While packing for my trip to Newberry County for the homecoming this weekend of the Historic Bush River Quaker Cemetery I found my copy of the transcription of Nehemiah Thomas's Will of 1796. Here it is: Box 361, Pkg. 38 1796 Nehemiah Thomas Abegail Thomas Exec. LWT 26 of 5t Month 1796 Proven 17 Oct 1796 Bk. B, p. 80 _Nephew, Edward Thomas s/o Edward Thomas of NC. 10 shillings plus residue of my estate after paying legacies and debts. Wife, Abigail to be sole executor and receives lands for use during her lifetime. after death of wife lands to Nehemiah Mills, s/o Thomas Mills a blacksmith of SC Newberry County if wife should die before Nehemiah Mills becomes 21 yrs. of age, lands to be rented and proceeds to be given to Nehemiah McKenzie s/o Geroge McKenzie until Nehemiah Mills becomes 21 years of age. after deato of wife, executors to be Thomas Mills, George McKenzie, and Hugh O'Neal after death of wife, all movables sold and given to: nephew John Dobbins, 10 pounds, nephew James Dobbins, 10 pounds, nephew Thomas Johnston, 10 pounds, overplus equally divided between Sarah w/o George McKenzie and Sarah w/o Thomas Mills. Witnesses: Sarah Buffington, Wm Ham, and Hugh Oneal So I think that you can see why I am not convinced one way or the other whether Sarah Thomas McKinsey is sister or niece to Nehemiah Thomas. Nehemiah McKenzie is said to have been born 7 March 1795. I have not documented that so don't know where I got that date. But that would have made him VERY young when this will was made. Abigail died at the age of 81 in 1821 according to the minutes of the Miami MM in Ohio. So in 1796 she would have been 56. That would seem to me to be a generation older than Sarah who is still having babies in 1796. Also Sarah is named at the end of a list of nephews and it seems to me that no other of Nehemiah's siblings are named....it is their children who are legatees. So here are my notes about the siblings of Nehemiah: Edward in NC sister who married Dobbins and has sons John and James sister who married Johnston and had son named Thomas father of Sarah who married George McKinsey (unless Edward in NC is the father of this Sarah) father of Sarah who married thomas Mills. My notes say that Edward's wife is also Sarah.....but no documentation for that. I'll send another note about another Sarah...but this one is getting too long. marsha in WV
Hi Marsha, Nehemiah McKinsey was born about 1795, in South Carolina, married Catherine Elliot about 1826 in Ohio, and died about 1874 in Indiana. He would only have about 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 years old at the time Nehemiah died.
