This is in reply to a communication received from Betty J. Lewis dated April 26, 2008. She is interested in Quaker families known to have lived in Bush River: Charity Cook, Thomas Lewis, Hollingsworths, Henderson, Wright. They moved to the Miami Meeting area. I happen to be a descendant of Charity Cook, the Hollingsworths, Hendersons, and Wrights. I wrote a lengthy account of this ancestry which was published in the book compiled by Judith F. Russell and others, _The Historic Bush River Quaker Cemetery, Newberry, South Carolina_. My account appears on pages 115-116 of that work. It is too lengthy fo reprint here, and I do not believe it is to be found on the internet. There is a small book by Algie Newlin, _Charity Cook, A Liberated Quaker Woman_ (Richmond, IN: Friends United Press, c. 198l. It is a number of years since I had opportunity to read this book. I do not think in includes very much genealogical data. It can probably be found in large Quaker libraries. Charity Cook was a daughter of John Wright and Rachel Wells. Charity( Wright) Cook was a sister of Susannah Wright who married Isaac Hollingsworth. The Wrights who moved north from South Carolina tended to be descendants of John and Rachel (Wells) Wright. The Quakers who moved to southwestern Ohio from Bush River Monthly Meeting in South Carolina took their certificates to Miami Monthly Meeting after that Monthly Meeting was set off from Westland Monthly Meeting in southwestern Pennsylvania in 1803. It was not until four or five years later that other Monthly Meetings in various localities were set off from Miami Monthly Meeting. It is my impression that the Hollingsworths tended to settle in the area of West Branch Monthly Meeting in Miami County. The Cooks first settled in Clinton County and became members of Caesars Creek Monthly Meeting. However, within a few years, by 1809 or 1810, they were settling in Union County, Indiana south of Richmond and formed Silver Creek Meeting My Richard Henderson ancestors may never have lived in Ohio, but may have lived in North Carolina for a time and then moved directly from North Carolina to Union County, Indiana. By 1830, a number of families of Hollingsworth, Cooks, and Hendersons were moving on to the Vermilion Friends settlement on the Indiana/Illinois border. I am not acquainted with the ancestry of the Thomas Lewis family, but they could possibly be of Welsh Quaker ancestry, moving down from the Welsh tract area outside of Philadelphia to Virginia and the Carolinas. ------ Herbert Standing, Earlham, Iowa. **************Need a new ride? Herbert, would you please send as an attachment a copy of your published article mentioned below? I descend from John E. Henderson who died in Perry County, AL in 1879 (will dated Marion Perry Co Ala on this the seventh day of June 1872.) through his daughter Alice Satira Henderson (bNovember 17, 1856 and dMay 18, 1918) wife of Thomas M. Nichols (1854 AL d1930 AL). I would, of course, like to know if this specific John E. Henderson came from SC. My maternal line, Leverett, came into Perry County, AL by 1838. and intermarried with the Thomas M. Nichols. The Nichols family also came from SC. You may contact me off-list at [email protected] Thank you for considering my request.
