Before selecting a company to test with, I'd suggest you look at FTDNA: http://www.familytreedna.com Joy ----- Original Message ----- From: Wyatt, Susan D. You can go to www.Ancestry.com and you will see their advertisement for it, usually on the right side of the page.
Ancestry.com web support for DNA is very poor for administrators and users in my opinion. I've been pulling my hair out trying to round up stragglers who tested through them not knowing about the "big" Gilbert DNA project. In my opinion, if you're a male, the best bang for the buck right now is the 37 marker test from Family Tree DNA that's discounted through the end of the month. A man's Y-DNA is ONLY applicable to a surname project for his last name (in theory), so you'd want to go to the Family Tree DNA website and see if there's a surname project running for the surname. If there's no project, that complicates things a little, but there are ways around it. If anyone wants to have a Y-DNA test performed on themselves or a male in the family, I'll be happy to help you through the process, including letting you test through the Gilbert project to get the project discount if no surname project exists for your surname. Go to the link for familytreedna.com below and plug in your surname to see if a surname project already exists. Or do a bit of googling to see if there's already a project underway with another company. If not, join the BritishQuakers project below to get the project discount rates and support from like-minded researchers. https://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=N55947&special=true FamilyTreeDNA.com is also having a special rate reduction through the end of September. It may possibly be extended, since the head office (not the labs) is in Houston, but I wouldn't count on it. The best kit to order is the Y-DNA 37 marker kit for your oldest generation living (of course!) male who bears the targeted surname. You can see the rates by going to the link for BritishQuakers above, scroll down into the application section of the page and look at the TYPE OF TEST menu.
