This is the single Harbert family mentioned in the Bush River MM records, or mentioned as Quaker in Annals of Newberry or the early deed books. The spelling was generally Harbert, but Harbour, Harburt and Herbart were alternates. The second generation preferred Herbert. Walter Sr. marked with an H, did not spell. Walter Harbert (Sr.) did not get a colonial land grant, so may have arrived in Newberry not long before he was received by request at Bush River MM on 30 Mar 1776 (i.e., no certificate from a previous meeting). He purchased land between Little River and Beaverdam Creek of the Saluda. He was in fellowship at the time of his death on 26 Oct 1797. The MM records list the children of Walter Harbert (Sr.) and Ann: 1. Mary, b. 15 Jan 1765. 2. Rebecah, b. 28 May 1767; m. Isaac Jenkins on 10 Nov 1785. 3. John, b. 8 Mar 1764; rpt mou Feb 1789; disowned 30 Apr 1796. 4. Ann, b. 3 Apr 1771. 5. Walter, b. 13 Jun 1773; m. Ann Galbreath on 27 Feb 1796; disowned 29 Jan 1803. 6. Alizabeth, b. 18 Nov 1775. 7. Rachel, b. 13 Feb 1777; disowned 24 Feb 1798. 8. Charity, b. 10 Sep 1781. 9. Peter, b. 14 Apr 1784. 10. Thomas, b. 10 Aug 1787; d. 13 May 1788. In 1809, the 130 remaining members of Bush River MM and Cane Creek MM were joined to New Garden MM. Those members included Ann Herbert sr. (widow of Walter Harbert Sr.); Lydia Herbert (wife of John?) and children Esther, Ann, Eleanor, Martha, Jobe and Lydia; and Ann Herbert (Ann Galbreath, wife of Walter Jr.?) and children Hannah, Isaac, William and Peter. The 8 May 1822 men's minutes show that Isaac, William and Peter Harbert (sons of Walter Jr.) were received at Springfield MM; the 5 Jun 1822 women's minutes list Ann Herbert (wife of Walter Jr.?) as joining Springfield MM. The Newberry documents do not show absolute proof that the woman who married John Harbert in 1789 (one daughter by 1790) was named Lydia, but imply it. John and Mary Eleman sold land in 1793 to Aron Mills [also Miles], all of them from Quaker families. The deed was witnessed by John Harbert (who marked with an H, as did Walter Harbert Sr.), Lydia Harbert, and Rebecca Mills (Newberry Deed Book B, pp. 491-2). A same-surnamed man and woman who jointly witnessed a deed were nearly always a married couple, but there were a few exceptions. Lydia Harbert in 1793 was not a wife of Walter Jr. (who married Ann in 1796) and was not a wife of 9-year-old Peter. That seems to leave John Harbert as her only potential spouse. John Harbert proved the deed by oath, not by affirmation. He was not behaving in a Friend-ly manner on the marital or legal fronts. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Herbert" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, January 25, 2008 12:42 AM Subject: Re: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] New member searching for family I think I'm the one you want to talk to. My name is John Herbert, descendant of Peter(1784), last born son of Walter(1742). I live in Maryland. Other brothers were Walter(b.1773), John((b.1769). A descendant of John is living in El Paso. Have you a given name for your gt gt gt gt grandfather's brother? The Walter you saw in the Quaker cemetery outside Newberry was probably Walter(1773); nearby would be his wife Ann Galbreath. The Walter (1742) who came from New Jersey had a falling out with the Quakers, and was dismissed from the Friends, so he and his wife Ann are buried somewhere else. John Herbert, 116 Stewart Dr, Maryland 21037, [email protected] Very glad to hear from you. I have lots for you if you want it. After taking up the mantlet of family historian, I came across a couple of family members who had moved from New Jersey to South Carolina and settled in the Newberry area. Being Quakers, I assumed (correctly) that they would be either buried there or related to some who are. I have already found Walter Herbert buried there, who is my great-great-great-great grandfathers' brother. Taking Mrs. Russells' suggestion, I would ask anyone else who subscribes to this newsletter to see if they have any information regarding the Herbert family that lived in Newberry from 1762 onwards. Any info you have would be extremely helpful to the cause. Anything I can do for everyone, please just let me know. Thanks! Sincerely, CPT Mark Herbert Fort Knox, Kentucky
