    1. Re: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Charles MILES b. about 1750 d. 1811

    3. In 1790, the Charles Miles on the Newberry Co SC census was listed in between people who were currently living on Cannon's Creek of the Broad River, around 4 miles east of Newberry Courthouse. This was more of a "Presbyterian neighborhood" than a "Quaker neighborhood" in 1790. Two other Charles Mileses of SC skipped the census in 1790. One of them lived on Turkey Creek in Chester Co. He was a Lt. under Col. Andrew Williamson from 1776, and filed a pension claim from Robertson Co TN in 1826 (therefore not the one who died in SC in 1811). The other was a J.P. in Union Co, had been a Major under Gen. Sumter. He purchased enormous amounts of land in Union Co. and points west during the post-war decades. You can find the locations of those with the SCDAH search engine at www.archivesindex.sc.gov. The county wills are online through that site too. Charles Miles "of Newberry Co." did not purchase land from the state. One of the three Isaac Miles households in SC in 1800 was in Union Co; he and his wife were both born 1774-84, had no children. He was "probably" the son of Maj. Charles Miles of Union Co. The younger Isaac Miles household in Newberry Co. in 1800 was exactly the same: he and wife born 1774-84, no children. The 1800 Newberry census was reported in semi-alphabetical order, rather than by neighborhood, so gives no information about where the various Miles households were located. The size of the Charles Miles household in Newberry in 1790 is one clue that he is the one you're seeking. Another possible clue is that Martin Hollenback/Hollenbeck/Hollenbaugh lived in Newberry Co from the 1780's, on King's Creek of the Enoree River in the northwestern part of the county. King's Creek was the site of another colonial Presbyterian congregation. There was nowhere else in SC for Isaac Miles to have located a wife with that surname in ~1800. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Furuiye Sally" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, November 18, 2008 4:58 PM Subject: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Charles MILES b. about 1750 d. 1811 Searching for information about Charles MILES born about 1750 and died in 1811. His wife died in 1816. He had 14 daughters and one son, Isaac who was born about 1779. Isaac married Rossannah Hollenbeck and they had at least one son named Martin b. 1800. They may have been Quakers at the Bush River MM. Family stories say they were born near Charleston, but I can't find any reference to them there. Charles MILES shows up at a head of family in the 1790 census in Newberry District. He has 3 males over the age of 16, 1 male under 16 and 10 females, so this makes me think he is the right one. Any help greatly appreciated
