    3. There was a mass migration of Quakers from that area (SC) into Miami County Ohio starting very early 1800s. One reason was the slave issue. Ohio from it's beginning in 1804 has always been a free state. These early Quakers came north over the mountains, then followed the Great Miami River north from the Ohio River. Then, from the Dayton area, up the west-branch of the Great Miami (now known as The Stillwater River). These Quakers settled heavily in what is now Union Township, and the south half of what is now Newton Township of Miami County. That was before Miami County became a county, which took place in 1807. At first this area was a part of The North-West Territory then part of Hamilton County, then part of Montgomery County, and after 16 Jan 1807 it was Miami County Ohio. Later both Darke and Shelby counties were formed from parts of Miami Co. Soon after the Quakers came the Brethren (Dunkers/Tunkers) who did about the same thing, except they mostly came from Pennsylvania, down the Ohio River, them followed the Great Miami River north. These Brethren mostly took up land in Montgomery Co (as did some of the Quakers) then on up the west-branch of the Miami River (Stillwater) and settled north of the Quakers, which mostly placed the Brethren in northern Newton Twp and Newberry Twp. They too, like the Quakers, were opposed to slavery and war. The Quakers and the Brethren got along well with somewhat similar beliefs. Between the two (Quakers and Brethren) they settled the early wilderness of western Miami County Ohio. This was all before the first Miami County census of 1820.
