SC was a purchase of 320 acres from the state of SC, surveyed 3 Sep 1794. This was a tract of 320 acres on Rocky Creek--the full creek address is Rocky Creek of Little Stevens Creek of Sleepy Creek of Turkey Creek of Stevens Creek of the Savannah River (whew!). This land was sold by his son David Jones, resident in Columbia Co GA, to William Partin/Partain in two parcels on 4 Feb 1807 [Edgefield Deed Book 33, pp. 25-28]. David Jones sold another tract of 192 acres of inherited land to John Arledge on 17 Jan 1809 [Edgefield SC Deed Book 30, p. 299]. The names and dates of birth and death for the children of John and Margaret Jones were added at a later date to the Bible of Lambert Jefferson Jones, a grandson (by son Elijah) resident in Newberry Co SC. Spouses and locations added, where known to me: 1. Jane Jones, b. 11 Jan 1772 in Chester Co PA; d. 25 Sep 1777 in Chester Co PA. 2. William Jones, b. 28 Nov 1774 in Chester Co PA; d. 25 Sep 1777 in Chester Co PA. 3. David Jones, b. 7 Jan 1778 in Chester Co PA (d. before 1783). 4. William Jones, b. 28 Feb 1780; d. 28 Feb 1791 in Edgefield Co SC. 5. Sarah Jones, b. 8 Jan 1782; d. 30 Mar 1783. 6. Jonathan Jones, b. 19 Dec 1783; d. 23 Jul 1833 in Bibb Co AL. Will signed 3 Jul 1833. He married Epsa Dilla Jones, daughter of Nathan and Elizabeth Jones (previous residents of Columbia Co GA). His father-in-law Nathan Jones died in Bibb Co AL, administrators appointed 22 Nov 1823. 7. David Jones, b. 19 Dec 1783 (twin to Jonathan); d. 18 Jan 1845 in Dooly/Macon Co GA. He married Mary Mendenhall on 14 May 1806 in Warren Co GA. They lived in Columbia Co GA through 1820, and Dooly Co GA in 1830. On 7 Dec 1835, David Jones deeded 4+ acres of land to the trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Travelers Rest. Both David and Mary were buried in this cemetery (Montezuma, Macon Co GA). "Beneath this stone rests the mortal remains of Mary Jones, wife of David Jones, and daughter of Marmaduke & Alice Mendenhall. B. Wilkes Co., GA, January 25, 1785, Died October 26, 1838." "Sacred to the memory of David Jones, a native of Edgefield District, South Carolina, Who was born January 7, 1788 and died January the first 1845." [Note that the dates differ between the gravestone and the Bible entry.] 8. Elijah Jones, b. 19 Jan 1786 in Edgefield Co SC; d. 21 Feb 1818 in Newberry Co SC. He married Anne Miles (18 Oct 1786 - 10 Dec 1824) on 12 Oct 1806 in Newberry Co SC. He was the only child of this family who remained in SC. 9. Elisha Jones, b. 19 Jan 1786 in Edgefield Co SC (twin to Elijah); d. 7 Sep 1840 in Miami Co OH. He was received by request at Bush River MM on 31 Jul 1802, and granted a certificate to Miami MM (OH) on 28 Dec 1805. He went with David Jenkins, to whom he had been apprenticed following his father's death (see Annals of Newberry, pp. 351-2). He married Susannah Hollingsworth on 15 May 1806 in Warren Co OH (Tadsfork MH). Susannah died on 22 May 1817 at West Branch MM. Elisha next married Rebecca Pearson on 30 Jul 1818 at Mill Creek MM. Elisha Jones's son David was the writer of the supplementary section of Annals of Newberry, "The Friends and Their Migration to Ohio." 10. Benson Jones, b. 3 Jan 1788 in Edgefield Co SC; d. 17 Sep 1834 in Cass Township, Greene Co IN. He married Priscilla, daughter of John and Hepzibah Gilbert O'Neall. John O'Neall was granted to certificate from Bush River MM to Indiana in 1819. 11. Susannah Jones, b. 10 Oct 1789 in Edgefield Co SC; d. 11 Sep 1859 in Cass Township, Greene Co IN. She married Samuel Hughen in Newberry Co SC. She was the only child of John and Margaret Jones who survived until the 1850 census. She is listed in Greene Co IN; her married son Elisha Jones Hughen and his family lived in her household (M432-148, p. 429). 12. John Jones, b. 19 Feb 1792 in Edgefield Co SC; d. 11 Sep 1842 (Bible date) in Covington, Newton Co, GA. His obituary was published in the Southern Christian Advocate on 21 Oct 1842: "Died 28 Aug 1842, Rev. John Jones, born in Edgefield District SC Feb. 19, 1792. His parents died when he was an infant and a Welch Quaker family raised him. He married at the age of 21 years to Nancy Sheppard of Newberry District SC and joined the ME Church in 1817; licensed to preach in 1817; licensed as a minister in 1819; received into the ministerial conference in Sept. 1819. He moved to Covington GA 1826." Harriet Imrey On 3/12/2012 6:28 AM, Judith F.
