    3. One of the things that I found a couple of spare minutes to do while attending the Bush River Homecoming 2008 this past weekend was to look at a book in the Newberry Library. The book is The Dutch Fork An Atlas of the Dutch Fork of Newberry District, SC by Carl W. Nichols. Dr. Nichols has copyright of 2001 with the words that none of the book may be reproduced without written permission of the author. Here is the address and information to order if anyone would want a copy: $45 ($40 + $5 for shipping and handling) to: Dr. Carl W. Nichols 2642 Cravey Drive NE Atlanta, Ga 30345 I made a few notes while I was in the library from this book: On page 62 there is a map showing the land of George McKinsey and Nelson Dunkin ....250 acres that sits where a road labeled 43 runs into a road that seems to come from Newberry environs south labeled 395. George and Nelson's names are shown in parentheses while a Thomas Shaw is at the top of the plat. There is a date of 23 Nov 1764 in the middle. After going to the courthouse briefly I believe that George bought land from Thos and Sarah Shaw Jan 8, 1773 according to deedbook D-2 page 6. George also bought land from Wm Hilburn with deed dated Jan 22, 1779. Both of these deeds were recorded June 16, 1797. I will wait until I received the book before I do anymore interpreting on this. But I did write down the neighbors and I would say that our ancestors were absolutely neighbors and lives entertwined! Here are some of the neighbors found on pages 62-63 of this book: Nehemiah Thomas 1767 whose land was on both sides of the Bush River and adjoined the land that Thomas Shaw had originally owned. Joseph Wright 1766. William McTeer/ Michael Dorman 1767 ---looks to have later been owned by Samuel Pearson, William Hilborn, Joseph Wright 1766, Peter Hawkins 1786, Israel Gaunt 1768---later Peter Hawkins, Isaac Thomas 1786, John Mills, William Mills 1767, Reason Reagan, Edward Thomas 1772--later Timothy Thomas, John Dobbins 1784.... I almost feel as if I know these people now that we have all been together for a weekend talking about the ancestors who lived in the Bush River area. Marsha Moses

    3. Wow! This certainly makes sense! This could be a HUGE clue for me! The Hilburn land certainly adjoins the land bought by George McKinsey and Nelson Duncan as does that of Joseph Wright! It looks as if John and Rachel Wells Wright move to Newberry VERY early with children already born: William, Mary, Joseph, Margaret, Charity, Rachel, John, No wait...the 1749 move to SC must be a stretch as the following children born in Orange County, NC: Sarah, Hannah, James, Susannah and children of unknown place of birth: Elizabeth and Nathan and children born in Newberry: Keziah and Isaac. Interestingly enough in Nehemiah Thomas's Will he names as a legatee, nephew Edward Thomas, son of Edward Thomas of North Carolina. The only Edward Thomas that I have found in NC is living in Orange County, NC....I do believe that there was a great deal of back and forth between Newberry and Orange, Guilford, Old Rowan County, NC..... Look down below for one more comment: Geneology York wrote: > Christopher DUNCAN >. +Elizabeth HILLBURN m: February 15, 1786 VA; Fauquier CO? notes illegible >or Hilburn > > > I'll try to look at Fauquier County for a marriage....or for information that some of these Quakers moved here before starting south to the Carolinas. Fauquier County seems to adjoin Louden which would line up with the information from the speaker at the Virginia Genealogical Society's Spring event about the French and Indian War: that the Quakers at Hopewell MM moved to Louden to escape the Indian depredations while the Germans moved to Frederick County, MD....I hope that I understood him correctly....I think that he meant Louden County--not the fort named Louden. I need to look into this further. >and: >Descendants of John Wright > > 1 John WRIGHT b: November 4, 1716 Chester CO, PA; lived in Prince >George CO, MD d: ABT 1789 Newberry CO, SC >. +Rachel WELLS Father: Joseph Wells Mother: Rachel b: March 27, 1720 Anne >Arundel CO, MD;SHE was Quaker minister d: December 23, 1771 Newberry CO, >SC;1749 move to SC >. 2 William WRIGHT b: January 2, 1737/38 Monacacy Valley, Prince George >Co, MD >..... +Leah TANSEY m: May 15, 1758 Cane Creek Meeting; Orange CO, NC >. 2 Mary WRIGHT b: July 24, 1739 >..... +Joel BROOKS m: September 20, 1756 Father: Matthew Brooks Mother: >Elizabeth >. 2 Joseph WRIGHT b: December 12, 1740 d: Bef. 1789 >..... +CHARITY >. 2 [1] Margaret WRIGHT b: November 12, 1742 >..... +John HAMMER d: Aft. 1818 in Guilford CO, NC? >. *2nd Husband of [1] Margaret WRIGHT: >..... +Joseph HOLLINGSWORTH >. 2 Charity WRIGHT b: February 12, 1744/45 Prince George CO, MD; SHE >was Quaker minister d: November 13, 1822 Clinton CO, OH >..... +Isaac COOK Father: Thomas Cook Mother: Mary b: 1743 d: January 15, >1820 OH >. 2 Rachel WRIGHT b: November 10, 1747 >..... +John (Coate) COATS d: Aft. 1773 in SC records w/Kinsler >. 2 John WRIGHT b: December 12, 1748 Prince George CO, MD d: ABT 1790 >Newberry CO, SC >..... +Jemima HAWORTH m: October 10, 1768 Father: James Haworth Mother: >Sarah Wood b: 1748 d: August 14, 1828 Highland CO, OH >. 2 Sarah WRIGHT b: December 24, 1749 Orange CO, NC d: November 18, >1789 SC >..... +James BROOKS >. 2 Hannah WRIGHT b: September 27, 1751 Orange CO, NC >..... +James FARMER b: or Parmer >. 2 James WRIGHT b: May 28, 1753 d: October 19, 1812 Clinton CO, OH >..... +Sarah HAYWORTH m: August 27, 1774 Father: James Haworth Mother: >Sarah Wood b: March 12, 1756 d: February 9, 1831 Clinton CO, OH >. 2 susannah WRIGHT b: April 16, 1755 Orange CO, NC; SHE was a Quaker >minister d: July 30, 1830 West Milton, OH >..... +Isaac HOLLINGSWORTH m: December 12, 1772 Bush River Meeting, SC b: >1737 d: 1809 >. 2 Elizabeth WRIGHT b: December 15, 1756 >..... +Gabriel MCCOOL m: December 15, 1773 Father: James McCool Mother: Ann >Wright >. 2 Nathan WRIGHT b: October 7, 1758 d: ABT 1805 Newberry CO, SC >..... +Elizabeth JAY m: 1778 >. 2 Keziah WRIGHT b: 1763 Newberry CO, SC d: Bef. 1789 OH >..... +William HANKS d: Newberry CO, SC >. 2 Isaac WRIGHT b: June 13, 1764 Newberry CO, SC d: February 20, 1844 >Howard CO, IN >..... +Susannah HAWORTH m: February 19, 1784 Greene CO, TN Father: Richard >Haworth Mother: Ann b: July 27, 1777 d: Howard CO, IN > > > On the below, I would remark that one of George and Sarah Thomas McKinsey's children also marry a daughter or sister to Rezen/Reason Reagan. Mordecai McKinsey who is said to be 66 in the 1850 census married Katherine Reagan. One of my good buddies, Roberta, found a deposition that absolutely connects Reason and Katherine. I am not totally clear, however, if Reason is father or brother to her. Reason's parents are clearly named as Thomas and Hannah Reagon. .....the below gives some credence to the possibility that this Hannah (mother of Reason) could have been a Pugh--unless, of course, this Hannah below had first husband's name of Pugh rather than middle birth name of Pugh. >and from Mark Freeman's notes: > >Descendants of David Ross Houston > > 1 David Ross HOUSTON b: Ireland or SC; >. +Hannah Pugh REAGAN Father: Rezen Reagan b: Ireland or SC; lived >Williamson Co, TN >. 2 George Smith (Gov.) 1. [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Plat maps for Bush River settlement
    2. Harriet Imrey
    3. A plat map called "The Dutch Fork of Newberry District S.C.", by Dr. Carl W. Nichols, is available from the Chapter Publications list at www.dutchforkchapter.org. The Bush River is the western boundary of the portion covered, so it excludes the Quaker families who lived between Bush River and Little River to the west. The site of the meetinghouse/cemtery is marked at the far southwestern end of the map, so you can see where many of the settlers lived in relation to it. One useful addition is that Dr. Nichols identified the current roads (including tiny county roads), which makes it possible to pinpoint locations. If your families lived on the west side of Bush River or on Beaverdam Creek (there were 3 of those very near one another), you're more likely to find their locations in Jesse Hogan Motes III and Margaret Peckham Motes, Laurens and Newberry Counties South Carolina: Saluda and Little River Settlements 1749-1775 (Greenville Co SC: Southern Historical Press, 1994). The book includes document abstracts showing the chain-of-title for many properties in the region. It does not cover east of the Bush River. You'd want to know where people lived before deciding if you wanted to order a map for east-of-Bush-River or the plats and documents for west-of-Bush-River. To find out, go to www.archivesindex.sc.gov. A search there will take you to printable copies of the colonial plats (through ~1775) and of the county wills (1782-~1852). Not every will was recorded and transcribed, but most of them were. ----- Original Message ----- From: "marsha moses" <[email protected]> To: "bush river mail list" <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, May 25, 2008 10:34 AM Subject: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Bush River/Dutch Fork One of the things that I found a couple of spare minutes to do while attending the Bush River Homecoming 2008 this past weekend was to look at a book in the Newberry Library.
