The Elijah Hunt (1800-58) we've been discussing somehow "ought" to be a grandson of Ralph and Rachel Campbell Hunt of Union Co SC. If that were the case, it should be possible to place him within the family of one of the six sons. Ralph and Rachel had 10 children, 3 born prior to the relocation to SC in 1772 (e.g., John was born in PA). Neither of them had previously been Quaker; they and the children were received by request at Bush River MM on 26 Sep 1776. Rachel died on 18 Mar 1790, Ralph in 1800. The births of the children were included in the Bush River MM records: 1. 11 Jan 1764 Mary [disowned by Bush River MM on 28 Aug 1784 after marrying Roger Potts] 2. 19 Jun 1766 Samuel [married Quaker Margaret Townsend; disowned by Miami MM on 10 Mar 1808] 3. 27 Sep 1768 John [married non-Quaker Jane Little; men's minutes of Cane Creek MM not preserved] 4. 25 May 1772 Ralph [married non-Quaker Ann xxx in SC, two other marriages in Spencer Co IN] 5. 15 Feb 1775 Rachel [disowned by Cane Creek MM on 23 Mar 1799 after marrying xxx Kelly] 6. 1 Jul 1777 Isaiah [married non-Quaker Martha Douglass in SC; men's minutes not preserved] 7. 6 Nov 1779 Christiana [disowned by Cane Creek MM on 20 Jun 1801 (reason not stated); married Thomas Penny in Ohio Co KY on 22 Oct 1807. 8. 12 Apr 1782 Edward 9. 30 May 1784 Abraham [married Sarah rpt. Chamness] 10. 8 Jan 1786 Joanna [disowned by Cane Creek MM on 18 Feb 1804 after marrying xxx Cooper] The two youngest sons, Abraham and Edward, were living with stepmother Mary Cook Hunt in Union Co SC in 1800 (census day was Aug 4). They could not have married and/or become a father by Dec 1800. Edward left a will in Randolph Co IN in 1844, Abraham in 1851. Neither had a son named Elijah. The two oldest sons, Samuel and John, were certainly old enough to be the father of Elijah, but neither of them was. The children of Samuel were not named in the SC MM records, but they were listed in the Miami MM (Warren Co OH) records. Samuel and Margaret Townsend Hunt had 6 daughters and no sons. A biography of John Hunt (1768-1855) was included in the 1882 Beers' History of Warren County Ohio. The bio named his wives and children. He had one son Ralph (b. 1802 in SC) by Jane Little, and one son John (b. 1820) by Rachel Jones Morey. Four of the Hunt siblings left Union Co SC for Ohio Co KY in ~1802, where they lived adjacent to one another in the part of the county included in Daviess Co KY by 1820. Those were Roger and Mary Hunt Potts, Ralph and Ann Hunt, Isaiah and Martha Douglass Hunt, and unmarried Christiana Hunt. They were joined there by Union Co neighbors named Penny, Minton, Spray and Little, and probably others. Christiana Hunt married Thomas Penny in Ohio Co KY on 22 Oct 1807. At the 1810 census of Ohio Co KY, Ralph Hunt's household included two boys, both under 10; Isaiah Hunt's household included one boy, also under 10. The 1820 census of Daviess Co KY indicated that all three of these boys were born between 1804 and 1810. Ralph Hunt moved across the river to Spencer Co IN in 1822. The 1830 census of Spencer Co OH (Grass TWP) includes the household of Ralph Hunt on the same page with his two oldest sons (Samuel, b. ~1805, and James M., b. 19 Dec 1807). Isaiah's single son was identified as Isaiah Jr. (b. 7 Jan 1807) in the estate documents following his death in 1832. In short--none of the 6 sons of Ralph and Rachel Campbell Hunt had a son named Elijah. Five of Elijah's sons offered an opinion about his state of birth at the 1880 census: Sons of Susanna McCool: 1. Ralph Hunt (27 Mar 1824 - 6 Mar 1888) said that Elijah was born in SC (Darke Co OH, T9-1010, p. 265). 2. Abraham Hunt (3 Dec 1834 - 28 Sep 1920) said that Elijah was born in NC (Darke Co OH, T9-1010, p. 261); Abraham revised that to SC at the 1920 census, Miami Co OH. 3. Richard M. Hunt (8 May 1837 - 10 Jul 1880) said that Elijah was born in NC (Darke Co OH, T9-1010, p. 251). Sons of Hannah Rhodehamel Richardson: 1. John W. Hunt (1843 - 1908) said that Elijah was born in NC (Howard Co IN, T9-285, p. 496). 2. Elijah Hunt (Jr., 15 May 1846 - 11 Apr 1912) said that Elijah was born in NC (Hancock Co IN, T9-282, p. 187); his mother Anna/Hannah lived with him at the time. If the majority vote was correct, then Elijah Hunt was born 18 Dec 1800 in NC. There were, of course, numerous Hunt families in NC at the time, some of them Quakers, some of them descended from immigrant Ralph Hunt, and some of those from NC wound up in OH and IN in the early 19th century. It seems like a few coincidences too many for an unrelated Hunt from somewhere in NC to pop up in Miami Co OH, marry a McCool girl from Union Co SC, hang out closely with Christiana Hunt Penny of Union Co SC, and name his children Ralph, Rachel and Abraham (among other names). With Christiana the only child of Ralph and Rachel Hunt to move to Miami Co OH, her migration pattern was the one that Elijah Hunt "ought" to have followed. But the brothers with whom Christiana went to KY did not have a son named Elijah, and did not go to Miami Co OH. There is another possibility, which does not come quickly to mind for a Quaker family, but is within the realm of probability. Christiana Hunt was disowned by Cane Creek in Jun 1801. She had not "married out" then--she did that later, in Oct 1807. An out-of-wedlock child would result in disownment. The 1810 census of Ohio Co KY shows 3 males under 10 in the Thomas Penny household, two of whom were in his household in 1820 in Miami Co OH. The first two (known) sons of Thomas Penny and Christiana Hunt were John F. Penny (b. 18 Jun 1808) and Henry Penny (b. 1809/10). There was no time to work in a third son between the marriage in Oct 1807 and census day of 1810 (Aug 6). The original women's minutes of Cane Creek MM, transferred to Caesar's Creek MM in IN, would include the reason for Christiana Hunt's disownment. It is at least remotely possible that she was a single mother, with a son named Elijah, at the time of her marriage. It is interesting that Henry Penny (Christiana's prospective father-in-law, rather than one of her two nearby brothers) was the one who testified for the 1807 marriage that Christiana was over age 21, and could therefore marry without family permission.
